A Day of Earthy Delights

Today was all about connecting with the raw, untamed beauty of Puglia. Leaving the coastal charm behind for a day, Hans and I ventured inland to explore the heart of the region. It was a day filled with natural wonders, culinary discoveries, and artistic treasures, a reminder of the simple joys that travel brings.

Our morning began in Ruvo di Puglia, a town known for its pottery art. But first, breakfast! We enjoyed a delightful start to our day at Le Nicchie. The location was perfect, right in the heart of the old town. Sipping on Italian coffee and enjoying a pastry, I felt completely immersed in the local atmosphere.

With our appetites satisfied, we set out to find Puglia Ceramiche. I was eager to find a unique piece to bring back home, a tangible reminder of our time here. I have always been drawn to ceramics. Perhaps it's the way a simple piece of clay can be transformed into something beautiful and functional. I was hoping to find something special, a piece that spoke to the soul of Puglia. While I admired the craftsmanship, I didn't find anything that truly resonated with me. Maybe tomorrow I will find something in Matera!

Our main destination for the day was Alta Murgia National Park. As we drove, the landscape transformed from rolling hills to a vast, open plateau. The park is a protected area, known for its unique geological formations and diverse flora and fauna. It felt like stepping into another world. It was a welcome change from the crowded coastal towns we had been visiting.

We spent hours exploring the park, hiking along its rocky trails and marveling at the panoramic views. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of wild herbs and earth. The park is home to a variety of bird species, and we spotted several hawks soaring overhead. I couldn't help but feel a sense of peace and tranquility wash over me. It was a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Hans, with his keen eye for detail, was in his element, capturing the essence of the landscape through his camera lens. He loves landscape photography, which is quite different from my passion for portraits!

For lunch, we headed to Tibbasta Ristorante in Gravina in Puglia. The reviews were excellent, and we were eager to try some authentic Puglian cuisine. The restaurant did not disappoint. We started with a selection of local cheeses and cured meats, followed by a hearty pasta dish made with fresh, seasonal ingredients. The flavors were rich and complex, a testament to the region's culinary heritage. I tried the Calamarata, which had scorfano ragout, basil, and black garlic powder. Hans had the tagliata. The service was impeccable, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. It was the perfect place to refuel after our morning adventure. The waitress was super nice and helpful.

As the sun began to set, we made our way back to Ruvo di Puglia for dinner. Radici had caught my eye with its promise of traditional dishes with a modern twist. The restaurant's ambiance was cozy and inviting, with exposed stone walls and soft lighting. We decided to try the tasting menu, which featured a variety of local specialties. Each dish was a work of art, beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. The wine pairings were also excellent, showcasing the best of Puglia's viticulture. It was a truly memorable dining experience. I especially loved the fascinating interior and creative cooking.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much I appreciate the diversity of Puglia. From the rugged landscapes of Alta Murgia National Park to the charming towns and culinary delights, there is something for everyone here. Tomorrow, we will explore Matera. I am eager to see the ancient cave dwellings and learn more about the region's history. I've heard wonderful things about Al Batacchio, where we plan to have breakfast. I am also very curious about the Trullo Antichi Sapori, and the Grotta Palazzese, a restaurant built into a cave!

As I sit here writing, I can't help but feel grateful for this incredible journey. Traveling with Hans makes it even more special. His calm demeanor and adventurous spirit perfectly complement my own. Together, we make a great team, always ready to explore new places and embrace new experiences. I am also glad that I did not forget my camera, as I was able to capture the beauty of the park! I almost forgot it, as I was in such a rush this morning.
