A Day Among Echoes of History

Today, Matera truly felt like stepping back in time. Jean-Pierre and I immersed ourselves in the city's rich tapestry of history and culture, wandering through ancient streets and marveling at the architectural wonders that have stood for centuries. It's days like these that remind me why I love to travel – to connect with the past and understand the stories that have shaped our world.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Ristorante '900 Casa Taccardi. The reviews I had read online were spot on; the atmosphere was cozy, and the service was impeccable. We enjoyed fresh pastries and strong Italian coffee, fueling up for a day of exploration. The restaurant had a charming ambiance, with an elegant touch that made our morning feel special. I overheard another patron mentioning that the owner was very welcoming, which added a personal touch to the experience.

With our appetites satisfied, we made our way to the Cattedrale di Maria Santissima della Bruna e Sant'Eustachio. As we approached the cathedral, its grandeur was immediately striking. Perched atop the highest point of Matera, it commanded a panoramic view of the city and the surrounding landscape. The cathedral's Apulian-Romanesque style was evident in its intricate facade, complete with a stunning rose window. I learned that the cathedral was built in the 13th century on the site of a former Benedictine monastery. Inside, the Baroque interior was breathtaking, adorned with ornate decorations and beautiful artwork. Jean-Pierre and I spent a considerable amount of time admiring the details, from the wooden choir carved in 1453 to the paintings by the Calabrian artist Battista Santoro.

To walk through Matera is to walk through the pages of history, each stone whispering tales of resilience and adaptation.

Next on our itinerary was Palazzo Lanfranchi, a 17th-century palace that now houses the National Museum of Matera. This was one of the locations I was most excited about today. The palace itself is a stunning example of Baroque architecture, and its transformation into a museum has breathed new life into its historic walls. Inside, we explored a diverse collection of art and artifacts that showcased the cultural heritage of the region. One of the highlights was the collection of works by Carlo Levi, including his famous Lucania '61 panels. These pieces offered a poignant reflection on the lives of the people of Basilicata and their struggles. I also appreciated the Camillo D'Errico Collection, which featured paintings from the Neapolitan, Venetian, Lombard, and Flemish Schools of the 17th and 18th centuries.

After immersing ourselves in art and history, it was time for lunch. We headed to Osteria MateraMì, a charming eatery known for its traditional Italian cuisine. The osteria was nestled in the heart of Matera, and its warm, inviting atmosphere made us feel right at home. We savored authentic dishes like sausage pasta, and I tried the ricotta with jam, which was a delightful surprise. The portions were generous, and the prices were reasonable, making it a perfect spot for a midday meal. While enjoying our lunch, we overheard other diners praising the friendly staff and the beautiful terrace views. I have to agree, the views of the Sassi Matera from there were incredible.

In the afternoon, we ventured to the Chiesa Rupestre di San Nicola all'Ofra, a rock-hewn church located on a rocky outcrop. The walk to the church was an adventure in itself, as we traversed through the rugged terrain and took in the breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. When we finally arrived, we were struck by the church's unassuming exterior, which belied the treasures hidden within. Inside, we discovered a series of frescoes and religious iconography that showcased the artistry and devotion of the medieval community that once worshipped there. Although the frescoes were weathered by time, they still resonated with spiritual energy, offering a glimpse into the past.

As the day drew to a close, we decided to unwind at Monkey Drink House, a quirky bar known for its fantastic selection of cocktails. The bar had a cozy atmosphere, and the staff was incredibly friendly, making us feel welcome. Jean-Pierre and I sampled a few of their signature cocktails, enjoying the lively music and the convivial atmosphere. I noticed that the bar was popular among locals and tourists alike, creating a vibrant mix of people.

For dinner, we chose Baccanti, a restaurant that promised a refined dining experience. The restaurant's location in a cave created a unique and enchanting ambiance. We savored dishes that reflected the culinary traditions of the Lucania region, accompanied by a glass of local wine. The service was impeccable, and the atmosphere was both elegant and relaxing. It was the perfect way to end our day of exploration.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Crypt of Original Sin, the Church of Saint Mary of Idris, and Belvedere di Piazza Giovanni Pascoli. I'm particularly excited about visiting the Crypt of Original Sin, which is known for its ancient frescoes and its significance as a historical landmark. Before that, we'll start the day off with breakfast at Basquiat. I'm looking forward to another day of discovery in this fascinating city.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and history of Matera. This city has a way of transporting you to another time, allowing you to connect with the past in a profound way. It's a place that I will always cherish, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.

The events of the day reminded me of something my grandmother used to say back in Amherst: Travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer. And she was absolutely right. Each experience, each encounter, adds to the richness of our lives, expanding our understanding of the world and our place in it.

One thing I did forget to pack was an adapter for the Italian power outlets. Luckily, I was able to purchase one at a local shop, but it was a minor inconvenience that could have been avoided. I also wish I had brought a light rain jacket, as the weather in Matera can be unpredictable. But these are small details in the grand scheme of things, and they certainly didn't detract from the overall experience.

There are a few concerts and events coming up in Matera, such as the Indie Unconference - Europe 2025 from June 18-21, and Giuseppe Venezia & Fabrizio Bosso on June 13. It is always great to see a city so full of life and things to do.

Matera, with its ancient stones and timeless beauty, has captured my heart. It's a city that I will never forget, and I can't wait to share more of my adventures with you in the days to come.
