Following the Footsteps of Centaurs

After a long journey from Lyon, Jean-Pierre and I, along with our friends, finally arrived in Pelion, Greece. The air was crisp, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth, a welcome change from the city. I was eager to start exploring this region steeped in mythology and natural beauty. Today, we planned to hike the Centaurs' Path and visit the Pelion Cross of Jesus Observation Point, a promising start to our ten-day adventure.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Mountain Top Cafe - Pelion. Perched high up, the cafe offered stunning panoramic views that stretched across the landscape. Sipping strong Greek coffee while overlooking the vista, I felt a surge of excitement for the adventures ahead. The cafe itself had a cozy, rustic charm, and it was the perfect place to fuel up before our hike. We enjoyed some local pastries, and I made a mental note to try and recreate them back in Lyon. Jean-Pierre, ever the early bird, was already snapping photos, capturing the golden light as it touched the distant mountains.

With our appetites satisfied and our spirits high, we set off for the Centaurs' Path. According to local legend, this trail was once roamed by the mythical creatures, half-human and half-horse, and I couldn't wait to immerse myself in their world. The trailhead was conveniently located near Portaria, a charming village known for its traditional architecture and stunning views. As we started our descent into the woods, the temperature dropped noticeably, and the air grew thick with the scent of damp leaves and running water. The path was well-marked with red circles on stones, ensuring we didn't lose our way.

The Centaurs' Path was everything I had hoped for and more. A crystal-clear stream meandered alongside the trail, its gentle murmur accompanying our every step. Lush trees formed a canopy overhead, dappling the path in soft, filtered light. Wooden bridges spanned the stream at various points, adding to the fairytale atmosphere. I could almost imagine the centaurs themselves watching us from behind the ancient trees. The hike wasn't strenuous, making it perfect for all of us, even those less inclined to physical activity. We took our time, stopping frequently to admire the scenery and snap photos. I felt an incredible sense of peace and tranquility wash over me, a feeling that only nature can evoke.

The Centaurs' Path wasn't just a hike; it was a journey into a world where mythology and nature intertwined, leaving me feeling refreshed and inspired.

After about an hour of leisurely hiking, we reached a stone water fountain where we stopped to replenish our water bottles and rest. The water was ice-cold and incredibly refreshing, and we lingered for a while, enjoying the peaceful surroundings. It was the perfect spot to reflect on the beauty of the trail and the magic of Pelion. Continuing on, the path led us through an almost secret woods, where the only sound was the bubbling water. The scenery was delightful, with shady trees, wooden bridges, and small waterfalls creating a symphony of natural delights.
KRITSA Restaurant for lunch, eager to sample some authentic Pelion cuisine. The restaurant boasted a cozy atmosphere, blending modern elegance with local charm. The staff was friendly and attentive, and the menu was filled with tempting dishes. I opted for the lamb, which was cooked to perfection and melted in my mouth. Jean-Pierre chose the moussaka, a classic Greek dish, and declared it the best he'd ever had. The restaurant used fresh, local ingredients, and the flavors were simply divine. We enjoyed a bottle of local wine with our meal, savoring every sip as we recounted our adventures on the Centaurs' Path. The prices were slightly above average, but every euro was worth it.

With our bellies full and our spirits lifted, we drove to the Pelion Cross of Jesus Observation Point. The drive itself was an adventure, winding along narrow mountain roads with hairpin turns. But the views along the way were breathtaking, offering glimpses of the Pagasetic Gulf and the surrounding mountains. As we climbed higher, the air grew cooler, and the landscape became more rugged. Finally, we reached the observation point, and the view was simply spectacular. The cross itself stood tall against the skyline, a symbol of faith and hope. From this vantage point, we could see the entire Pelion peninsula laid out before us, a tapestry of green forests, quaint villages, and sparkling blue waters. I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience such beauty.

We spent some time at the observation point, soaking in the views and taking photos. Jean-Pierre, of course, was in his element, capturing the stunning scenery from every angle. As the sun began to dip below the horizon, we decided to head back down the mountain. The drive was even more thrilling in the fading light, and we arrived in Portaria just as darkness fell.

For dinner, we chose Tavern Pelion Geuseis Portaria, a restaurant recommended for its authentic Greek and Mediterranean cuisine. The tavern had an intimate atmosphere, and the staff welcomed us warmly. We ordered a selection of dishes to share, including lamb cutlets, pork, and local wine. The food was delicious, cooked with fresh ingredients and bursting with flavor. The staff was incredibly kind and sweet, making us feel right at home. The prices were attractive, and the service was spectacular.

As we sat there, enjoying our meal and each other's company, I couldn't help but reflect on the incredible day we'd had. From the mythical Centaurs' Path to the breathtaking views from the Pelion Cross of Jesus Observation Point, every moment had been filled with wonder and beauty. And the delicious food we'd enjoyed along the way had only added to the experience. Pelion had already exceeded my expectations, and I couldn't wait to see what tomorrow would bring. Tomorrow, we plan to ride The Train of Pelio (Ano Lekhonia - Milies) and relax at Limnionas Beach. I'm also hoping to find some unique souvenirs at Filokaliashandmadecreations, a local shop.

Back at our guesthouse, I unpacked my camera and began to sort through the hundreds of photos I'd taken throughout the day. Each image was a reminder of the incredible beauty and magic of Pelion. As I drifted off to sleep, I dreamt of centaurs and mountain vistas, eager to continue our adventure in this enchanting corner of Greece. I am also glad that I didn’t forget my camera, hiking boots, travel guidebook, reusable water bottle, and sunscreen. However, I did forget my portable phone charger and travel adapter, which I will need to purchase tomorrow. What a start to this amazing adventure with my friends!
