Day 2: A Nostalgic Ride and Aegean Dream: Pelion's Charms Unveiled
Step back in time on the Train of Pilio and bask in the sun at Limnionas Beach. A day of history, beauty, and seaside bliss in Pelion.
Chugging Through History and Sun-Kissed Shores
Today was a day of contrasts, a beautiful blend of history and relaxation that perfectly captures the essence of Pelion. From the charming vintage carriages of the Train of Pilio to the serene, sun-drenched sands of Limnionas Beach, it was an experience that I'll cherish. It was also a day of delicious food, with each meal offering a taste of authentic Greek cuisine, and a little shopping for unique, handmade treasures.
Our day began in Ano Lehonia, ready to board the legendary Train of Pilio. Jean-Pierre, always the punctual one, had us there bright and early, tickets in hand. The little steam train, affectionately nicknamed Moutzouris (smudgy) by the locals, was already puffing away, eager to embark on its journey. The carriages were charmingly vintage, with wooden benches that creaked with history. It felt like stepping back in time, a delightful escape from the modern world. It reminded me of the old trains my grandfather used to tell me about, sparking a sense of nostalgia and adventure.

As the train chugged along the narrow tracks, we were treated to breathtaking views of the Pelion countryside. Lush forests of plane trees, olives, and pines carpeted the slopes, while the Aegean Sea sparkled in the distance. The train wound its way through tunnels carved out of rock, over stone bridges that seemed to belong in a fairy tale, and past quaint villages untouched by the rush of modern life. It was slow travel at its finest, allowing us to savor every twist, turn, and whistle.
The route itself is a testament to engineering ingenuity, built over a century ago. We passed the five-arched stone bridge of Kalorema, a magnificent structure of carved marble and gray limestone. The highlight was crossing the steel bridge of Taxiarchis, also known as De Chirico's Bridge, named after Evaristo de Chirico, the father of the famous painter Giorgio de Chirico. It was fascinating to learn that young Giorgio was present during the construction, observing the means that later inspired his art.
The journey on the Train of Pilio is more than just a ride; it's a passage through time, a celebration of nature, and a testament to human ingenuity, all rolled into one unforgettable experience.
Our journey culminated in Milies, a charming village with traditional guesthouses, tavernas, and the beautiful church of the Archangels. We wandered through the cobblestone streets, soaking in the laid-back vibe and imagining what life must have been like a century ago. We explored the Folklore Museum and Library, one of the oldest in Greece, filled with artifacts and stories of Pelion's rich heritage.
After our historical escapade, it was time for some relaxation at Limnionas Beach. The drive there was an adventure in itself, with the road becoming increasingly narrow and winding. I was glad Jean-Pierre was behind the wheel, his years of driving in Lyon proving invaluable. The anticipation grew with every turn, and finally, we arrived at a secluded paradise.
Experience the tranquil beauty of Limnionas Beach, a hidden gem in Greece known for its crystal-clear waters and serene surroundings.
Limnionas Beach is a hidden gem, a small bay with crystal-clear turquoise waters and a golden sandy beach. Towering cliffs surrounded it, creating a sense of intimacy and seclusion. The beach was relatively deserted, perfect for those seeking tranquility away from the crowds. We found a spot on the sand, spread out our towels, and plunged into the refreshing water. The Aegean Sea was invigorating, washing away the dust and fatigue of our travels. I felt a sense of pure bliss, floating in the crystal-clear water, surrounded by the stunning natural beauty of Pelion.
According to local stories, Limnionas was the site where the Xerean fleet was destroyed in 480 BC. Today, it's a natural habitat for Mediterranean seals, protected by law. We didn't spot any seals, but we did explore the rock formations at the edge of the beach, marveling at the rugged coastline and the vastness of the Aegean Sea.
For lunch, we headed to Synantisi, a local taverna known for its traditional Greek cuisine. We feasted on fresh seafood, grilled meats, and a variety of local specialties, all washed down with a crisp, local wine. The flavors were incredible, a true taste of Greece. Jean-Pierre, ever the foodie, was in heaven, savoring every bite and declaring it the best meal he'd had in years.

Before heading back to our accommodation, we stopped at Filokaliashandmadecreations, a charming shop filled with unique, handmade treasures. I couldn't resist buying a few souvenirs, including a beautiful hand-painted ceramic bowl and a delicate silver necklace. It's always special to find items that reflect the local culture and craftsmanship, a tangible reminder of our travels.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Souarè Anelion Pelion for dinner. This restaurant is renowned for its traditional Pelion dishes and its stunning views of the surrounding mountains. We indulged in a hearty meal of slow-cooked lamb, accompanied by local cheeses and freshly baked bread. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, the perfect end to a perfect day.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much Pelion has to offer. It's a place where history, nature, and culture intertwine, creating a unique and unforgettable travel experience. The Train of Pilio was a journey back in time, Limnionas Beach a tranquil escape, and the local cuisine a culinary delight. And knowing that there are local festivals and events happening in Pelion throughout the year makes me want to explore even more.
Tomorrow, we're planning to visit the viewpoint in Portaria and the Spring of Manas. I'm excited to see more of Pelion's stunning landscapes and discover new hidden gems. But for now, it's time to rest and recharge, ready for another day of adventure.
It made me think of a quote I once read by Nikos Kazantzakis:
In order to see clearly, perhaps it is advisable to look at the world through the lens of a dream.
And today, Pelion felt like a dream come true. I'm so glad I decided to explore this hidden corner of Greece, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. I am also glad that I had my friends with me to experience it all.
The only thing I forgot to bring was my portable phone charger, so I need to remember to buy one tomorrow!
