Reconnect with Roots: A Family Adventure in La Digue
Day 13: Island Flavors and Transparent Waters: A Day of La Digue Delights
Discover La Digue's charm with fresh fruit, kayak adventures, and exquisite Creole cuisine, all while soaking in the island's beauty.
A Taste of Island Life
Today was a vibrant tapestry of experiences, a blend of flavors, sights, and adventures that truly captured the essence of La Digue. From the simple pleasure of fresh fruit to the exhilaration of kayaking through crystal-clear waters, every moment felt like a celebration of this beautiful island. It's days like these that remind me why I longed to return to my roots, to share this paradise with Hans and to create memories that will last a lifetime.
Our day began, as many do here, with a relaxed and unhurried breakfast. We strolled over to Julianas Villas Café for a taste of local morning flavors. I opted for the traditional Creole breakfast – a spicy fish curry with freshly baked bread. Hans, ever the continental, chose a simple omelet. Sipping our coffee, we watched the island come to life, the sounds of scooters and bicycles filling the air, a gentle hum of activity that's so different from the bustling streets of Bonn.

Fueled and ready for adventure, our next stop was Simon’s Fruit Shop. This wasn't just a pit stop; it was an experience. Simon, with his warm smile and encyclopedic knowledge of all things fruity, greeted us like old friends. The shop was a riot of colors – mangoes, pineapples, bananas, and fruits I couldn't even name. I introduced Hans to the wonders of soursop, its creamy texture and slightly tangy flavor a delightful surprise to his palate. We grabbed a couple of fresh juices, the perfect antidote to the Seychellois sun, and continued our exploration.

The heat of the day was calling for some aquatic adventure. So, we made our way to Crystal Water Kayaks, nestled near Anse Source d'Argent. I had booked us on the Robinson Crusoe tour, an ecological kayaking adventure that promised a unique perspective of La Digue's coastline. As we pushed off in our transparent kayak, the underwater world unfolded beneath us. Vibrant coral reefs, schools of colorful fish, and the mesmerizing play of light and shadow created a surreal experience. Hans was particularly captivated, snapping photos at every turn. It was incredible to see the marine life so clearly, as if we were floating on glass.

The beauty of La Digue lies not just in its postcard-perfect scenery, but in the way it invites you to slow down, to savor each moment, and to connect with the simple joys of life.
Our guide shared fascinating insights about the local ecosystem, emphasizing the importance of conservation. It was heartening to see a business so committed to eco-friendly practices. We paddled along the coast, discovering hidden coves and secluded beaches, each more breathtaking than the last. The tour culminated with a visit to Anse Pierrot, a beach accessible only from the ocean. The sense of exclusivity was palpable as we stepped onto the pristine sand, surrounded by towering granite boulders. We took a moment to simply breathe, to soak in the tranquility, and to appreciate the raw beauty of nature.
After our kayaking adventure, we were famished. Lunch called for a casual, authentic experience, which is why Sisters Takeaway was the perfect choice. We opted for grilled fish, a Seychellois staple, marinated in local spices and cooked to perfection. The fish was flaky, flavorful, and utterly divine. We ate our lunch on a nearby bench, watching the world go by, the sounds of Creole chatter and the scent of grilling seafood filling the air. It was a simple meal, but it tasted like paradise.

As the sun began its descent, casting a golden glow over the island, we decided to indulge in a bit of beachside relaxation. We headed to Beach Shak Seychelles for a sundowner. Though technically located on Mahé, the idea of a beachside bar with reggae music and stunning sunset views was too enticing to pass up, so we imagined ourselves there in spirit!. I sipped on a refreshing cocktail, a blend of local rum and tropical fruits, while Hans opted for a Seybrew, the local beer. The atmosphere was laid-back and convivial, the perfect setting to unwind after a day of exploration.

For our final culinary experience of the day, we decided to treat ourselves to a special dinner at L'Escale Resort Marina & Spa. This was a splurge, but one we felt was well-deserved. The restaurant exuded elegance and sophistication, with stunning views of the marina. I chose a seafood platter, a celebration of the ocean's bounty, while Hans opted for a perfectly cooked steak. The food was exquisite, the service impeccable, and the ambiance simply magical.

As we savored our meal, we reflected on the day's adventures. La Digue had woven its spell on us, captivating us with its beauty, its charm, and its authentic island spirit. It was a day of simple pleasures, of unexpected discoveries, and of creating memories that we would cherish forever.
Tomorrow marks the end of our stay on La Digue, as we prepare to catch the Inter Island Ferry back to Mahé. We plan to spend some time at Eden Island, Seychelles before our final night. Before we leave La Digue, we'll grab breakfast at Spice & Bake Take Away. I'm already looking forward to the flavors that await us. And, perhaps, a bit of shopping at Quiksilver!
La Digue, you've been a dream. Until next time...
