Island Hopping and Art Gazing

Today was a day of serene beauty and artistic discovery as we ventured to Teshima Island and explored more of Naoshima's unique art scene. It's amazing how these islands manage to blend art, nature, and culture so seamlessly. The kids were excited, Ana was ready with her camera, and I was eager to soak in the inspiration.

Our morning began with a short ferry ride to Teshima Island. The journey itself was peaceful, with the gentle sea breeze and the stunning views of the Seto Inland Sea. It's a quick trip, maybe half an hour, but it feels like you're entering a different world.

Teshima Art Museum: A Sensory Experience

As we disembarked, we headed straight for the Teshima Art Museum. Designed by architect Ryue Nishizawa and artist Rei Naito, the museum is an experience unlike any other. The walk to the museum was part of the experience, a winding path through lush greenery with the sounds of nature all around.
The museum itself is a minimalist concrete structure with two large openings that frame the sky and surrounding forest. Inside, the "Matrix" installation by Rei Naito invites you to contemplate the beauty of water droplets as they emerge, merge, and disappear across the floor. It's a sensory experience that connects you with nature and makes you appreciate the simple things in life.
Luka was fascinated by the water droplets, trying to follow their paths and wondering where they came from. Ana, ever the architect, was captivated by the seamless integration of the building with its natural surroundings. As for me, I found myself lost in contemplation, reflecting on the delicate balance of life and art. It was a truly meditative experience.
Afterward, we stopped by the museum's cafe, which was in a building that mirrored the museum's design, to enjoy some local rice and tea. The rice, grown in the neighboring paddy fields, tasted incredibly fresh. It was a perfect way to end our visit to Teshima, feeling refreshed and inspired.
Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.

Chinu - the Black Sea Bream of Uno: Art from Marine Debris

Back on Naoshima, we decided to explore a bit beyond the main art sites and headed towards the port of Uno to see Chinu - the Black Sea Bream of Uno. This unique art installation features sculptures made entirely from marine debris. It’s a powerful statement about environmental conservation and the impact of waste on marine life.
The sculptures, depicting sea bream, are made from recycled materials sourced from the local sea. The intricate details and vibrant colors make them visually stunning, and it’s hard to believe they’re made from trash. Luka was particularly impressed by the clever use of umbrellas and other discarded items.
It was a good reminder of the importance of sustainable living, something Ana and I try to incorporate into our lives back in Zurich. We talked to Luka about reducing waste and protecting our oceans, hoping to instill in him a sense of responsibility towards the environment. Art House Project: Kadoya - A Blend of Tradition and Modernity

In the afternoon, we visited the Art House Project in the Honmura district, specifically Kadoya. This project transforms abandoned houses into art installations, blending traditional architecture with contemporary art. Kadoya was the first house to be completed as part of the Art House Project, about 200 years ago. It was restored to its original appearance with a stucco finish, smoked cedar boards, and traditional roof tiles.
Kadoya features works like "Sea of Time '98" by Tatsuo Miyajima, which uses LED displays set in pools of water. The juxtaposition of the old house with the modern technology was fascinating. It felt like stepping into a different dimension, where time and space were fluid and ever-changing.
Luka enjoyed spotting the different numbers on the LED displays, while Ana appreciated the way the artist had incorporated the house's history into the artwork. I was struck by the sense of calm and contemplation the space evoked. Explore the harmonious blend of traditional Japanese architecture and contemporary art at Naoshima's Art House Project: Kadoya.

Culinary Delights: Akaito Coffee, Maimai, and Yayoda

Throughout the day, we made sure to sample some of the local cuisine. For breakfast, we stopped at Akaito Coffee, a charming cafe known for its artisanal coffee and cozy atmosphere. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the sight of bookshelves filled with used books and magazines made it a perfect start to the day.
I opted for their Akaito Blend, while Ana enjoyed a latte. Luka, of course, chose a hot chocolate. The coffee was smooth and flavorful, and the cafe's tranquil ambiance was a welcome respite. The name Akaito, meaning "red thread" in Japanese, reflects the cafe's hope that people will find connection there. It was a lovely spot to relax and soak in the artistic spirit of Naoshima. For lunch, we headed to Maimai, a popular spot known for its gourmet hamburgers. I had heard about their Naoshima Burger, which features fresh Hamachi (young yellowtail) with a special tartar sauce. It did not disappoint ! The burger was juicy and flavorful, and the combination of fish and tartar sauce was a delightful surprise. Ana chose a classic cheeseburger, while Luka devoured a kids' meal. The cafe itself was adorned with artistic touches, reflecting Naoshima's vibrant culture. As the sun began to set, we made our way to Yayoda for dinner, a seafood restaurant that embodies Japanese culinary artistry. The restaurant focuses on fresh, locally sourced seafood, and the ambiance reflects traditional Japanese aesthetics. We started with sashimi made with freshly caught fish, followed by grilled seafood skewers. Each dish was prepared with precision and care, highlighting the rich flavors of the sea.
I paired my meal with a selection of sake, while Ana enjoyed some local plum wine. Luka, surprisingly, loved the grilled fish and even tried a bit of sashimi. The restaurant's limited hours and cozy setting made it feel like a special and intimate experience. Shopping at Mikazukishoten

Before heading back to My Lodge Naoshima, we stopped by Mikazukishoten, a coffee stand known for its exceptional coffee and handmade souvenirs. I picked up a bag of their original blend coffee beans, while Ana found a beautiful hand-painted scarf. Luka chose a small wooden toy. It was a perfect way to support local artisans and bring a piece of Naoshima back home with us.
As we walked back, I reflected on the day's experiences. Teshima's serene art museum, Naoshima's unique art houses, and the delicious local cuisine had all contributed to a day of artistic immersion. It's days like these that remind me why I love to travel and explore new cultures. Tomorrow, we plan to explore Tsunosaki, Kasaneiwa, and Miyanoura Gallery 6. I'm also hoping to relax with a drink at Kon'nichiwa bar. I can't wait to see what other hidden gems Naoshima has in store for us.
I am also excited about the new Naoshima New Museum of Art that is scheduled to open soon. Designed by Tadao Ando, it will be his tenth architectural work among the art facilities of Benesse Art Site Naoshima.
Also, Naoshima is one of the islands that will participate in the Setouchi Triennale 2025. It will be held across the islands of Japan's Seto Inland Sea. It’s a one-of-a-kind art festival where the landscape, the people, and the artworks come together in harmony.
