Echoes of the Past

Today was all about immersing ourselves in the raw, untamed beauty surrounding Matera. We ventured into the Parco Regionale della Murgia Materana, and explored the ancient town of Gravina di Matera, each location whispering stories of civilizations long gone. It’s days like these that remind me why I love to travel – to connect with history and nature in a way that transcends the everyday.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Ristorante Burro Salato - Cucina Francese e Lucana a Matera.

The blend of French and Lucanian cuisine was the perfect way to start our explorations. I opted for one of their savory crêpes, while Jean-Pierre chose a traditional Lucanian pastry. It's always a treat to find a place that marries different culinary traditions so seamlessly. This little bistrot is a gem, and I'm already dreaming of returning!

Fueled and ready, we set off for the Parco Regionale della Murgia Materana. As we drove closer, the landscape transformed into a rugged, almost lunar terrain. The park is a sprawling expanse of rocky hills, deep ravines, and hidden cave churches – a testament to the ingenuity and resilience of the people who have called this place home for millennia.

We parked the car and began our hike, the sun beating down on us. Good thing I remembered to pack sunscreen! The trails were well-marked, but the terrain was uneven, so I was grateful for my trusty walking shoes. As we walked, I couldn't help but marvel at the panoramic views of Matera's Sassi, perched dramatically on the opposite hillside. It felt like stepping into a postcard, a scene so surreal it was hard to believe it was real.

One of the highlights of our time in the park was discovering the rupestrian churches, ancient places of worship carved directly into the rock. These churches, adorned with fading frescoes, offered a glimpse into the spiritual lives of the Byzantine monks who once inhabited these caves. The silence within these sacred spaces was profound, broken only by the occasional rustle of wind or the chirping of birds. It was a humbling experience, connecting us to a history that stretched back centuries.

We spent hours exploring the park, losing ourselves in its labyrinthine trails and soaking up its unique atmosphere. Jean-Pierre, ever the history enthusiast, was captivated by the archaeological sites scattered throughout the park, remnants of prehistoric settlements and ancient agricultural practices. I, on the other hand, was more drawn to the natural beauty of the landscape, the wildflowers blooming amidst the rocks, and the panoramic views that seemed to stretch on forever.

After our morning hike, we were ready for lunch. We decided to try Pietra Viva, a restaurant recommended for its traditional Materan cuisine. Unfortunately, it seems this restaurant is permanently closed. Instead, we found a lovely little spot that offered a delightful array of local dishes. I savored some handmade pasta with a rich tomato sauce, while Jean-Pierre enjoyed a hearty meat stew. It was the perfect way to refuel after our morning adventure.

In the afternoon, we drove to Gravina di Matera, a historic town perched on the edge of a deep canyon. The drive itself was stunning, winding through rolling hills and picturesque countryside. As we approached Gravina, the town appeared like a mirage, its ancient buildings clinging precariously to the edge of the ravine.

We parked the car and began our exploration of the town, wandering through its narrow streets and admiring its historic architecture. Gravina is known for its Romanesque cathedral, its medieval castle, and its ancient underground tunnels, remnants of its long and turbulent history. We visited the cathedral, marveling at its intricate stonework and its soaring interior. We also explored the ruins of the castle, imagining what life must have been like for the knights and nobles who once called this place home.

One of the most fascinating aspects of Gravina is its underground tunnels, a network of ancient passageways that run beneath the town. These tunnels, used for centuries as escape routes and storage spaces, offer a glimpse into the town's hidden history. We joined a guided tour of the tunnels, descending into the darkness and exploring its labyrinthine passages. It was a bit claustrophobic, but also incredibly exciting, like stepping into a real-life Indiana Jones movie.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to San Biagio Ristorante - Matera centro sassi for dinner. This restaurant, located in the heart of Matera's Sassi, offered stunning views of the city's ancient cave dwellings. The food was exceptional, a modern take on traditional Materan cuisine. I savored some lamb, while Jean-Pierre enjoyed a pasta dish with truffles. It was the perfect way to end our day of exploration, savoring delicious food while soaking up the magical atmosphere of Matera.

Sometimes, the most rewarding travel experiences are the ones that transport you to another time and place, allowing you to connect with history and nature in a profound way.

After dinner, we decided to check out AREA 8, a local bar known for its lively atmosphere. We enjoyed a couple of drinks, chatting with locals and soaking up the vibrant energy of the place. It was a fun way to unwind after a long day of exploring. As we walked back to our hotel, the stars twinkled above us, casting a magical glow over Matera's ancient stones.

Reflecting on the day, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and history of Matera and Gravina. These ancient places, with their rugged landscapes and hidden treasures, had touched my soul in a way that few other destinations have. It was a reminder that travel is not just about seeing new places, but about connecting with the past, embracing the present, and opening ourselves to the wonders of the world.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore more of Matera itself, including the Palombaro Lungo, Casa Noha, and the Cave di Matera. I can't wait to see what other hidden gems this ancient city has in store for us!

Before drifting off to sleep, I realized I still needed an adapter for my Italian power outlets. I completely forgot to pack one! I'll have to make a note to pick one up tomorrow. And maybe a light rain jacket, just in case the weather turns. Even with these minor oversights, I wouldn't trade this experience for anything. Good night from Matera!
