Whispers of the Ocean

Today was a day of uncovering La Digue's hidden treasures, venturing off the beaten path to discover the island's more secluded and romantic spots. With Hans by my side, I embraced the spirit of adventure, eager to see what secrets this enchanting island held. It was a day filled with breathtaking views, delicious food, and moments of pure bliss that reminded me why I fell in love with the Seychelles in the first place.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast of fresh fruit and Creole coffee at our guesthouse. Energized and ready to explore, Hans and I set off towards the southern part of the island, our first destination being Rocher Roméo et Juliette. The morning air was filled with the sweet scent of tropical flowers, and the sun was already casting a warm glow over the landscape. I felt a sense of excitement bubbling inside me, a feeling I always get when I'm about to discover something new and beautiful.

As we cycled along the coastal road, the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean sparkled to our left, and the lush green foliage of the island's interior beckoned to our right. La Digue always feels like stepping back in time, a place where life moves at a slower, more deliberate pace. The absence of cars adds to the tranquility, and the friendly greetings from locals create a sense of community that is truly heartwarming.

Reaching Rocher Roméo et Juliette required a bit of a detour and a short hike, but the effort was well worth it. The dramatic rock formation rising from the sea was a sight to behold, its rugged beauty enhanced by the crashing waves and the endless horizon. The name itself evokes a sense of romance and timeless love, and I couldn't help but feel a little swept away by the atmosphere.

Sometimes, the most beautiful places are the ones that require a little extra effort to reach.

Hans, ever the supportive partner, helped me navigate the rocky terrain, and together we found the perfect spot to take in the view. I snapped a few photos, trying to capture the essence of this magical place, but no picture could truly do it justice. It was one of those moments where you just have to be present, soaking in the beauty and letting it fill your soul.

After spending some time at Rocher Roméo et Juliette, we continued our journey towards Anse Bonnet Carre. This secluded beach is known for its untouched beauty and tranquil atmosphere, and I was eager to experience it for myself. The path to Anse Bonnet Carre was a bit more challenging, involving some walking through bushes and climbing over rocks. I was glad I had worn my comfortable walking shoes!

As we arrived at Anse Bonnet Carre, I was immediately struck by its pristine beauty. The sand was soft and white, the water crystal clear, and the surrounding landscape lush and green. It felt like we had stumbled upon our own private paradise. We were the only ones there, and the silence was broken only by the gentle lapping of the waves.

We spent a couple of hours swimming in the refreshing water, sunbathing on the sand, and simply enjoying each other's company. It was the perfect way to unwind and reconnect with nature. I felt a sense of peace and contentment wash over me, a feeling that is so rare and precious in our busy modern lives.

By lunchtime, our stomachs were starting to rumble, so we decided to head back towards town in search of some delicious Creole food. We had heard great things about Sisters Takeaway, a local eatery known for its authentic Seychellois flavors. As we cycled back, we discussed how different La Digue is compared to Mahe, especially when thinking of the STC Duty Free shop at the Seychelles International Airport, which is always bustling with people looking for last-minute souvenirs and luxury goods. Here, life is simpler, more connected to nature, and focused on the essentials.

Arriving at Sisters Takeaway, we were greeted by the friendly staff and the enticing aroma of Creole spices. We ordered a variety of dishes to share, including grilled fish, octopus curry, and lentil stew. Each dish was bursting with flavor, a testament to the fresh local ingredients and the skillful cooking of the chefs. It was a truly authentic culinary experience, one that transported me back to my childhood and the flavors I grew up with.

After lunch, we decided to explore the shops in town, looking for souvenirs to take back to Bonn. While La Digue doesn't have the same kind of duty-free shopping as you find at the airport on Mahé, it does offer a variety of unique and locally made products. I was particularly interested in finding some spices and vanilla beans to bring home, as well as some handmade crafts that reflected the island's culture and artistry.

We spent some time browsing the shops, chatting with the local artisans, and learning about their craft. I was impressed by the quality and creativity of the products, and I ended up buying a few small items to remind me of our time on La Digue. It's always special to bring home something that has a story behind it, something that connects you to the place you visited and the people you met.

As the afternoon wore on, we started thinking about dinner. We had heard good things about both Bravo Restaurant and The Deck Restaurant, but we ultimately decided to try The Deck Restaurant, as it was closer to our guesthouse and offered stunning views of the ocean. We made a reservation for sunset, eager to enjoy a romantic dinner with a view.

Arriving at The Deck Restaurant, we were immediately captivated by its beautiful setting. The restaurant is located right on the beach, with tables set up on a wooden deck overlooking the turquoise waters. The atmosphere was relaxed and inviting, and the staff were friendly and attentive. We were seated at a table with a perfect view of the sunset, and I knew we were in for a special evening.

We ordered a bottle of wine and a variety of seafood dishes to share, including grilled prawns, lobster, and fish curry. Each dish was exquisitely prepared and bursting with flavor. The seafood was incredibly fresh, and the Creole spices added a unique and delicious twist. It was a truly memorable meal, one that we savored with every bite.

As the sun began to set, the sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant colors, painting the ocean with hues of orange, pink, and purple. It was a breathtaking sight, one that took my breath away. Hans and I sat in silence, holding hands, and simply taking in the beauty of the moment. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day.

After dinner, we took a leisurely stroll along the beach, hand in hand, listening to the gentle lapping of the waves. The stars were starting to appear in the sky, and the air was filled with the sweet scent of tropical flowers. I felt a sense of gratitude and contentment wash over me, a feeling that I will cherish forever.

As we walked, we talked about our plans for tomorrow. We're planning to visit Anse Georgette and Ile au Cerf, and perhaps enjoy a drink at Beach Shak Seychelles. I’m already looking forward to more adventures and discoveries.

Today was a day of pure bliss, a day of uncovering La Digue's hidden treasures and reconnecting with the beauty and tranquility of the Seychelles. It was a day that reminded me why I love this island so much, and why I feel so grateful to be able to share it with Hans. As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but smile, knowing that tomorrow would bring even more adventures and unforgettable moments.
