Exploring the Untamed Beauty of Masoala National Park
Day 2: Lemurs and Lagoons: Discovering Masoala's Wonders
An immersive day exploring Masoala National Park's red ruffed lemur sanctuary and the serene lagon de Masoala, a true Malagasy paradise.
A Day of Discovery in Masoala
Today was a dream come true, a day filled with the vibrant life of Madagascar's rainforest and the tranquil beauty of its lagoons. Waking up to the sounds of the forest is something I'll never get used to, a symphony of chirps, rustles, and the occasional lemur call. I couldn't wait to see what adventures awaited us as we delved deeper into Masoala National Park.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Masoala Forest Lodge. I always appreciate how they incorporate local ingredients into their meals. Fuelled up, we set off to explore the Red Ruffed Lemur Sanctuary. This was an experience I had been eagerly anticipating, and it did not disappoint.

As we ventured into the sanctuary, the air was thick with humidity, a reminder of the rainforest's embrace. The kids were wide-eyed, their little hands gripping binoculars, ready to spot the elusive lemurs. It wasn't long before our guide, pointed upwards. There they were! Red ruffed lemurs, with their striking rust-red fur and jet-black faces, leaping effortlessly through the canopy. It’s incredible to witness these critically endangered creatures in their natural habitat. I couldn’t help but feel a surge of hope seeing these beautiful primates thriving in a protected environment. I tried to capture the moment with my camera, hoping to share their beauty with all of you.
The rainforest teemed with life, a vibrant tapestry woven with the sounds and sights of nature's wonders.
The sanctuary was alive with other creatures too. We spotted Madagascar day geckos and a host of chameleons, each adding to the park's rich biodiversity. Jean-Pierre, ever the keen observer, was fascinated by the leaf-tailed geckos, marveling at their camouflage. The kids were thrilled to find a tomato frog, its bright color a stark contrast to the green foliage. It was a reminder of the incredible diversity packed into this corner of the world.
After a morning of hiking and wildlife spotting, we were ready for lunch. We headed to Zandina, a local spot known for its authentic Malagasy cuisine. I opted for a traditional dish of Romazava, a flavorful beef stew with greens, while Jean-Pierre enjoyed some fresh seafood. The kids, surprisingly adventurous, tried a bit of everything! It’s these moments, sharing a meal and experiencing local flavors, that truly immerse us in the culture of Madagascar.

With our bellies full, we set off to explore the lagon de Masoala. The lagoon was a serene oasis, its calm waters reflecting the surrounding rainforest. The air was filled with the gentle sounds of lapping water and distant bird calls. We opted for a pirogue trip, gliding silently through the lagoon, allowing us to soak in the tranquility.

The lagon de Masoala is part of what is also known as the Blue Lagoon. The kids were fascinated by the colorful fish darting beneath the surface, and Jean-Pierre, ever the adventurer, even took a dip, marveling at the clarity of the water. I simply enjoyed the peacefulness of the lagoon, letting the gentle rocking of the boat lull me into a state of relaxation. It was a perfect afternoon, a moment of serenity amidst our adventurous journey.
As the sun began to dip below the horizon, we made our way to Tiko Bar Restaurant Shop for a refreshing drink. The bar was buzzing with locals and fellow travelers, all eager to share stories and experiences. I sipped on a local cocktail, a concoction of rum and tropical fruits, while the kids enjoyed some juice. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, a true reflection of Malagasy hospitality.

As I sit here, writing this blog post, I can still hear the sounds of the forest in my mind. Today was a day of incredible discoveries, a day that deepened my connection to my homeland. Seeing the red ruffed lemurs thriving in their sanctuary filled me with hope, and the tranquility of the lagon de Masoala soothed my soul. It was a reminder of the importance of conservation and the beauty of sustainable tourism. I'm grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with my family and with you, my readers.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore Ambodilaitry and the Alamaitso Marine Reserve. I am eager to see what wonders await us as we continue our journey through Masoala National Park. I am also looking forward to visiting the Digue Market.
Before I sign off, I wanted to share a thought that has been on my mind today. As travelers, we have a responsibility to protect the places we visit. By choosing sustainable tourism options, supporting local businesses, and respecting the environment, we can help ensure that these beautiful places remain for generations to come. And on a personal note, I realize I forgot my travel journal, which I should have added to the list of essentials. I will need to find one tomorrow at the Digue Market. Good thing I packed an extra pen!
Until tomorrow, cherish every moment and travel responsibly.
