Our day began with an early breakfast at Tracce in Ginosa. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong Italian coffee filled the air, a perfect start to a day of adventure. I savored a simple yet delicious pastry, while Hans enjoyed a hearty frittata. Fortified and ready, we set off for the Parco Naturale Regionale Terra delle Gravine.
The Parco Naturale Regionale Terra delle Gravine is a sprawling natural park characterized by deep ravines, rocky cliffs, and lush Mediterranean vegetation. As we drove closer, the landscape transformed, the rolling hills giving way to dramatic gorges carved over centuries by the relentless flow of water. We parked the car and set out on one of the many hiking trails, eager to explore this unique environment. The air was crisp and clean, filled with the scent of wild herbs and pine.
The trails wound along the edges of the gravine, offering breathtaking views of the valleys below. The scale of the landscape was immense, making me feel small yet connected to the ancient forces that shaped it. Hans, ever the enthusiastic photographer, captured the stunning vistas, determined to preserve the memory of this natural wonder. We spotted several birds of prey soaring overhead, their silhouettes sharp against the clear blue sky.
As we hiked, we marveled at the diverse plant life, from fragrant rosemary and thyme to hardy olive trees clinging to the rocky slopes. The park is a haven for wildlife, and although we didn't encounter any of the more elusive creatures, we felt their presence in the rustling leaves and the distant calls of birds. The silence was broken only by the sound of our footsteps and the occasional gust of wind.
In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks.
After a few hours of hiking, we worked up quite an appetite. It was time for lunch at Restaurant Antiche Mura in Laterza. This charming restaurant is known for its traditional Pugliese cuisine, and we were eager to sample some local specialties. We started with a selection of antipasti, including creamy burrata, marinated olives, and crusty bread drizzled with olive oil. For our main courses, I opted for the orecchiette with cime di rapa, a classic Pugliese pasta dish, while Hans chose the grilled lamb, tender and flavorful. The meal was a celebration of simple, fresh ingredients, prepared with love and care. It was the perfect way to refuel after our morning adventure.
With our bellies full and our spirits high, we decided to indulge in some retail therapy. Our next stop was Made in Puglia, a shop in Matera that showcases the work of local artisans. I had read about this place and was excited to see the craftsmanship firsthand. As we stepped inside, we were greeted by a colorful array of ceramics, textiles, and other handmade goods. The shop was a treasure trove of unique souvenirs and gifts, each item telling a story of tradition and creativity.

I was immediately drawn to the intricate ceramics, hand-painted with vibrant designs inspired by the region's history and culture. Hans admired the beautifully woven textiles, crafted from locally sourced wool and cotton. We spent a happy hour browsing the shelves, chatting with the friendly staff, and learning about the artisans behind the creations. I eventually settled on a set of hand-painted bowls, while Hans chose a cozy woolen scarf. It felt good to support the local economy and take home a piece of Puglia's artistic heritage.
As the sun began to set, we made our way to Matera, a city famous for its sassi, ancient cave dwellings that have been inhabited for thousands of years. Our dinner reservation was at Bina Ristorante di Puglia, a restaurant known for its innovative take on traditional Pugliese cuisine. The restaurant was located in a beautifully restored building, with a cozy and inviting atmosphere. We were greeted warmly by the staff and seated at a table overlooking the city.

The menu at Bina Ristorante di Puglia was a culinary journey through the region, with each dish showcasing the freshest seasonal ingredients. We started with a selection of crudi di mare, raw seafood delicacies that were incredibly fresh and flavorful. For our main courses, I chose the baccalà mantecato, creamy cod served with polenta, while Hans opted for the beef braciole, tender rolls of beef stuffed with cheese and herbs. The meal was a symphony of flavors and textures, a testament to the chef's skill and creativity.
To complement our meal, we ordered a bottle of local Primitivo wine. Its rich, fruity notes were a perfect match for the hearty Pugliese cuisine. As we savored each sip, we reflected on the day's adventures, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience the beauty and flavors of this remarkable region.
After dinner, we took a leisurely stroll through the sassi, the ancient cave dwellings of Matera, now illuminated by soft, golden light. The city was magical, with its narrow streets and hidden alleyways creating a sense of mystery and wonder. We paused to admire the stunning views from the Belvedere, a panoramic viewpoint that offered a sweeping vista of the city and the surrounding landscape.
As we walked, I couldn't help but feel a sense of connection to the people who had lived in these caves for centuries. Their resilience and ingenuity were evident in every stone, every archway, every carefully crafted detail. It was a humbling experience, a reminder of the enduring power of the human spirit.
Tomorrow, we’re off to Selva di Fasano, a wooded area known for its natural beauty. We plan to explore its trails and enjoy the tranquility of the forest. We'll start the day with breakfast at Fè Ristorante, followed by lunch at Cucina Cefalicchio, and end the evening with dinner at Locanda Di Nunno. And perhaps, we'll find time to relax at Classico bar.
Back at our cozy accommodation, I write this blog post, my heart full of gratitude for the experiences of the day. Puglia continues to surprise and delight us at every turn. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
The warmth of the people, the beauty of the landscape, and the richness of the culture have all combined to create an unforgettable journey. As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but smile, knowing that we were exactly where we were meant to be, savoring every moment of this incredible adventure.
I feel so grateful to share these experiences with Hans, whose enthusiasm and curiosity match my own. Traveling together has only deepened our bond, creating memories that we will cherish for a lifetime. It reminds me of growing up in Anse Boileau, where the simple joys of life were always within reach. Here in Puglia, I find a similar sense of peace and contentment, a reminder that the most beautiful things in life are often the simplest.
