Sand Sea Symphony

Today was a day of stark contrasts and stunning beauty. The Skeleton Coast continues to surprise and challenge me, pushing me to appreciate the raw, untamed essence of Namibia. From the vast emptiness of the desert to the crashing waves of the Atlantic, every moment was a sensory overload in the best possible way.

Our day began with an early breakfast at the Helmeringhausen Hotel & Restaurant. I must admit, after several days of more rustic meals, the hearty breakfast buffet was a welcome treat. The hotel itself has a charming, old-world feel, and I could easily see why it’s a popular stopover for travelers making their way between the Fish River Canyon and Sossusvlei. Fuelled up and ready for the day, we set off towards Sandwich Harbour, eager to witness the spectacle of towering dunes meeting the ocean.

The drive itself was an experience. The landscape shifted from rocky plains to endless stretches of sand, and the sense of isolation was palpable. It's a stark reminder of the power and indifference of nature, something I find both humbling and exhilarating. I was glad I had remembered to pack my camera, as I knew I would want to capture the striking scenery. I did, however, curse myself for forgetting my sandproof phone case, as I was constantly worried about getting sand in my phone.

Reaching Sandwich Harbour felt like stepping onto another planet. The sheer scale of the dunes is overwhelming, and the way they plunge directly into the Atlantic is a sight to behold. We spent hours exploring the area, marveling at the ever-changing landscape sculpted by the wind and tides. The contrast between the golden dunes and the deep blue sea was mesmerizing, and the sound of the waves crashing against the sand created a soothing, almost meditative atmosphere.

The desert and the ocean, in their stark contrast, create a symphony of nature's power and beauty.

We even spotted some wildlife, including flamingos wading in the shallows and seals basking on the sandbanks. It’s incredible how life manages to thrive in such an extreme environment. I found myself reflecting on the resilience of nature and the delicate balance of ecosystems.

For lunch, we stopped at Old Continental Café & Take-Away. It was a great place to grab a quick bite, and I enjoyed the local flavors. It’s these small, unassuming places that often provide the most authentic culinary experiences. It reminded me of some of the small cafes back in Škofja Loka, where you can always find a hearty meal and friendly conversation.

As the sun began to set, we made our way back towards Swakopmund. The light transformed the landscape, casting long shadows across the dunes and painting the sky in hues of orange and pink. It was a perfect end to a perfect day, and I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to witness such incredible beauty.

For dinner, we decided to try Sardinia Blue Olive Restaurant. The restaurant offered a warm and inviting atmosphere, and the menu featured a tempting array of dishes. While I am not in Sardinia, I appreciate a restaurant that has a Mediterranean flare. I opted for the seafood pasta, and Ana chose the grilled fish. Both were delicious, and we savored every bite while reminiscing about the day’s adventures.

After dinner, and feeling quite energetic, a few of us decided to check out Club Salt. I don’t usually go to nightclubs, but I was curious to see what the nightlife was like in Swakopmund. The club was lively and packed with people, and the music was a mix of local and international hits. I even managed to dance a little, which is saying something for a software engineer from Zurich! It was a fun way to let loose and experience a different side of Namibian culture. I made sure to keep an eye on my belongings, though, as I had read some reports about petty theft in the area.

As I sit here writing this, I can't help but feel a sense of accomplishment. Today was a testament to the power of exploration and the beauty of the unexpected. I am grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with my friends, and I look forward to what tomorrow brings. Tomorrow, we are planning to visit the Organ Pipes and Kristall Galerie. It will be interesting to see the geological formations and the crystal collection.

I am also reminded that I need to buy a gift for Luka. Perhaps I will find something at the Kristall Galerie. He would love a crystal, I am sure. I am also mindful that I need to start thinking about what I will bring back to Ana from this trip. Perhaps some local crafts or jewelry. She appreciates unique and authentic souvenirs.

Before I turn in for the night, I'm already anticipating tomorrow’s adventure. It's these moments of discovery and connection that make travel so rewarding. And as I drift off to sleep, I can still hear the sound of the waves and feel the sand between my toes. What a day!

I must admit, I am also looking forward to getting back to Zurich and seeing Ana and Luka. I miss them dearly, and I know they miss me too. But I also know that this trip has been good for me, allowing me to reconnect with myself and experience the world in a new way. I hope that I can bring some of that newfound perspective back home with me.

The Skeleton Coast continues to challenge and inspire me. It is a place of stark beauty and raw power, and I am grateful for the opportunity to experience it. And as I look ahead to the final days of our trip, I know that there are still many more adventures to come.

I am also mindful of the Trip Essentials that I had forgotten. The sandproof phone case would have been very useful today, and I will definitely make sure to pack it on future trips. And the extra warm clothing would have been appreciated during the cooler evenings. It’s always the little things that can make a big difference when you’re traveling in remote areas.

As I reflect on the trip so far, I am struck by the contrast between the Skeleton Coast and my life back in Zurich. In Zurich, everything is orderly and predictable. Here, everything is wild and unpredictable. In Zurich, I am surrounded by technology and innovation. Here, I am surrounded by nature and tradition. In Zurich, I am focused on my career and my family. Here, I am focused on the present moment and the beauty of the world around me.

And yet, despite these differences, I find that both places have something to offer. Zurich provides me with stability and security, while the Skeleton Coast provides me with adventure and inspiration. Zurich allows me to connect with my community and my culture, while the Skeleton Coast allows me to connect with myself and with nature. Zurich is my home, but the Skeleton Coast is a place that I will always carry with me in my heart.

As I close this entry, I raise a glass to the Skeleton Coast, to the friends who have shared this journey with me, and to the adventures that still lie ahead. May we continue to explore, to discover, and to connect with the world around us. And may we always remember the lessons that we have learned along the way. Cheers!
