Exploring Naoshima's Tranquil Side

Today was a day of gentle exploration, a chance to breathe in the quieter corners of Naoshima and reflect on the art we've encountered so far. It's amazing how this small island can offer such diverse experiences, from the grand museums to the simple beauty of its natural landscapes. I was excited to see what today would bring, especially with my family by my side.

Our morning began with breakfast at Little Plum. I've always appreciated a good start to the day, and this cozy spot didn't disappoint. The atmosphere was relaxed and inviting, perfect for fueling up before our adventures. We enjoyed some simple fare, reminiscing about our home in Zurich while savoring the local flavors. It's funny how even the most familiar routines can feel special when you're in a new place.

After breakfast, we set out for Yokobou Park. The park was a welcome escape, a place where the kids could run around and I could take a moment to appreciate the tranquility. The park wasn't very crowded, allowing us to enjoy the peaceful surroundings. Luka, especially, loved exploring the open spaces, his laughter echoing through the trees. It reminded me of our hikes in the Swiss Alps, though the scenery here was distinctly Japanese.

Next on our list was Danyama. The observation deck offered stunning views of the coastline and the Seto Inland Sea. The gentle breeze and the panoramic vista created a sense of calm that was truly restorative. Ana and I took some photos, trying to capture the beauty of the moment, while Luka pointed out the different islands in the distance. It's these shared experiences that I cherish the most, the moments when we can connect with each other and with the world around us.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.

For lunch, we decided to try NaoPAM/Shima-Shoku-Do Miyanda. This charming eatery is known for its delicious fish set meals, and it was a delightful culinary experience. The menu changes daily, highlighting the freshest catches. I opted for the grilled fish set, while Ana tried the sashimi. Luka, surprisingly, enjoyed the miso soup, barnacles and all! The staff was incredibly welcoming, making us feel right at home. It's these small, local establishments that often provide the most authentic travel experiences.

In the afternoon, we visited the Ando Museum. As an engineer, I've always been fascinated by architecture, and Tadao Ando's work is particularly inspiring. The museum itself is a blend of traditional Japanese design and modern architectural innovation. The contrast between the wooden exterior and the concrete interior was striking, a testament to Ando's vision. The exhibits offered a glimpse into his creative process, showcasing his sketches, models, and photographs. It was a thought-provoking experience, one that left me with a renewed appreciation for the power of design.

As evening approached, we decided to indulge in some comfort food at Luke's Pizza & Grill. After days of traditional Japanese cuisine, a pizza sounded like just the thing. The restaurant had a cozy, inviting atmosphere, and the aroma of freshly baked pizza filled the air. We ordered a couple of pizzas to share, and they were delicious. The crust was crispy, the toppings were fresh, and the flavors were satisfying. It was a simple meal, but it hit the spot.

To cap off the day, we ventured to Chikurin, a local bar. I don't often frequent bars, but I was curious to experience Naoshima's nightlife. The bar was small and intimate, with a friendly atmosphere. We ordered some local sake and chatted with the bartender, learning more about the island and its people. It was a pleasant way to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. As someone who generally keeps to himself, I found myself enjoying the easy camaraderie of the place.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Shihōzashi Sightseeing Tower, Benesse House Park and Drink a Cup of Tea. I am looking forward to more exploration and artistic discovery. It's been a fulfilling day, filled with art, nature, and good company. I feel grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with my family, creating memories that will last a lifetime. It's days like these that remind me why I love to travel, to explore, and to connect with the world around me.

Thinking about tomorrow, I'm excited to visit the Shihōzashi Sightseeing Tower, promising panoramic views, and the Benesse House Park, where art and nature intertwine. I'm also intrigued by the prospect of simply drinking a cup of tea, an activity that seems perfectly suited to the tranquil atmosphere of Naoshima. And perhaps, if time allows, we'll do some shopping at the 7-Eleven.

Naoshima continues to surprise and delight me, offering a unique blend of art, culture, and natural beauty. It's a place where you can lose yourself in the moment, connect with your loved ones, and discover new perspectives. As we prepare for our final days on the island, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude and anticipation, eager to see what other treasures await us.

“The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.”
