Day 6: Island Hopping and Underwater Wonders: A Day of Discovery in Seychelles
Discover Seychelles' beauty with a boat trip to Ile Moyenne and St. Anne Marine Park, snorkeling, and Creole cuisine on La Digue.
A Day of Marine Magic
Today was an absolute dream, a true Seychellois adventure that combined history, nature, and the vibrant underwater world. I was eager to show Hans the beauty of the islands surrounding La Digue, and today's itinerary promised just that. It was a day filled with boat rides, snorkeling, and the kind of island charm that makes Seychelles so unique.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at La Dolce Vita. The aroma of Italian coffee and fresh pastries filled the air, a comforting start to our island adventure. I opted for a simple yet satisfying croissant and café au lait, while Hans, ever the adventurous one, chose a hearty frittata. The ambiance was warm and inviting, setting a perfect tone for the day ahead. It's funny, isn't it? Finding a little slice of Italy in the heart of Seychelles! It reminded me of our life back in Bonn, but with a distinct island twist.

With our appetites sated, we made our way to the harbor, ready to embark on our journey to Ile Moyenne and the Saint-Anne Marine National Park. The boat was already waiting, bobbing gently in the turquoise water, eager to whisk us away to a day of exploration.

As we set off, the sun kissed our skin, and the gentle sea breeze tousled my hair. The view of La Digue slowly receding into the distance was simply breathtaking. The water was so clear that I could see the coral reefs beneath the surface, teeming with marine life. I couldn't wait to dive in and explore!
Our first stop was Ile Moyenne, a small island with a big history. As we approached, I could see the lush greenery and the rocky coastline. The island is a national park, and it felt like stepping into a hidden paradise. We disembarked and were greeted by our guide, who shared fascinating stories about the island's past. I learned that it was once owned by Brendon Grimshaw, an Englishman who transformed it into a nature reserve. It's incredible how one person's vision can create such a haven for wildlife.
We strolled along the island's trails, surrounded by towering trees and the sounds of exotic birds. And then, we saw them – the giant tortoises! They roamed freely, munching on leaves and basking in the sun. It was such a surreal experience to be so close to these gentle giants. I felt a sense of connection to my homeland, a reminder of the natural beauty that I often miss while living in Germany. Hans was particularly captivated, snapping photos and marveling at their size and grace.
The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever.
After our visit to Ile Moyenne, we hopped back on the boat and set course for the Saint-Anne Marine National Park. The anticipation was palpable as we neared the park, known for its vibrant coral reefs and diverse marine life. I couldn't wait to plunge into the crystal-clear waters and witness the underwater spectacle.

We anchored at a prime snorkeling spot, and I eagerly donned my gear. As soon as I slipped beneath the surface, I was transported to another world. Schools of colorful fish darted around me, the coral reefs were a kaleidoscope of shapes and hues, and the sunlight danced through the water, creating an ethereal glow. It was a sensory overload in the best possible way. I spotted parrotfish, angelfish, and even a sea turtle gliding gracefully through the water. Hans joined me, and we explored the reef together, pointing out different species and sharing our awe at the underwater beauty. It was a moment of pure joy, a shared experience that strengthened our bond and deepened our appreciation for the natural world.
After our snorkeling adventure, we were famished! The boat crew had prepared a delicious Creole lunch for us, complete with grilled fish, rice, and a variety of local fruits. We feasted on the deck, surrounded by the stunning views of the marine park. The flavors of the Creole cuisine were a delightful reminder of my childhood, the spices and aromas evoking memories of family gatherings and festive celebrations. Hans, always eager to try new things, savored every bite, declaring it one of the best meals he'd had on the trip.
With our bellies full and our hearts content, we made our way back to La Digue. The sun was beginning to set, casting a golden glow over the island. The sky was ablaze with color, a breathtaking spectacle that marked the end of a perfect day. As we approached the harbor, I felt a sense of gratitude for the experiences we had shared, the memories we had created, and the beauty we had witnessed.
Before heading back to our guesthouse, we decided to stop by Gift Hub. I wanted to find a little something to remind us of our day of island hopping and underwater wonders. I picked out a small, hand-painted wooden turtle, a perfect memento of our snorkeling adventure. Hans found a beautiful seashell, its intricate patterns a testament to the artistry of nature.

For dinner, we chose Maison Marengo, a restaurant known for its authentic Creole cuisine and charming ambiance. The restaurant was nestled amidst lush gardens, creating a romantic and tranquil setting. We started with grilled octopus, a local delicacy, followed by fish curry served with chutney mash and lentil mash. The flavors were exquisite, a perfect blend of spices and fresh ingredients. The atmosphere was relaxed and inviting, making it a perfect end to our day of exploration. As we savored our meal, we were treated to live music, adding to the magical ambiance of the evening.
