In the Footsteps of Legends

Today was all about embracing the mythical heart of Pelion. I’ve always been fascinated by Greek mythology, so the idea of walking where centaurs were said to roam was incredibly appealing. Jean-Pierre and I, along with our friends, set out to explore the famed Centaurs' Path and indulge in the local culinary scene. It was a day filled with enchanting landscapes, delightful flavors, and the kind of spontaneous discoveries that make traveling so rewarding.

Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at Archontiko Traditional Restaurant in Portaria. The hotel is located at the center of Portaria, near shops with traditional handmade products. I opted for some local pastries and strong Greek coffee, while Jean-Pierre enjoyed a selection of savory pies. The restaurant had a cozy, traditional feel, and it was the perfect way to fuel up for our hike.

With our appetites satisfied, we made our way to the Centaurs' Path, a trail that promised a walk through the realm of legends. According to Greek Mythology, Centaurs were hybrid beasts (half humans and half horses) that used to live on Mount Pelion. The path starts just outside Portaria, and as we began our ascent, the air was filled with the fresh scent of pine and damp earth. The trail is well-marked with red circles on stones. The sunlight filtered through the dense canopy, creating a magical atmosphere. It wasn't hard to imagine these creatures roaming freely in the woods of Mount Pelion.

The path itself was gentle, following the course of a small stream. Wooden bridges crisscrossed the water, and small waterfalls added to the picturesque scenery. The hike is not difficult, so everyone can enjoy it. We paused frequently to take photos, capturing the beauty of the natural surroundings. The hike generally lasts less than 40 minutes, making it ideal for a rewarding adventure.

It felt as though we were stepping back in time, connecting with the ancient stories that have shaped this land.

As we walked, I couldn't help but think about the stories of Chiron, the most famous of the centaurs, known for his wisdom and healing abilities. It was easy to see why these mythical creatures were associated with Pelion; the landscape exudes a sense of wildness and untamed beauty. The Centaur’s Trail is a short but beautiful route that follows the bed of one of the many streams that surround Portaria.

After completing the Centaurs' Path, we decided to explore the local shops in Portaria. We stopped by Centaurs Cave SHOP, Μαυρουδάκης Γιώργος, a charming little store filled with local crafts and souvenirs. I picked up a hand-painted ceramic magnet as a memento of our mythical adventure. There are even horse riding trips to Centaurus Cave.

In the late afternoon, we decided to embrace the Pelion Activities and explore more of the region. The possibilities seemed endless, from boat tours to sea caves. Instead, we opted for a scenic drive through the mountains, stopping at various viewpoints to admire the panoramic vistas. The sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the landscape, and we found ourselves completely captivated by the beauty of Pelion.

As evening approached, we made our way to Agios Ioannis, a coastal village known for its vibrant nightlife. We had dinner at SPECIAL DELIGHT restaurant & cocktail bar, a beachfront establishment with a lively atmosphere. The restaurant is located 0m from the beach. I savored fresh seafood while Jean-Pierre enjoyed a perfectly grilled souvlaki. To cap off the evening, we ordered cocktails and watched the stars come out over the Aegean Sea.

Reflecting on the day, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience the magic of Pelion. It was a day of mythical exploration, culinary indulgence, and spontaneous adventure. As we head into tomorrow, we're planning to visit Sycamore of peace square and Spring Of Manas. I am also looking forward to having dinner at O Christos. I can't wait to see what other hidden gems this region holds.

Pelion has a variety of cultural events, including festivals, concerts, theatrical performances, exhibitions, and film screenings. There are traditional dances and music, and festivals for the names of villages. It’s a great opportunity to experience the local culture.

It’s funny to think that I almost forgot my portable phone charger and travel adapter! Luckily, I managed to find a shop in town that had both, so crisis averted. It’s the little things like that that can make or break a travel day.

As I write this, I'm reminded of why I love travel so much. It's not just about seeing new places; it's about immersing yourself in the local culture, connecting with the history and mythology, and creating memories that will last a lifetime. And of course, sharing those experiences with friends makes it all the more special.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Sycamore of peace square and Spring Of Manas, and perhaps enjoy a drink at Alter Ego Rock & Blues Bar in the evening. I have a feeling Pelion still has many secrets to reveal, and I'm excited to uncover them.

I’m already looking forward to sharing more stories from our Pelion adventure! Until tomorrow!
