A Fond Farewell to Chefchaouen

As our time in Chefchaouen comes to an end, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences we’ve had in this mesmerizing blue city. It feels bittersweet to pack our bags, knowing we’re leaving behind a place that has captured our hearts with its unique charm and vibrant culture. Today was all about soaking in those last precious moments, revisiting favorite spots, and discovering a few hidden gems we hadn’t yet explored.

Our final day began with a leisurely stroll through the enchanting Derb El Assri. This iconic blue alleyway, also known as Callejon El Asri, is even more captivating in the soft morning light. Jean-Pierre and I wandered through its narrow passages, admiring the intricate details of the blue-washed walls and the colorful ceramic pots adorning the doorways. It’s a photographer’s dream, and I couldn’t resist snapping a few last pictures to remember this magical place. The way the sunlight filters through the narrow streets creates such a serene and picturesque atmosphere.

The beauty of travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in the way those places change you.

Next on our list was a visit to Tetouan's old Medina map. Although Tetouan is a separate city, we found a detailed map of its ancient Medina here in Chefchaouen, which sparked our interest. It reminded us of the interconnectedness of Moroccan culture and history, and we made a mental note to visit Tetouan on a future trip. The map highlighted the city's unique blend of Spanish and Arab influences, making us eager to explore its historic streets and vibrant markets.

For lunch, we decided to try Chez Foad, a local restaurant known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine. Jean-Pierre ordered the tagine, while I opted for the couscous. Both dishes were bursting with flavor, and the portions were incredibly generous. The restaurant had a cozy, welcoming atmosphere, and we enjoyed chatting with the friendly staff about their favorite places in Chefchaouen. It was the perfect way to savor our last traditional Moroccan meal.

After lunch, feeling adventurous, we embarked on a hike to the Jebel El-Kelaa Summit. The trail was challenging, but the panoramic views from the top were well worth the effort. As we ascended, we were surrounded by the stunning Rif Mountains, their rugged peaks contrasting beautifully with the blue hues of Chefchaouen below. The air was fresh and crisp, and the silence was broken only by the occasional chirping of birds. Reaching the summit felt like a true accomplishment, and we spent a few moments soaking in the breathtaking scenery.

As the afternoon wore on, we made a stop at Hibart Souvenirs Shop to pick up a few last-minute gifts for our friends and family back home. The shop was filled with unique, handmade treasures, from intricately carved wooden boxes to colorful textiles. I found a beautiful handwoven carpet that I knew my sister would love, and Jean-Pierre picked out a set of traditional Moroccan tea glasses for his mother. It was a fun way to support local artisans and bring a piece of Chefchaouen back with us.

For our final dinner in Chefchaouen, we chose Restaurant paloma, drawn in by its enchanting ambiance and reputation for delicious Moroccan dishes. We sat on the terrace, enjoying the stunning views of the mountains as the sun began to set. The sky was ablaze with vibrant colors, casting a warm glow over the blue city. We savored every bite of our meal, reminiscing about our favorite moments from the trip. It was the perfect way to end our Moroccan adventure.

Before heading back to our hotel, we made one last stop at Café & restaurant Meftah for a cup of traditional mint tea. The café was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all enjoying the lively atmosphere and the sweet, refreshing tea. We sat outside, watching the world go by, and feeling grateful for the incredible experiences we’ve had in Chefchaouen. It’s a place that will forever hold a special place in our hearts.

As we prepare to leave Chefchaouen tomorrow, I can’t help but feel a sense of sadness. This blue city has captured our imaginations and offered us a glimpse into a culture rich in history and tradition. From exploring the labyrinthine streets of the Medina to hiking in the majestic Rif Mountains, every moment has been an adventure. I am so grateful to have shared this experience with my husband, Jean-Pierre, and I know that we will both cherish these memories for years to come.

Although our time in Chefchaouen is coming to an end, I am excited about the next chapter of our journey. We’ll be heading back to Lyon, France, where we’ll have the opportunity to reflect on our Moroccan adventure and share our stories with friends and family. I am already looking forward to planning our next trip, and I know that Chefchaouen will always hold a special place in our hearts.

Au revoir, Chefchaouen! Thank you for the memories.

I’m already looking forward to planning our next adventure, perhaps exploring more of the hidden gems in the French Alps or venturing to a new corner of the world. The possibilities are endless, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds. For now, I’ll cherish the memories we’ve made in Chefchaouen and carry a piece of this magical blue city with me wherever I go.
