Island Hopping: Monkeys, Myths, and Modern Art

Today’s adventure took us beyond Naoshima to its neighboring islands, Shodoshima and Teshima, offering a delightful mix of wildlife encounters and artistic explorations. It was a day of unexpected discoveries, proving that the Seto Inland Sea has endless treasures to offer.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at APRON CAFE. Maki and Yoichi, the owners, have created a menu that’s both nutritious and delicious, using local ingredients from the Setouchi region. I opted for the seasonal special, a vibrant plate of fresh vegetables and a perfectly cooked omelet. It’s amazing how they infuse Japanese sensibilities into international cuisine. Fueled up, we set off for our first destination: Shodoshima Island and the Chōshi Valley Monkey Kingdom Natural Zoo.

The ferry ride to Shodoshima was smooth, offering stunning views of the Seto Inland Sea. The kids were excited, chattering about seeing monkeys up close. As we approached the Chōshi Valley, the landscape transformed into a lush, green paradise. The Chōshi Valley Monkey Kingdom Natural Zoo is nestled in these picturesque hills and is home to around 500 Japanese macaques.

The monkeys roam freely in their natural habitat, making it an immersive experience. Luka was thrilled to feed them soybeans directly from his hands. It was a bit daunting at first, but the monkeys were gentle and surprisingly polite. Ana captured some fantastic photos of the monkeys grooming each other and huddling together. The zoo is designed to mimic the monkeys' natural habitat, providing them with a spacious environment where they can thrive.

Art evokes the mystery without which the world would not exist.

After spending a few hours with our primate friends, we hopped on another ferry to Teshima Island, home to the Teshima 8 Million Lab.

This art installation, conceived by artist Sputniko!, explores the Shinto concept of Yaoyorozu, the myriad of gods believed to reside in almost everything. The lab aims to create new members of Yaoyorozu, blending emerging science and art to form a new mythology.

The Teshima 8 Million Lab is located in the seaside area of Kou, in southwestern Teshima. The architecture itself is fascinating, with a pillarless space created by suspending wooden shafts from steel beams. The approach to the building is lined with torii gates, emphasizing the connection between the lab and the mountain venerated by Toyotamahime Shrine.

Inside, the exhibits were thought-provoking, prompting us to consider the future of nature and beliefs as science continues to advance. Luka was particularly intrigued by the displays, asking questions about genetics and mythology. It’s wonderful to see him engaging with art on such a deep level.

After our intellectual excursion, we were ready for lunch. We headed to Ishii Shouten, a charming udon noodle shop in Honmura.

The aroma of freshly made udon filled the air as we stepped inside. I ordered their famous beef udon, and it was heavenly. The noodles were perfectly chewy, and the broth was rich and flavorful. Ana and Luka enjoyed their bowls just as much.

With our bellies full, we decided to explore the Honmura district a bit. We stopped by the Honmura Lounge & Archive.

A former agricultural cooperative supermarket transformed into an information center for the Art House Project. The lounge, designed by architect Ryue Nishizawa, provides information on the artists and architects involved in the Art House Project. It also sells tickets and related books, making it a great starting point for exploring the art in Honmura.

We learned about the history of the Art House Project, where artists transform empty houses in residential areas into works of art. It’s a fascinating concept, weaving history and memories into the spaces. The kids enjoyed browsing the books and looking at the photos of the various art houses.

As evening approached, we made our way back to Naoshima, stopping for dinner at Yuunagi.

This restaurant, located near Miyanoura Port, is known for its fresh seafood. I opted for the grilled fish set, while Ana and Luka enjoyed the udon noodles. The seafood was incredibly fresh, a testament to the island’s coastal location.

After dinner, we decided to check out maimai, a local bar known for its relaxed atmosphere.

It’s a cozy spot, perfect for unwinding after a long day. I enjoyed a glass of local craft beer while Ana sipped on fresh juice. Luka, of course, had a soda. It was a lovely way to end the day, soaking in the island vibes and reflecting on our adventures.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Shodoshima further, visiting the Kankakei Ropeway Kountei Station, Tonosho port Tourist centre and the Shodoshima Olive Garden. I am particularly looking forward to the Olive Garden, as I have heard wonderful things about its beauty and tranquility.

As I sit here writing, I can’t help but feel grateful for the experiences we had today. From playful monkeys to thought-provoking art, the Seto Inland Sea continues to surprise and inspire. It’s a reminder that travel is not just about seeing new places, but also about opening our minds to new ideas and perspectives. And with that thought, I bid you goodnight from the enchanting islands of Japan.

Reflecting on today’s journey, I’m reminded of how art and nature intertwine to create unforgettable experiences. It’s these moments of discovery that make travel so rewarding.
