Whispers of the Earth

Today was a day of delving into the ancient heart of Namibia, a journey through geological marvels and sparkling treasures. Leaving behind the coastal landscapes, we ventured inland, eager to witness the famed Organ Pipes and explore the glittering depths of the Kristall Galerie. It felt like stepping back in time, each rock and crystal whispering tales of millennia past.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Essenzeit in Swakopmund [i]. The 'Essenzeit Start' – eggs, bacon, grilled tomatoes, and toast – was exactly the fuel I needed for the day's adventures. It's amazing how a good, solid breakfast can set the tone for exploration. Fuelled up, we hit the road, heading towards the geological wonder that is the Organ Pipes [i].

The drive itself was a lesson in Namibian geography. The landscape transformed from the sandy outskirts of Swakopmund to rugged, rocky terrain. As we approached the Organ Pipes, the anticipation grew. I've always been fascinated by geology, and the idea of witnessing such a unique formation was incredibly exciting. My friends were equally thrilled, cameras at the ready, eager to capture the moment.

Reaching the site, the Organ Pipes were truly a sight to behold. These striking dolerite columns, resembling giant organ pipes, stood proudly in a small gorge. The rich rusty colors, rising up to 5 meters high, were incredibly striking. Formed approximately 150 million years ago as a result of liquid lava intrusion into slate rock, exposed over time by erosion, they were a testament to the power and patience of nature. We spent a good hour wandering around, taking photos from every angle, and simply marveling at this geological masterpiece. The way the sunlight played on the columns, creating shadows and highlights, was mesmerizing. I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and respect for the Earth's incredible artistry.

To witness the Organ Pipes is to witness the Earth's patient artistry, a symphony of stone played out over millennia.

After the Organ Pipes, we made our way back to Swakopmund, but not before a quick lunch. We stopped at Rojo Pub and Restaurant at The Walvis Bay Yacht Club [i]. The Yacht Club was bustling with activity, a lively atmosphere filled with the chatter of sailors and the clinking of glasses. I opted for the deconstructed sushi bowl, a delightful mix of sushi rice, salmon, prawns and other ingredients. It was a refreshing and satisfying meal, perfect for a warm day by the sea.

With our bellies full and spirits high, we headed to our next destination: the Kristall Galerie in Swakopmund [i, 6]. This museum and gemstone shop houses the world's largest known quartz crystal cluster. As someone interested in history, I was intrigued. The Kristall Galerie is located in a modern building at the corner of Tobias Hainyeko St and Theo-Ben Gurirab Ave in Swakopmund-Central.

Stepping inside the Kristall Galerie was like entering a different world. The sheer scale of the quartz crystal cluster was astounding. Discovered in the Erongo region of Namibia in 1985, this natural wonder stands 3 meters high and 3 meters wide, weighing a whopping 14,100 kg. It took five years to carefully excavate it, a testament to the dedication and skill of those involved. The delicate work to excavate it took a full five years.

We wandered through the Galerie, admiring the various specimens, crystals, and cut gemstones on display. The adjacent shop was equally captivating, filled with jewelry and souvenirs. I couldn't resist purchasing a small piece of tourmaline, a beautiful reminder of our visit. I also enjoyed the rock cave and watching artists at work adding value to the semi-precious stones.

As the day drew to a close, we began our drive towards Windhoek, where we would be spending the night. The setting sun cast long shadows across the landscape, painting the desert in hues of orange and gold. It was a perfect end to a day filled with wonder and discovery.

For dinner, we decided to try Am Weinberg Restaurant in Windhoek [i, 9]. This restaurant is known as one of Windhoek's finest gourmet restaurants. The restaurant offers a health-oriented menu in an elegant atmosphere. It was the perfect place to reflect on the day's adventures. The Am Weinberg Restaurant is located in the upmarket suburb of Klein Windhoek. The restaurant setting was elegant and relaxing. I savored every bite, appreciating the flavors and the company of my friends.

Reflecting on the day, I felt an immense sense of gratitude. Namibia continues to surprise and amaze me with its diverse landscapes and hidden treasures. From the ancient Organ Pipes to the sparkling crystals of the Kristall Galerie, today was a reminder of the Earth's incredible beauty and the importance of preserving these natural wonders. And as I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but feel excited about what tomorrow would bring, with a visit to the Brandberg White Lady Painting planned [i]. I am also looking forward to a breakfast at Col'Cacchio The Grove, lunch at The Stellenbosch Tasting Room, and dinner at Jetty 1905 Restaurant [i]. We might also visit Atlas hookah lounge & restaurant [i].

Before I close for today, I wanted to share some thoughts about sustainable travel. As we explore these incredible places, it's important to be mindful of our impact on the environment. Choosing eco-friendly accommodations, supporting local businesses, and minimizing waste are just a few ways we can travel more responsibly. As travellers, we have a responsibility to protect the places we visit, ensuring that future generations can also experience their beauty and wonder. It's a small effort that can make a big difference.

Good night, everyone. I look forward to sharing more of our Namibian adventure with you tomorrow.

Tomorrow, we will explore the Brandberg White Lady Painting, a site that promises to be as captivating and enriching as the experiences of today. I am looking forward to it!

On a side note, I realized I forgot to pack a sandproof phone case and extra warm clothing. I will need to buy them tomorrow.
