Waterfalls and Whiskey: An Icelandic Adventure

Today was all about embracing the raw beauty of Iceland and finding a little warmth amidst the chilly October air. Jean-Pierre and I set out to explore some of the South Coast's most stunning waterfalls, and then, as the day wound down, we sought refuge in the heart of Reykjavik, discovering a cozy spot perfect for warming our spirits.

We started our day, as usual, with breakfast at Ásgarður in Kerlingarfjöll. It's become our little ritual, fueling up for the day's adventures with a hearty meal. The forecast predicted a mix of sun and showers, so we layered up, making sure our waterproofs were within easy reach. The weather in Kerlingarfjöll in October can be quite fresh, with average temperatures around 32°F, so warm clothes are a must.

Our first stop was Seljalandsfoss, a waterfall I'd been dreaming about since we started planning this trip. Driving from Kerlingarfjöll, the landscape transformed into a panorama of golden hues, a sure sign of autumn in Iceland. As we approached Seljalandsfoss, the waterfall appeared like a silver ribbon against the rugged cliffs. The parking fee was 1000 ISK, about $7 USD, which covered both Seljalandsfoss and the nearby Gljúfrabúi.

The unique thing about Seljalandsfoss is that you can walk behind it. Despite the bracing spray, the experience was absolutely magical. Jean-Pierre and I took turns capturing photos, giggling as the wind whipped our hair and the mist kissed our faces. I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the sheer power and beauty of nature. It’s a good thing we packed our portable phone charger, because our phones were working overtime capturing the magic of the falls. I made a mental note to buy an extra memory card for the camera tomorrow. It would be just my luck to run out of space when we visit Surtshellir and The Cave Vidgelmir tomorrow!

The best view comes after the hardest climb.

Next on our list was Barnafoss, also known as the 'Children's Waterfall'. The drive to Barnafoss took us through more of Iceland's mesmerizing landscapes. Unlike Seljalandsfoss, which is known for its graceful cascade, Barnafoss is a series of rapids that burst through a narrow, rocky gorge. The deep turquoise water contrasted dramatically with the black lava rock, creating a stunning visual. Jean-Pierre was particularly fascinated by the folklore surrounding Barnafoss, a tragic tale of two children who fell into the falls. It added a layer of depth to the already breathtaking scenery.

After a hearty lunch back at Ásgarður, we decided to head towards Reykjavik. The drive was scenic, and we chatted about our favorite moments from the trip so far. As the sun began to set, casting a warm glow over the city, we checked into our accommodation and decided to explore Reykjavik's nightlife.

Our destination for the evening was Dillon Whiskey Bar, a spot recommended by a local we met back in Kerlingarfjöll. Tucked away in downtown Reykjavik, Dillon is a cozy haven for whiskey lovers. The bar is located upstairs from the Chuck Norris Grill, through a red door. As we stepped inside, we were greeted by the warm, inviting atmosphere and the aroma of aged whiskey. With over 180 types of whiskey on offer, it was a tough choice, but the friendly bartender helped us navigate the extensive menu. Jean-Pierre, ever the adventurous one, opted for a glass of Flóki, a domestic Icelandic whiskey. I decided on a classic Scotch, savoring the smooth, smoky flavor as we settled into our seats.

The bar itself is in one of the oldest wood houses in Reykjavik, adding to its unique charm. The walls were adorned with vintage rock posters, and the air was filled with the sounds of classic rock music. It was the perfect spot to unwind after a day of exploring, surrounded by fellow travelers and locals alike. Dillon has happy hour every day from 2 PM to 7 PM, which made our visit even more enjoyable.

We spent the evening chatting with other patrons, sharing stories and travel tips. It's amazing how a shared love for travel and a good drink can bring people together. As the night drew to a close, we made our way back to our accommodation, our hearts full of the day's adventures.

As I reflect on today, I'm reminded of the simple joys of travel: the awe-inspiring beauty of nature, the warmth of human connection, and the comfort of a good drink in a cozy setting. Tomorrow, we're planning to explore the caves of Surtshellir and Víðgelmir, which I'm really looking forward to. But for now, I'll drift off to sleep, dreaming of waterfalls and whiskey, and the magic of Iceland.

I’m so glad we decided to come to Iceland in the fall. The shifting landscape offers golden tones, perfect for photographs. Plus, there are fewer people than in the summer, especially in the mornings. If we’re lucky, we might even catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights!

Ásgarður was great, as usual. I love that we can always count on them for a hearty meal. The staff is so friendly, and the food is always delicious. It’s definitely one of the highlights of staying in Kerlingarfjöll. I think Jean-Pierre would agree that the best part of the day was Dillon Whiskey Bar. He’s always up for trying new whiskeys, and he was really impressed with the selection. I think we’ll be back there again before we leave Reykjavik!

The weather was a bit of a mixed bag today, but we didn’t let it dampen our spirits. We were prepared for anything, and we made the most of it. I’m so glad we packed our waterproofs and warm clothes. It made all the difference. The weather in Kerlingarfjöll can be unpredictable, so it’s always best to be prepared. I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings. I’m especially excited about exploring the caves. I’ve always been fascinated by caves, and I can’t wait to see what Surtshellir and Víðgelmir have in store for us.
