Finding Peace in Kyoto's Embrace

Today was a day of exploration and reflection, immersing myself in the serene beauty and rich cultural tapestry of Kyoto. From tranquil paths to majestic temples and delightful culinary experiences, every moment was a testament to the city's timeless charm. As I continue my solo adventure, I find myself increasingly drawn to the subtle nuances and hidden gems that Kyoto has to offer.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at MUGHAL Indian Restaurant & Bar. It might seem odd to start my day in Japan with Indian food, but I was curious to try this restaurant that I read about. The restaurant was tucked away near the Kamo River. I opted for a simple yet satisfying meal of naan and aloo gobi. It was a pleasant surprise to find such authentic Indian flavors here in Kyoto, a testament to the city's diverse culinary scene. The warm and welcoming atmosphere of the restaurant provided a perfect start to my day.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set out to explore the Philosopher's Path. The path, a serene stone walkway following a canal, is known for being lined with cherry trees. Though the cherry blossoms are not yet in full bloom, the subtle hints of spring in the air and the quiet murmur of the water created an atmosphere of profound peace. As I strolled along the path, I imagined the philosophers of the past who sought inspiration in this very place. The path was mostly quiet, with only a few other early risers enjoying the solitude.

The beauty of Kyoto lies not only in its grand temples and gardens but also in its quiet corners and hidden pathways, where one can find solace and inspiration.

The Philosopher's Path led me to Nanzen-ji, a Zen Buddhist temple with a rich history. The temple complex is vast, and I spent hours wandering through its various halls and gardens. The Sanmon Gate, a towering structure, offered panoramic views of the city and the surrounding hills. I was particularly drawn to the Hojo garden, a masterpiece of Zen landscape design. The carefully arranged rocks and meticulously raked gravel evoked a sense of tranquility and contemplation. I took my time here, sitting on the wooden veranda and simply absorbing the serene atmosphere. It was easy to see why this temple is considered one of the most important Zen temples in Japan. I also explored Nanzen Oku-no-in, finding a secret waterfall grotto hidden in the hills behind the temple. It was a bit of a climb, but discovering a small grotto with mysterious Buddhist images made it worth it.

For lunch, I ventured to Khaos Spice Diner, a quirky eatery known for its unique curry creations. The diner had a laid-back vibe, with film posters adorning the walls and reggae music playing in the background. I decided to try their signature dish, a combination of three different curries served on one plate. The flavors were bold and inventive, a fusion of Indian spices and Japanese dashi. It was a delightful culinary adventure, a perfect complement to the day's exploration. It's always a pleasure to find unexpected gems like this, places that offer not only great food but also a memorable atmosphere.

In the afternoon, I made my way to Heian Shrine, a striking Shinto shrine built to commemorate the 1100th anniversary of Kyoto's founding. The shrine is known for its massive torii gate and its vibrant vermilion architecture. As I walked through the spacious courtyard, I was struck by the grandeur and elegance of the shrine. I paid the admission fee to enter the Heian Shrine Garden and was immediately transported to a different world. The garden was designed by Jihei Ogawa VII, a renowned landscape designer, and it is divided into four distinct sections, each with its own unique charm. I spent hours wandering through the garden's winding paths, admiring the ponds, bridges, and meticulously manicured plants. The garden is particularly famous for its weeping cherry trees, though they are not yet in full bloom. I could only imagine how beautiful it must be when the trees are covered in delicate pink blossoms.

Before dinner, I did some souvenir shopping at Souvenir Kyoto. I wanted to find something special to bring back home, a tangible reminder of my time in this enchanting city. I finally settled on a beautiful handcrafted tea set, a perfect memento of my cultural exploration.

As the day drew to a close, I found myself at Yasakadori Enraku for dinner. This restaurant, recommended by a local, specializes in Oden, a traditional Japanese hotpot dish. The restaurant had a cozy and intimate atmosphere, with private rooms and soft lighting. I ordered a selection of Oden, each item carefully simmered in a light yet flavorful broth. The meal was a comforting and satisfying end to a day filled with exploration and discovery. I was also intrigued to find that this restaurant offers Maiko dinner experiences, where guests can interact with Maiko while enjoying their meal.

Today's journey through Kyoto was more than just a sightseeing tour; it was an immersion into the soul of the city. The Philosopher's Path offered a moment of quiet reflection, Nanzen-ji provided a glimpse into Zen Buddhism, and Heian Shrine showcased the grandeur of Shinto architecture. Each meal was a culinary adventure, a chance to savor the diverse flavors of Kyoto. As I reflect on the day, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience this remarkable city. I am already looking forward to tomorrow's itinerary, which includes the Kyoto International Manga Museum, the Kyoto Railway Museum, and the Kyoto Botanical Gardens. Before heading back to the Hotel Gracery Kyoto Sanjo, I'm looking forward to a relaxing evening, perhaps planning a return visit to Heian Shrine later in the week to witness the cherry blossoms in full bloom.

I'm also thinking about Jean-Pierre, and how much he would have enjoyed today's exploration. I know he would have been fascinated by the Zen gardens at Nanzen-ji, and I can already picture him taking photos of the vibrant architecture at Heian Shrine. I miss him dearly, but I also cherish the opportunity to embark on this solo adventure, to discover new things about myself and the world around me. Perhaps next time, we can explore Kyoto together, hand in hand, sharing the magic of this enchanting city.

As I prepare for another day of exploration, I am reminded of the importance of embracing the present moment, of finding beauty in the everyday, and of cherishing the connections that enrich our lives. Kyoto has already left an indelible mark on my soul, and I am eager to see what tomorrow will bring.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Kyoto International Manga Museum, the Kyoto Railway Museum, and the Kyoto Botanical Gardens. I'm also considering visiting UNDERBAR-KYOTO for a nightcap. I'm excited to delve into different facets of Kyoto's culture and history, and I'm sure it will be another day filled with unforgettable experiences. I'm grateful for this journey, and I look forward to sharing more of my adventures with you.

The Nagashibina festival at Shimogamo Shrine also takes place tomorrow, March 3rd. I may have to add that to my itinerary!

I also read that Toei Kyoto Studio Park is celebrating the Spring Festival until March 2nd. Perhaps I should have squeezed in a visit today!
