Exploring the Blue Pearl of Morocco: A Journey to Chefchaouen
Day 1: A Blue Awakening: First Impressions of Chefchaouen
Embark on a vibrant journey through Chefchaouen's blue-washed medina, savoring local flavors and cultural treasures with Marie and Jean-Pierre.
Lost in the Azure Embrace
After months of anticipation, Jean-Pierre and I finally arrived in Chefchaouen, the famed Blue Pearl of Morocco. Leaving Montreal behind, with its familiar sights and sounds, we were eager to immerse ourselves in a new culture, a new palette of experiences. As a freelance translator and travel blogger, I’ve always been drawn to places that tell a story, and Chefchaouen, with its labyrinthine blue streets, promised a tale unlike any other. I was particularly excited to share this experience with Jean-Pierre, whose support means the world to me. This first day was all about wandering without a plan, letting the city’s unique charm wash over us.
Our journey began with a scenic drive from Tangier. The landscape unfolded before us, a tapestry of rolling hills and rustic villages, hinting at the beauty that awaited. October painted the hills in warm, earthy tones, a beautiful contrast to the azure city we were approaching. The weather was pleasantly warm, with a gentle breeze that carried the scent of wildflowers. I had forgotten my sun hat, a small oversight that I would remedy tomorrow, but thankfully remembered to pack my travel journal and camera, ready to capture every moment.
The moment we entered Chefchaouen Medina, I was captivated. The city is swathed in shades of blue, from the softest pastel to the deepest indigo. It felt like stepping into a dream, a world where the sky and the earth had merged into one harmonious hue. I was immediately drawn to the Chefchaouen Medina, the old city, a UNESCO-listed site that promised a sensory feast.

Chefchaouen is more than just a visual delight; it's a place where the soul feels at peace, where every corner holds a story waiting to be discovered.
A Morning Stroll and Culinary Delights
Our first stop was Café Sindibad for breakfast. Nestled with a great view overlooking Place Outa el Hammam, the café offered a panoramic vista of the city. We savored traditional Moroccan pastries and bread, accompanied by flavorful dips and spreads, and of course, aromatic mint tea. The experience was a delightful immersion into local flavors, a perfect start to our culinary journey. I made a mental note to try my hand at recreating some of these dishes back in Montreal, a little piece of Morocco to bring home with us.

After breakfast, we dove headfirst into the Medina. The narrow, winding streets were a maze of blue, each turn revealing a new perspective, a new photo opportunity. The soft morning light filtered through the alleyways, casting ethereal shadows that danced on the walls. It was a photographer’s dream, and I was in my element, snapping away while Jean-Pierre explored the artisan shops.
The air was filled with the sounds of daily life – the chatter of locals, the rhythmic hammering of craftsmen, and the melodic calls of vendors. We passed shops selling everything from handwoven carpets to intricate metalwork, each piece a testament to the rich artistic heritage of the region. I was particularly drawn to the blue pottery, a signature of Chefchaouen, and I knew I’d be back to purchase a few pieces as souvenirs.
Exploring the Historical Kasbah
Our exploration led us to the Kasbah, a historic fortress that stands as a silent witness to Chefchaouen’s past. Built in the 15th century, the Kasbah once served as a stronghold against invaders, its sturdy walls protecting the city’s inhabitants. Today, it houses an ethnographic museum, a lush garden, fountains, and towers offering panoramic views of the city.

We climbed to the top of one of the towers, and the view was simply breathtaking. From above, the blue of the Medina stretched out before us, a sea of cobalt and sapphire. The Rif Mountains loomed in the distance, their peaks softened by the afternoon haze. It was a moment of pure serenity, a chance to appreciate the beauty of this unique place.
Inside the Kasbah, we explored the ethnographic museum, which offered a glimpse into the region’s cultural heritage. The exhibits showcased traditional clothing, musical instruments, and artifacts, each telling a story of the people who have called Chefchaouen home for centuries. I was particularly fascinated by the displays of Berber jewelry, intricate pieces that reflected the artistry and skill of local craftsmen.
A Taste of Local Flavors
Lunchtime found us at Restaurant Bab Ssour, a local gem recommended by several locals. The restaurant exuded a cozy, authentic vibe, its walls adorned with traditional Moroccan décor. We indulged in a tagine, a slow-cooked stew that is a staple of Moroccan cuisine. The tagine was a symphony of flavors, with tender meat, fragrant spices, and sweet vegetables all melding together in perfect harmony. We also sampled Moroccan soup Harira and Maroccan Salad. It was a culinary experience that tantalized our taste buds and left us craving more.

As the afternoon waned, we ventured into Hibart Souvenirs Shop, a treasure trove of local crafts and mementos. I was on the hunt for a special something to remind me of our time in Chefchaouen. The shop was a kaleidoscope of colors and textures, filled with handmade goods that reflected the artistic spirit of the region. After much deliberation, I settled on a handwoven scarf, its intricate patterns a testament to the skill of local artisans.

Before dinner, we took a leisurely stroll through Place Outa el Hammam, the heart of Chefchaouen. The square was bustling with activity, locals and tourists mingling together in a vibrant tapestry of cultures. We sat at a café, sipping mint tea and watching the world go by, soaking in the atmosphere of this magical place.
For dinner, we chose Restaurant Ali Baba. While the reviews I had read were mixed, we decided to give it a try, drawn in by its inviting ambiance. The restaurant offered a variety of Moroccan dishes, including vegetarian options, which was a plus for me. We enjoyed a hearty meal of couscous and grilled vegetables, savoring the flavors of Morocco under the starlit sky. The staff was friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere was lively and festive, making for a memorable dining experience.

As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves back in the Medina, wandering through the quiet, blue-lit streets. The city had transformed under the cloak of night, its magic amplified by the soft glow of lanterns. It was a scene straight out of a fairy tale, and I felt grateful to be a part of it.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore Blue Medina Tours and Ras El Ma. I am looking forward to discovering more hidden gems in this enchanting city. We are also planning to have breakfast at Assaada, lunch at Chez Hicham and dinner at Mandala. And perhaps a relaxing drink at Cafe Clock.
Our first day in Chefchaouen was a whirlwind of sights, sounds, and flavors, a sensory feast that left us enchanted and eager to explore more. As I write this in my travel journal, curled up in our cozy hotel room at Hotel Barcelona, I can’t help but smile.
