A Journey Begins
After months of anticipation, Hans and I finally set foot in Monemvasia, a place that feels like stepping directly into the pages of a history book. The air is thick with the whispers of centuries past, and the stone walls seem to hold countless untold stories. Today, we began our adventure, eager to uncover the secrets of this medieval gem. It's a delightful change of pace from our cozy life in Bonn, and I'm excited to share every moment with you.

Our journey started with a hearty breakfast at Chrisovoulo Cafe Restaurant Bar. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the promise of traditional Greek delicacies filled the air. I opted for a classic Greek yogurt with honey and walnuts, while Hans, ever the adventurous one, chose a local savory pie. The warmth of the cafe and the friendly smiles of the staff made us feel instantly at home. Chrisovoulo is known for using local Monemvasian and Greek traditions to meet contemporary palates.

Fueled and ready, we ventured into the heart of Monemvasia. Our first stop was the Monemvasia Archaeological Collection. Housed in a 16th-century Ottoman mosque, the museum offered a fascinating glimpse into the town's rich history. Pottery, relics, and architectural fragments told stories of Byzantine rulers, Venetian merchants, and Ottoman conquerors. I was particularly captivated by the intricate coats of arms, a trend introduced during the Frankish occupation. Hans, with his keen eye for detail, was fascinated by the marble door frame from the Church of Agia Sofia.

Stepping out of the museum, we found ourselves in Monemvasia Central Square. The square, a bustling hub of activity, was surrounded by charming shops and cafes. We took a moment to soak in the atmosphere, watching locals and tourists alike mingle and chat. The architecture was simply stunning, a blend of Venetian and Byzantine styles that spoke volumes about the town's diverse past. I couldn’t resist snapping a few photos, trying to capture the essence of this unique place.

Lunchtime found us at Matoula Restaurant, a local favorite known for its traditional Greek cuisine. We were lucky enough to snag a table with a view of the sea. The menu was filled with tempting options, but we finally settled on rooster with noodles, pork krasato with orange, and oven-baked soutzoukaki. Each dish was a burst of flavor, a testament to the freshness of the local ingredients. The staff was incredibly friendly, making us feel like part of the Matoula family. I made a mental note to try and recreate the pork krasato when we returned to Bonn – a little taste of Monemvasia in our German kitchen.

Monemvasia is a place where every stone has a story to tell, and every corner holds a new discovery.

After lunch, we decided to indulge in a little retail therapy at Pietra Boutique Monemvasia. The shop was a treasure trove of local crafts, clothing, and souvenirs. I found a beautiful hand-painted silk scarf, a perfect reminder of our trip. Hans, surprisingly, picked out a leather-bound journal, perhaps inspired to document his own Monemvasia adventures. The shop owner was incredibly kind, sharing stories about the local artisans and the history behind each item. I always appreciate supporting local businesses when we travel; it feels like a more authentic way to experience a place.

As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the town, we made our way to Kanoni for dinner. This restaurant, perched high in the castle walls, offered breathtaking views of the sea and the surrounding landscape. We started with fried local goat cheese and sausage made from an old-time recipe with orange and smoked with sage. For our main courses, Hans chose the Kleftiko lamb, while I opted for the shrimp spaghetti. The food was exquisite, the service impeccable, and the atmosphere magical. As we savored each bite, we watched the sky transform into a canvas of vibrant colors. It was the perfect end to a perfect day.

Reflecting on our first day, I am struck by the unique charm of Monemvasia. It's a place where history comes alive, where the past and present intertwine seamlessly. I feel incredibly fortunate to be here with Hans, sharing this experience with my best friend and partner in adventure. Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Panagia Chrysafitissa Church and the Framed panoramic point. I can't wait to see what other wonders await us in this enchanting medieval town.

Before drifting off to sleep, I did have a pang of regret that I'd forgotten to pack our adapter for the Greek power outlets, and a rain poncho might have been useful too, given the changeable February weather. But these are minor details in what has otherwise been a flawless start to our Monemvasia escape. I wouldn't trade this experience for anything. Goodnight from Monemvasia!
