Exploring the Charm of Puglia with My Love
Day 9: A Day Amongst the Oaks: Exploring Selva di Fasano
Discovering the serene beauty of Selva di Fasano, indulging in exquisite Puglian cuisine, and savoring the simple joys of Italian life.
Whispers of the Woods
Today was a day of embracing the tranquility of nature and the culinary delights that Puglia has to offer. Leaving behind the coastal breezes, Hans and I ventured inland, eager to discover the enchanting Selva di Fasano. I couldn't wait to immerse myself in the lush greenery and experience the serenity that this hidden gem promised. It felt like stepping into a different world, a world where the whispers of the wind through the trees told stories of centuries past.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Fè Ristorante. Though technically in Noci, it was well worth the short drive. The restaurant itself is nestled within a beautifully restored complex of trulli, offering an intimate and refined atmosphere. The elegant setting, with its crystal glasses and soft lighting, created a truly special ambiance. I savored every bite, thinking how different this was from my simple breakfasts back in Bonn. The chef, Francesco Laera, is known for his impeccable cuisine, combining simple yet refined elements with high-quality ingredients sourced locally. He’s even been called a ‘samurai in the kitchen’ ! The experience was a wonderful start to our day, setting a tone of culinary excellence that we would continue to enjoy.
With our appetites satisfied and spirits high, we set off to explore Selva di Fasano. As we drove, the landscape transformed, the rolling hills adorned with lush greenery. Selva di Fasano, meaning Forest of Fasano, truly lives up to its name. The air was crisp and clean, filled with the scent of pine and oak. It felt so refreshing, a welcome change from the city air I'm used to. It reminded me a little of the forests on Mahé, back in the Seychelles, though with a distinctly Mediterranean twist. I couldn't help but feel a sense of peace wash over me as we entered the heart of the forest.
We spent the morning wandering through the woods, hand-in-hand, enjoying the tranquility of nature. The area is known for its diverse flora and fauna, and I was eager to spot some local wildlife. While we didn't encounter any exotic creatures, we did see several birds flitting through the trees, their songs adding to the symphony of the forest. We followed one of the many hiking trails, the path winding through the trees, leading us deeper into the heart of Selva di Fasano.
The best view comes after the hardest climb.
The views from the higher points were simply breathtaking. From our vantage point, we could see the Adriatic coast stretching out before us, the sea shimmering in the distance. It was a truly magical sight, one that I will cherish forever. Selva di Fasano is also known as the Italian balcony on the Orient,” and I could certainly see why. Its elevated position offers panoramic views that are simply stunning. We even spotted the Minareto di Fasano, an exotic villa built in Moorish style, adding a touch of the unexpected to the landscape.
After our invigorating hike, it was time for lunch. We drove to Cucina Cefalicchio, drawn by its reputation for traditional Puglian cuisine with a creative touch. The restaurant is located in Canosa di Puglia and the drive took us through some stunning countryside. The restaurant had a cozy, inviting atmosphere, and we were warmly greeted by the staff. We decided to indulge in the set menu, eager to sample a variety of local specialties. The meal was a feast for the senses, each dish bursting with flavor and showcasing the freshest ingredients. From the homemade pasta to the succulent meat dishes, every bite was a delight. Hans particularly enjoyed the wine, which was locally produced and perfectly complemented the meal. The service was impeccable, making us feel like honored guests. It was the perfect spot to relax and refuel after our morning adventure.

In the late afternoon, we decided to experience the local culture with a visit to Classico, a popular bar in Fasano. It was a lively spot, filled with locals and tourists alike, all enjoying the vibrant atmosphere. We sipped on Aperol spritzes, watching the world go by, and soaking up the energy of the town. It was a fun, relaxed way to spend the afternoon, and it gave us a glimpse into the local way of life.

As evening approached, we made our way to Locanda Di Nunno for dinner. This restaurant had been recommended to us by several locals, and we were eager to try it out. The Locanda Di Nunno offered a warm and inviting ambiance, perfect for a relaxed dinner. The menu featured traditional Puglian dishes, and we decided to try a few local specialties. I opted for the orecchiette with cime di rapa, a classic Puglian pasta dish, while Hans chose the grilled lamb. Both dishes were delicious, the flavors authentic and satisfying. The service was attentive and friendly, making us feel right at home. It was the perfect way to end our day of exploring and indulging.

Reflecting on our day, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and charm of Puglia. Selva di Fasano was a true highlight, a tranquil escape into nature that nourished my soul. The culinary experiences were equally memorable, each meal a celebration of local flavors and traditions. As we drove back to our accommodation, I couldn't help but feel a sense of contentment. Puglia has a way of capturing your heart, of making you feel like you belong. I am already looking forward to tomorrow, when we plan to explore the Alta Murgia National Park. I’m looking forward to more natural beauty, and perhaps another culinary adventure or two. We'll start our day with breakfast at Le Nicchie, followed by lunch at Tibbasta Ristorante, and dinner at Radici. We also plan to visit Puglia Ceramiche, and perhaps pick up a souvenir to remind us of our time here. As Hans always says, “A souvenir is a memory you can hold.” Tonight, however, I will drift off to sleep with the sounds of the forest still ringing in my ears, dreaming of the adventures that await us in this magical region of Italy.
Puglia continues to surprise and delight, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. It’s moments like these, surrounded by beauty and good food, that make me realize how lucky I am to be able to experience this with Hans. Sometimes, I feel like I’m living a scene from a movie, maybe something like *Call Me By Your Name* , but instead of longing and heartache, it’s filled with laughter and shared joy. Good night from Puglia!
