Island Escape to La Digue: A Seychellois Homecoming
Day 7: Island Bliss: Discovering La Digue's Hidden Gems
Exploring the stunning beaches of Anse Lazio and the vibrant marine life around Cocos Island, La Digue offers a perfect island escape.
A Day of Sun, Sand, and Sea on La Digue
Today was nothing short of magical! I woke up with the sun streaming through our window, eager to explore more of La Digue's famed beauty. Hans and I set out early, ready for a day filled with pristine beaches and vibrant marine life. It was a perfect day to further deepen my connection with this beautiful island, and share its wonders with Hans.
Our first stop was the legendary Anse Lazio. After a leisurely bike ride, we arrived at what felt like paradise on earth. The beach was even more breathtaking in person than the pictures I'd seen online. The sand was powder-soft beneath my feet, and the turquoise water sparkled invitingly. I could feel the warmth of the sun kissing my skin as we strolled along the shore, hand in hand.

We found a perfect spot under the shade of a Takamaka tree and laid out our towels. Hans, ever the adventurer, was immediately drawn to the water. I, on the other hand, couldn't resist snapping a few photos of the stunning scenery. The granite boulders framing the beach added a dramatic touch, making it a photographer's dream. It reminded me so much of the beaches back home in Anse Boileau, a comforting sense of familiarity washing over me.
Soon enough, I joined Hans in the crystal-clear water. We swam and splashed around, enjoying the refreshing coolness against the warm Seychellois sun. The waves were gentle, perfect for a relaxing swim. I even tried my hand at snorkeling, though I must admit, I was a bit clumsy with the gear. Hans, ever the patient teacher, helped me adjust my mask and showed me how to breathe properly. With his guidance, I managed to spot a few colorful fish darting among the rocks.
After our swim, we decided to explore the beach further. We walked along the shoreline, discovering hidden coves and secluded spots. The beach wasn't too crowded, which allowed us to truly appreciate the tranquility of the surroundings. I felt a sense of peace and serenity wash over me, a feeling I hadn't experienced in a long time. It was exactly the kind of escape I needed.

As lunchtime approached, we decided to grab a bite at one of the beachside restaurants. We opted for Lobster Bay Restaurant, even though it meant a ferry ride back to Mahé. The reviews I had read raved about their seafood, and I was eager to try it for myself. The ferry ride was smooth and enjoyable, offering stunning views of the coastline. When we arrived at the restaurant, we were greeted by friendly staff and a lively atmosphere. We ordered the grilled lobster, of course, and it was absolutely divine. The meat was tender and succulent, bursting with flavor. It was the perfect way to refuel after our morning of swimming and sunbathing.

After lunch, we hopped on another ferry back to La Digue, our next adventure awaiting us: Cocos Island. The boat ride was exhilarating, the wind whipping through our hair as we sped across the water. As we approached Cocos Island, I was struck by its beauty. It was a tiny, uninhabited island surrounded by vibrant coral reefs. It looked like something straight out of a postcard.

We donned our snorkeling gear and plunged into the turquoise water. What awaited us beneath the surface was simply breathtaking. The coral reefs were teeming with life, a kaleidoscope of colors and shapes. Schools of fish darted around us, unafraid and curious. I spotted angelfish, parrotfish, and even a sea turtle gracefully gliding through the water. It was like swimming in an aquarium, a truly unforgettable experience.
Hans was in his element, exploring every nook and cranny of the reef. I, on the other hand, was content to float on the surface, marveling at the underwater spectacle. I felt a deep connection to the ocean, a sense of belonging that resonated with my Seychellois roots. It was a reminder of the simple joys in life, the beauty of nature, and the importance of preserving it for future generations.
As the sun began to dip below the horizon, we reluctantly made our way back to shore. The boat ride back to La Digue was filled with laughter and shared memories. We recounted our favorite moments of the day, reliving the magic of Anse Lazio and Cocos Island.
Back on La Digue, we decided to treat ourselves to a well-deserved cocktail at Robinson Crusoe Bar. I had read about it, and was excited to experience its laid-back atmosphere. The bar was nestled right on the beach, with tables and chairs scattered on the sand. We ordered a couple of tropical cocktails and settled in to watch the sunset. The sky was ablaze with color, a fiery spectacle that painted the sky in hues of orange, pink, and purple. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day.

I sipped my cocktail, feeling grateful for the opportunity to share this incredible experience with Hans. It was a day that had brought us closer together, a day filled with laughter, adventure, and unforgettable memories. As I looked out at the ocean, I couldn't help but feel a sense of pride in my Seychellois heritage. La Digue had welcomed me back with open arms, reminding me of the beauty and simplicity of island life.
We decided to have dinner at Julianas Villas Café. It was a small, unassuming place, but the food was incredible. We ordered a variety of Creole dishes, savoring the flavors and spices that reminded me of my childhood. It was a taste of home, a comforting and familiar experience that warmed my soul.

Before heading back to our accommodation, we made a quick stop at Marie Antoinette Restaurant on Mahé, drawn by its historical significance and reputation for authentic Creole cuisine. Though we only had time for a brief visit, the colonial-style building and the aroma of traditional dishes transported me back in time. I learned about its history, how it was established in 1972 by Mrs. Kathleen Fonseka, aiming to offer tourists a taste of true Seychellois cooking. I made a mental note to return for a proper meal another day, eager to delve deeper into the culinary heritage of Seychelles.

As I lay in bed tonight, I can't help but feel a sense of contentment. Today was a reminder of the simple pleasures in life, the beauty of nature, and the importance of cherishing every moment. La Digue had once again cast its spell on me, and I knew that I would carry these memories with me long after I left this island paradise.
Tomorrow, our last day, we plan to visit Simon’s Fruit Shop and Crystal Water Kayaks, hoping to soak in every last bit of La Digue's charm before we head back to Germany. I want to make the most of our final hours here, creating even more memories to cherish.
Good night from La Digue!
