A Dream Come True

As I sit here, reflecting on our first day in Masoala National Park, a sense of profound gratitude washes over me. This journey back to my homeland, Madagascar, with Jean-Pierre and the family, feels like more than just a vacation; it's a homecoming, a reconnection with the roots that have shaped who I am. The air is thick with humidity and the scent of a thousand unseen blossoms, a stark contrast to the crisp, clean air of Montreal. But here, in this vibrant, teeming rainforest, I feel utterly, completely alive.

Our day began early, with a hearty breakfast at Masoala Forest Lodge. The lodge itself is a marvel, nestled discreetly within the forest, barely visible from the ocean. After a breakfast of fresh fruit and strong Malagasy coffee, we set off for Nosy Mangabe, a small island reserve just a short boat ride from Maroantsetra.

The boat trip itself was an adventure, the turquoise waters of Antongil Bay sparkling under the morning sun. I couldn't help but feel a surge of pride, sharing this natural beauty with my family.

Nosy Mangabe is steeped in history, with tales of trading and piracy echoing through its dense forests. As we hiked, our guide pointed out rock carvings left by Dutch sailors in the 16th century, a tangible link to the island's past. The island is a sanctuary for the aye-aye, a unique and elusive lemur species that was introduced here in the 1960s to protect them from extinction. While we didn't spot one of these nocturnal creatures, knowing they were there, safe and protected, was comforting.

The biodiversity of Nosy Mangabe is simply astounding. The island is home to several species of lemurs, including the eastern woolly lemur, white-fronted lemur, black-and-white ruffed lemur, and gray mouse-lemur. We were fortunate enough to see a group of black-and-white ruffed lemurs, their distinctive calls echoing through the trees. Jean-Pierre, ever the photographer, was in his element, snapping photos of these beautiful creatures as they swung effortlessly through the branches. The island is also a haven for reptiles and amphibians, including the leaf-tailed gecko, masters of camouflage.

The rainforest is a symphony of life, a constant reminder of the intricate web that connects us all.

For lunch, we headed to Albert et Lily in Maroantsetra.

This charming restaurant specializes in Swiss cuisine with a Malagasy twist. It might seem odd to find Swiss food in Madagascar, but the fondue, made with local cheese, was absolutely delicious. It was a delightful culinary experience, blending the familiar with the exotic. It was a great opportunity to introduce my family to some of the local flavors, even with a Swiss touch.

After lunch, we explored the town of Maroantsetra, a bustling hub of activity. I wanted to find some authentic Malagasy crafts to bring back to Montreal, so we stopped by a shop called Masoala National Park.

I picked up a few hand-woven baskets and a beautifully carved wooden sculpture, each piece a testament to the skill and artistry of the local artisans. We also visited a local shop to buy some essentials. It was a great opportunity to support the local economy and bring home some unique souvenirs.

As the day drew to a close, we enjoyed dinner at L'ORION RESTAURANT.

The restaurant had a warm and inviting atmosphere, and the food was excellent. I tried a traditional Malagasy dish, Romazava, a flavorful stew of beef, greens, and ginger, while Jean-Pierre opted for a seafood dish, freshly caught from the bay. The perfect end to a perfect day.

Before heading back to the lodge, we took a stroll along the beach, the stars beginning to pepper the night sky. The air was filled with the sounds of the rainforest, a chorus of crickets, frogs, and unseen creatures. I thought about my childhood in Miarinarivo, growing up surrounded by the natural beauty of Madagascar. It felt good to be back, to share this with my family, and to rediscover the magic of my homeland.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Red Ruffed Lemur Sanctuary and explore the Lagon de Masoala. I can't wait to see more of this incredible park and to continue sharing our adventures with you all. I'm also looking forward to visiting Tiko Bar Restaurant Shop.

As I drift off to sleep, the sounds of the rainforest lulling me into a peaceful slumber, I know that this journey will be one for the books. It's a chance to reconnect with my roots, to share my love of Madagascar with my family, and to create memories that will last a lifetime. And I'm so glad you're all here to share it with us.

I'm so proud to be Malagasy.
