Naoshima's Hidden Gems
Today was all about embracing the hidden gems of Naoshima, those special spots that offer a unique perspective on this art-filled island. From panoramic views to cozy cafes and local eateries, it was a day of discovery and delight, shared with my wonderful family.
Our day started with a hearty breakfast at Akaito Coffee. I'd heard whispers about this place being a haven for coffee and literature lovers, and it didn't disappoint. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled the air as we stepped inside, a comforting promise for the day ahead. Luka was immediately drawn to the bookshelves brimming with used books and magazines. Ana and I enjoyed rich espressos while Luka flipped through a manga, completely captivated. It was a perfect way to ease into the morning, surrounded by the artistic spirit of Naoshima.

After breakfast, we decided to head to the Shihōzashi Sightseeing Tower. It was a bit of a trek to get there, but the promise of breathtaking views kept us motivated. As we ascended, the landscape transformed, offering glimpses of the Seto Inland Sea and the surrounding islands. Reaching the top, we were rewarded with a panoramic vista that stretched as far as the eye could see. The kids were thrilled, pointing out landmarks and ships in the distance. I tried to capture the scene with my camera, but no photo could truly do justice to the sheer beauty of the moment. I made a mental note to remind myself to bring the adapter for Japanese electrical outlets that I had forgotten, as I knew that I would need to charge my camera later.

Next on our list was the Benesse House Park. This part of the Benesse complex is built on a gentle slope, blending seamlessly with the natural beauty of Setouchi. As we strolled through the park, we encountered various outdoor art installations, each designed to interact with the landscape. Luka was particularly fascinated by a sculpture that resembled a giant, polished pebble. Ana appreciated the way the art was integrated into the environment, creating a harmonious blend of nature and creativity. We spent a leisurely couple of hours exploring the park, soaking in the art and the serene atmosphere.

For lunch, we chose EAT LOCAL Naoshima Shokudo, drawn in by its promise of fresh, local ingredients. Located within the Tsutsujiso complex, the eatery had a cozy and inviting atmosphere. We opted for a selection of dishes, including the boiled whitebait rice bowl, fried chicken set meal, and a rice bowl topped with fresh sashimi. Each dish was a celebration of the region's culinary heritage, bursting with flavor and freshness. Luka devoured the fried chicken, while Ana savored the delicate flavors of the sashimi. I particularly enjoyed the whitebait rice bowl, a simple yet satisfying dish that perfectly captured the essence of Naoshima's local cuisine.

After our delightful lunch, we decided to take it easy and simply enjoy the island pace. We stopped by the 7-Eleven Naoshima Shop to pick up some snacks and drinks. I marveled at how even a convenience store could feel unique on this island. We found a quiet spot by the sea and watched the waves gently roll in, the kids collecting seashells and building sandcastles. These simple moments, away from the crowds and the art, were just as precious and memorable.

As evening approached, we made our way to Nagomi for dinner. This restaurant, located within the Naoshima welfare center, offered a unique glimpse into the local community. It felt like a communal canteen, with locals and tourists sharing tables and enjoying hearty Japanese meals. The menu featured 'Syokudo and Teishoku' style dishes, highlighting seasonal specialties. I opted for a set meal with grilled fish, while Ana chose a vegetable curry. Luka, ever the adventurous eater, tried a bit of everything. The food was simple, honest, and delicious, a true taste of Naoshima's everyday life.

Tomorrow, we're planning to explore Teshima, another island known for its art and natural beauty. We'll visit the Chōshi valley Monkey Kingdom Natural Zoo, the Teshima 8 Million Lab, and the Honmura Lounge & Archive. I am especially excited about visiting the Monkey Kingdom, as Luka has been asking to see some monkeys. We'll also try out some local restaurants like APRON CAFE for breakfast, Ishii Shouten for lunch, and Yuunagi for dinner. And perhaps, if we have time, we'll end the day with a drink at maimai.
As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to share these experiences with my family. Naoshima continues to surprise and inspire, offering a unique blend of art, culture, and natural beauty. I'm already looking forward to what tomorrow brings.
