A Day of Tranquility in Monemvasia

Monemvasia continues to enchant me with its timeless beauty and serene atmosphere. Today was a journey of quiet contemplation and breathtaking vistas, a perfect blend that allowed me to soak in the essence of this medieval marvel. It's days like these that remind me why I started this blog – to share the magic of discovering hidden corners of the world, one peaceful moment at a time.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Voltes. The warm and inviting atmosphere was the perfect start to a chilly February morning. We sat inside, enjoying the cute decor and the promise of traditional Greek flavors with a modern twist. Hans opted for the traditional Fava, a creamy split pea purée, while I chose a selection of local cheeses and olives. The service was impeccable, and the food was delicious, setting a positive tone for the adventures that lay ahead.

With our bellies full and our spirits high, we set out to explore the Panagia Chrysafitissa Church. As we walked through the narrow, winding streets of Monemvasia, I couldn't help but feel transported back in time. The architecture here is simply stunning, with stone houses and cobblestone paths that whisper tales of centuries past.

Nestled at the edge of Kato Poli, the Church of Panagia Chrysafitissa stands as a beacon of peace and history. This small, all-white church, dating back to the 17th century, is dedicated to the patron saint of the city. Legend has it that the church was built after a miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary was discovered in a well nearby. The water from this well is considered holy, believed to cure various ailments and even help barren women conceive.

The church itself is modest in size, but its historical significance and picturesque location make it a must-visit. The architecture is simple yet elegant, with a domed roof and a serene courtyard. As I stepped inside, I was immediately struck by the sense of tranquility that permeated the space. The soft glow of the candles, the gentle murmur of prayers, and the faint scent of incense created an atmosphere of reverence and peace.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quietest of places.

After spending some time in quiet contemplation at the Panagia Chrysafitissa Church, Hans and I decided to seek out the framed panoramic point. The walk there was an adventure in itself, as we navigated the labyrinthine streets of Monemvasia. Every corner turned revealed a new and captivating view – a charming doorway, a bougainvillea-draped balcony, or a glimpse of the azure Aegean Sea.

Finally, we reached the framed panoramic point, and I must say, the view was nothing short of spectacular. From this vantage point, the entire town of Monemvasia unfolded before us, a tapestry of red-tiled roofs, stone walls, and winding alleyways. The sea stretched out to the horizon, shimmering under the winter sun, and the sky was a brilliant blue, dotted with fluffy white clouds.

I couldn't resist taking out my camera to capture the moment, trying to encapsulate the beauty and serenity of this place. It's moments like these that make me realize how lucky I am to be able to travel and experience the wonders of the world. I thought of my family back in the Seychelles, missing the familiar warmth of the islands, but also feeling grateful for the opportunity to explore new landscapes and cultures.

As the afternoon wore on, our thoughts turned to lunch. We decided to try Peinakothēkē, a restaurant known for its traditional Greek cuisine. We shared a selection of meze, including dolmades (stuffed grape leaves), keftedes (meatballs), and tzatziki (yogurt dip). Every dish was bursting with flavor, a testament to the freshness of the ingredients and the skill of the chef.

In the evening, we planned to indulge in dinner at Emvasis Cafe - Cocktail Bar, drawn by its reputation and the promise of a relaxing atmosphere. We savored the local flavors while enjoying the ambiance. Later, we ventured to Byron's Wine Tasting Bar. The owner, Byron, was incredibly charming and knowledgeable, guiding us through a tasting of local wines paired with delicious tapas. The bar itself was steeped in history, dating back to the 10th century, and the atmosphere was both cozy and sophisticated.

As I sipped the rich, full-bodied wine, I reflected on the day's adventures. From the quiet serenity of the Panagia Chrysafitissa Church to the breathtaking views from the framed panoramic point, Monemvasia had once again captured my heart. It's a place where history comes alive, where beauty abounds, and where peace can be found in every corner.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Holy Church of Hagia Sophia and the Acropolis of Monemvasia. I am excited to delve deeper into the history of this remarkable town and discover even more of its hidden treasures. We might also stop by Monemvasia Deli - Edodimopolio to sample some local delicacies. Until then, I'll cherish the memories of this day, a perfect blend of tranquility and scenic splendor.

Back at the Malvasia Traditional Hotel, I felt a sense of contentment wash over me. Hans and I sat on our small balcony, overlooking the dimly lit streets of Monemvasia. The air was crisp and cool, carrying the faint scent of woodsmoke and sea salt. As I looked up at the starlit sky, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this moment, this place, this life.

Monemvasia has a way of slowing down time, of stripping away the stresses and distractions of modern life, and of reminding you of what truly matters. It's a place where you can reconnect with yourself, with your loved ones, and with the beauty of the world around you. And for that, I will always be grateful.

While Monemvasia is enchanting in its own right, I couldn't help but think of the vibrant Carnival celebrations happening elsewhere in the municipality. Perhaps next time, we'll time our visit to coincide with these festivities, adding another layer of cultural immersion to our experience.

Goodnight from Monemvasia. I look forward to sharing more of our adventure with you tomorrow!
