Discover the magic of Curieuse Island and Praslin's Cote D'Or, filled with giant tortoises, beach bliss, and Creole flavors.
Seychellois Serenity
Today was a vibrant tapestry of island exploration, a dance between the wild allure of Curieuse and the sun-kissed shores of Cote D'Or. It was a day filled with gentle giants, turquoise waters, and the comforting flavors of Creole cuisine. Days like these remind me why I longed to return to my roots, to share the magic of the Seychelles with Hans, and to create memories that will forever bind us to this paradise.
Explore Curieuse Island's natural beauty with unique wildlife, pristine beaches, and rich history in the heart of Seychelles.
Our day began with the tantalizing aroma of Creole spices wafting from BiBi Take Away & Cafe. For breakfast, I savored a traditional fish curry, while Hans opted for a classic omelet. It was the perfect way to fuel up for our adventure to Curieuse Island. The air was already thick with humidity, promising another scorcher of a day, but the excitement of seeing the giant tortoises kept our spirits high.
The boat ride to Curieuse was a scenic prelude to the wonders that awaited us. The turquoise water sparkled under the morning sun, and the gentle breeze carried the scent of salt and distant rain. As we approached the island, the sight of the bare red earth, interspersed with the iconic Coco de Mer palms, was striking. Curieuse, once a leper colony, now serves as a sanctuary for these gentle giants. It felt like stepping back in time.
Upon arrival, we were greeted by the sight of Aldabra giant tortoises roaming freely. These magnificent creatures, some over a hundred years old, lumbered around with a serene dignity. Hans was immediately captivated, his eyes wide with childlike wonder. I felt a surge of pride, knowing I was introducing him to a piece of my heritage. We spent hours observing them, marveling at their size and the intricate patterns on their shells. I even managed to coax one into a gentle neck scratch, feeling the rough texture of its skin beneath my fingers. It was a humbling experience, connecting with these ancient beings in their natural habitat.
In the embrace of the Seychelles, time slows down, and the simple joys of life – the warmth of the sun, the taste of Creole spices, and the company of loved ones – become the most cherished treasures.
Curieuse Island holds a history as intriguing as its present-day inhabitants. Originally named Ile Rouge for its striking red soil, it later served as a leper colony from 1829 to 1965. The remnants of this past add a layer of solemnity to the island's beauty. As we walked along the trails, we passed the old doctor's residence, now a museum, a silent witness to the island's layered history.
After our tortoise encounter, we embarked on a mangrove walk, a boardwalk winding through a dense forest of mangrove trees. The air was thick with the earthy scent of the wetlands, and the silence was broken only by the rustling of leaves and the occasional bird call. It was a refreshing contrast to the open beach, a chance to immerse ourselves in the island's diverse ecosystems.
By midday, our stomachs were rumbling, so we hopped back on the boat and headed to Praslin, specifically Cote D'Or Beach. This expansive beach, with its powdery white sand and shallow, turquoise waters, is perfect for swimming and snorkeling. We chose Lo Brizan Seychelles Restaurant and Gallery for lunch, drawn in by its promise of Creole cuisine and local art. The restaurant did not disappoint. We started with a Classic Caesar Salad, followed by the Seafood Mixed Grill. The fish was so fresh, it practically melted in our mouths. Hans particularly enjoyed the prawns, declaring them the best he'd ever tasted. I savored the flavors of my homeland, the blend of spices and fresh ingredients a comforting reminder of my childhood.

The art gallery was an added bonus. The walls were adorned with vibrant paintings and sculptures by local artists, each piece telling a story of the Seychelles. I was particularly drawn to a painting of Anse Source D'Argent, its granite boulders and turquoise waters captured in stunning detail. It was a poignant reminder of the beauty that surrounds us.
After lunch, we spent the afternoon basking in the sun on Cote D'Or Beach. The water was so clear and calm, perfect for a leisurely swim. Hans tried his hand at windsurfing, while I simply relaxed on the sand, soaking up the warmth and watching the clouds drift by. It was pure bliss, a moment of perfect serenity.
As the sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink, we made our way to Fruita Cabana Bar for a sundowner. This beach bar, nestled on the edge of Anse Source D'Argent, is renowned for its cocktails and breathtaking views. I ordered a Seychellois Mojito, while Hans opted for a local Takamaka Rum punch. We sipped our drinks, watching the sun disappear into the ocean, feeling grateful for this day of island exploration.

For dinner, we decided on Bravo Restaurant, enticed by its reputation for fresh seafood and lively atmosphere. Located on Eden Island, the restaurant offered stunning views of the marina. We started with sushi rolls, followed by fresh grilled fish. The food was exceptional, and the service was impeccable. Our waiter, Gary, was particularly attentive, making us feel like honored guests. He even surprised us with a slice of Takamaka chocolate rum cake for dessert, a decadent treat that perfectly capped off our day.

Before heading back to our guesthouse, we stopped by a local bar for a nightcap. The Fruita Cabana Bar was alive with music and laughter, locals and tourists mingling together in a joyful celebration of island life. We sipped on Takamaka Rum cocktails, letting the music wash over us, feeling a sense of belonging and connection.
Tomorrow, we plan to visit Ile Moyenne and Saint-Anne Marine National Park. I am eager to explore the underwater world and discover more of the Seychelles' natural treasures. But for now, I am content to savor the memories of today, the gentle giants, the turquoise waters, and the comforting flavors of Creole cuisine. These are the moments that make a journey worthwhile, the moments that remind me why I longed to return to my roots.
As I reflect on the day, I am struck by the simple beauty of the Seychelles. It is a place where time slows down, where the natural world takes center stage, and where the warmth of the people shines through. It is a place that nourishes the soul and reminds us of what truly matters in life: connection, beauty, and the simple joys of existence.
Back at our guesthouse, I couldn't help but feel a pang of nostalgia for Anse Boileau, the coastal town where I spent my childhood. I remember the days of playing on the beach, swimming in the crystal-clear waters, and savoring the flavors of my grandmother's cooking. These memories are etched in my heart, a constant reminder of the beauty and simplicity of my island home.
As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this opportunity to reconnect with my roots and share the magic of the Seychelles with Hans. It is a journey of discovery, a celebration of heritage, and a testament to the enduring power of love and connection. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings, what new adventures and memories await us in this island paradise.
I am already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures, which include a visit to Ile Moyenne and the Saint-Anne Marine National Park. I am particularly excited about the prospect of snorkeling and discovering the vibrant marine life that thrives in these protected waters. And, of course, I am also looking forward to trying out some new local delicacies, perhaps at La Dolce Vita for breakfast and Anchor Cafe & Restaurant for lunch. And maybe visit the Gift Hub and find some souvenirs.
The day was a whirlwind of experiences, each one adding another layer to our Seychellois adventure. From the gentle giants of Curieuse to the sun-kissed shores of Cote D'Or, every moment was a treasure. And as I close my eyes tonight, I am filled with a sense of peace and contentment, knowing that I am exactly where I am meant to be, reconnecting with my roots and sharing the magic of the Seychelles with the one I love.
