Day 8: Coastal Wonders and Artistic Finds: A Day of Exploration on Naoshima
Discover the scenic beauty of Tsunosaki, the intriguing Kasaneiwa rocks, and the artistic charm of Miyanoura Gallery 6 on Naoshima Island.
Island Escapes and Artistic Havens
Today was a day of venturing beyond the main art hubs of Naoshima, and I must say, it was incredibly refreshing. Leaving the well-trodden paths behind, we uncovered serene coastal spots and unique artistic expressions that offered a different perspective on this captivating island. It’s amazing how much Naoshima has to offer beyond its famous museums, and I’m excited to share our discoveries.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at APRON CAFE in Honmura. Ana and I shared a vegetarian plate, while Luka opted for the classic Japanese breakfast set. I always appreciate a good coffee, and APRON CAFE certainly delivered. The cafe's commitment to local ingredients really shines through in their dishes. It's a cozy spot, perfect for fueling up before a day of exploration.
With our stomachs full and spirits high, we set off to Tsunosaki, a scenic spot on the northern coast of the island. The drive there was beautiful, with glimpses of the Seto Inland Sea between the trees. When we arrived, I was immediately struck by the tranquility of the place. The coastline is rugged and beautiful, with clear blue waters and lush greenery. It was the perfect spot for a leisurely stroll, and Luka had a blast collecting seashells along the shore. Ana, ever the architect, was captivated by the way the natural landscape blended seamlessly with the artistic interventions scattered around the island.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
Next on our itinerary was Kasaneiwa, a set of precariously balanced rocks that have a mysterious, almost spiritual quality. Reaching Kasaneiwa required a bit of a hike, climbing up a long stairway and a narrow mountain road, but the effort was well worth it. The view from the top was breathtaking, offering a panoramic vista of the Seto Inland Sea. The rocks themselves are quite impressive, seemingly defying gravity. Luka was fascinated by them, asking how they managed to stay balanced like that. I found myself pondering the same question. Ana was busy capturing the scene with her camera, determined to get the perfect shot of the rocks against the backdrop of the sea.

After our coastal adventures, we headed to Miyanoura Gallery 6. Housed in a renovated pachinko parlor, the gallery is a unique space that showcases contemporary art installations. The current exhibition, Setouchi Archive, was particularly interesting, documenting various aspects of the region's history and culture. It was fascinating to see how the artist used the space to create a dialogue between the past and the present. Luka, surprisingly, was quite engaged, especially with the interactive elements of the exhibition. He even asked some thoughtful questions about the history of the pachinko parlor, showing a curiosity that warmed my heart.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Kon'nichiwa for a pre-dinner drink. This charming café, with its cozy interior and friendly atmosphere, was the perfect place to unwind after a busy day. I opted for a local craft beer, while Ana enjoyed a cup of matcha tea. Luka, of course, went for a juice box. The café was buzzing with locals and tourists alike, all enjoying the laid-back vibe and the beautiful view of the harbor.

For dinner, we had reservations at Restaurant EN, located in the Naoshima Ryokan Roka. This elegant restaurant offers a unique take on sushi kaiseki, using fresh, local ingredients from the Seto Inland Sea. The meal was a culinary journey, with each course beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. The floor-to-ceiling windows provided stunning views of the courtyard, adding to the overall ambiance. Luka, who isn't usually a fan of sushi, surprised us by trying (and enjoying) a few of the dishes. Ana and I savored every bite, appreciating the artistry and skill that went into creating such a memorable meal.

Before heading back to My Lodge Naoshima, I decided to check out the local bar scene. I stopped by Kon'nichiwa. The bar had a great atmosphere, with a mix of locals and tourists enjoying drinks and conversation. I struck up a conversation with a local artist who shared some insights into the Naoshima art scene. It was fascinating to hear his perspective and learn more about the island's creative community.

As I reflect on today’s adventures, I am struck by the diversity of experiences Naoshima offers. From serene coastal landscapes to thought-provoking art installations and exquisite cuisine, this island truly has something for everyone. And as we prepare for another day of exploration, I am filled with anticipation for what tomorrow will bring. Tomorrow, we plan to explore La forêt des murmures, Walking Ark, and Cultural Melting Bath: Project for Naoshima. I am particularly intrigued by La forêt des murmures and its promise of an immersive artistic experience. It's days like these that make travel so rewarding, reminding me of the beauty and wonder that exists in the world.
Ana and Luka are sound asleep, dreaming of the art and adventures that await us. I'm looking forward to sharing more of our journey with you all. Until tomorrow!
