Immerse yourself in Pelion's serene beauty, from peaceful squares to lively bars, and create unforgettable memories with friends.
Finding Peace and Music in Pelion
Today was a day of contrasts, blending the serene beauty of Pelion's natural springs and historic squares with the vibrant energy of its local music scene. It’s amazing how much a change of scenery and good company can lift your spirits. After a busy few days, it was nice to slow down and appreciate the simple things.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Akti. The restaurant was right by the sea in Agios Ioannis, offering stunning views as we enjoyed our meal. The fresh sea air and the sound of the waves made for a perfect start to the day. I opted for a traditional Greek yogurt with honey and walnuts, while the others tried various pastries and strong Greek coffee. It’s these simple, authentic experiences that I truly cherish.
After breakfast, we decided to explore some of the local attractions. Our first stop was the Sycamore of peace square. This historical landmark in Makrinitsa is dominated by a magnificent sycamore tree, symbolizing peace and tranquility. The village is known as the Balcony of Pelion due to its stunning views. The square was a perfect gathering place, offering a serene atmosphere for relaxation and reflection. We wandered around, taking photos and soaking in the rich culture and history of the area. The traditional stone houses and cobblestone streets added to the charm.

Makrinitsa is such a picturesque village, and it was easy to see why it's a favorite spot for both locals and tourists. We spent some time chatting with a local artisan who was showcasing his crafts in the square. He told us stories about the village and its history, which made the experience even more special. It's these unexpected encounters that often become the highlights of my travels.
Sometimes, the most memorable moments are found in the quiet corners of the world, where nature and history intertwine.
Next on our list was the Spring Of Manas, located in the charming village of Portaria. The spring is renowned for its stunning natural beauty, surrounded by verdant landscapes. The sound of crystal-clear water flowing created a soothing backdrop, inviting us to pause and appreciate the serene environment. We took a leisurely stroll along the paths that meandered through the area, enjoying the peaceful ambiance. The lush greenery and vibrant flowers made it a perfect spot for photography.

As we explored the area, we noticed several hiking trails that wind through the surrounding landscape. Although we didn't have time for a full-fledged hike, we made a mental note to return and explore them further. The fresh scent of pine trees and the gentle sound of flowing water were incredibly relaxing. It was a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. I am so glad I remembered to pack my camera.
For lunch, we headed to Agora 1955 in Portaria. Housed in a retro building made of stone and wood, the restaurant focuses on earthy delights rather than complicated servings. It’s run by the Karaiskos family, who also owns Karaiskos Farm. The restaurant offers a deli section where you can buy Thessaly-made products like cheese, olive oil, and herbs. We enjoyed a delightful meal of handmade pies, fresh salads, and local wine in their flowery courtyard. The warm donuts covered with Greek honey and homemade ice cream were an absolute treat.

After a satisfying lunch, we took some time to explore the deli section of Agora 1955. Jean-Pierre was particularly interested in the local wines, and we ended up purchasing a bottle of red to enjoy later. I picked up some herbs and spices to bring back to Lyon. It's always nice to have a little piece of our travels to bring home with us.
As the day wound down, we decided to check out the Alter Ego Rock & Blues Bar in Volos. This lively bar offers an eclectic mix of rock and blues performances, showcasing local talent. The cozy interior, adorned with vintage memorabilia, created a nostalgic vibe. The drink menu was impressively diverse, offering everything from classic cocktails to local Greek wines. We spent the evening enjoying the music and the vibrant atmosphere. It was the perfect way to end a day of tranquility and exploration.

The bar was packed with locals and tourists alike, all enjoying the music and the lively atmosphere. The band was fantastic, playing a mix of classic rock and blues covers. I even managed to get Jean-Pierre to dance, which is always a win! It was a fun and memorable night, and I'm so glad we decided to check it out. I stuck to beer for the evening, and Jean-Pierre sampled some local wine.
Looking ahead to tomorrow, our final day in Pelion, we plan to visit the Pelion Cross of Jesus Observation Point and the village of Manolas. I’m hoping to capture some stunning panoramic views before we head back to Athens. It’s hard to believe our trip is coming to an end. These past nine days have been filled with so many incredible experiences, and I’m already looking forward to our next adventure. I’m also planning to stop by Peritechno to pick up some last-minute souvenirs before heading to the airport.
Pelion has truly captured my heart with its blend of natural beauty, rich history, and vibrant culture. It’s a place where you can find both tranquility and excitement, and I can’t wait to return someday. For now, I’ll cherish the memories and look forward to sharing more stories from our travels.
