Day 10: A Day of Blue Hues and Local Brews: Discovering Chefchaouen's Hidden Gems
Immerse yourself in Chefchaouen's charm: from historic sites to vibrant flavors, experience a day of Moroccan delight with Mary and Jean-Pierre.
Lost in the Blue Medina
Today was all about embracing the simple joys of Chefchaouen. It's amazing how a place can feel so familiar and yet hold so many new experiences. Jean-Pierre and I set out with no grand plans, just a desire to wander and soak in the atmosphere of this blue-washed town. It turned out to be a day filled with unexpected discoveries and delightful encounters.
Our morning began with a leisurely stroll towards the Lavadero de la ciudad. I'd read about this old washhouse, a place where locals still gather to do their laundry, and I was curious to see it for myself. As we approached, the scene was just as charming as I'd imagined. Women chatted and laughed as they scrubbed clothes in the stone basins, the sound of water mingling with their voices. It was a slice of everyday life, a world away from the touristy bustle of the main square. I couldn't help but feel a sense of connection to the community, a reminder that travel is about more than just seeing sights; it's about experiencing the rhythms of daily life.

The beauty of travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in experiencing the everyday moments that connect us all.
After the Lavadero, we decided to explore Bab Chaouen, one of the main gates of the old city. The gate itself was impressive, a sturdy stone archway that marked the entrance to the medina. But what really caught my eye were the surrounding streets, a maze of narrow alleyways lined with shops and cafes. We dove in, letting our curiosity guide us. We passed stalls piled high with colorful spices, fragrant soaps, and intricately woven carpets. The air was thick with the aroma of mint tea and grilling meat. Jean-Pierre, ever the photographer, was in his element, snapping photos of every vibrant corner.

Our wanderings eventually led us to Corazon De Marruecos, a tour agency that seemed to be a hub for local adventures. While we didn't book a tour, we did chat with one of the guides, who shared some fascinating insights into the history of Chefchaouen. He told us about the town's founding in the 15th century, its role as a refuge for Muslims and Jews fleeing Spain, and the origins of its famous blue color. It was a reminder that Chefchaouen is more than just a pretty face; it's a place with a rich and complex story.

Lunchtime found us at MIDO'S, a small restaurant that had been recommended to us by several people. It was a tiny place, with only a few tables, but the food was incredible. I ordered the falafel, while Jean-Pierre opted for a burger. Both were delicious, and the prices were incredibly reasonable. What really stood out, though, was the friendly service. The owner was so welcoming, chatting with us about our travels and offering tips on what to see in Chefchaouen. It felt like we were dining at a friend's house, a truly authentic experience. I can see why it is so popular with other travellers!

In the afternoon, we sought refuge from the midday sun at Cafeteria Lhawta. It was a simple, unassuming cafe, but the coffee was strong and the atmosphere was relaxed. We sat outside, sipping our drinks and watching the world go by. It was a perfect spot for people-watching, a chance to observe the daily rhythms of Chefchaouen life. I noticed a group of men playing cards, their faces etched with concentration. A young couple strolled by, hand in hand, their laughter echoing through the streets. An old woman sat on a doorstep, selling handmade crafts, her eyes twinkling with wisdom.

As evening approached, we decided to treat ourselves to a slightly more upscale dining experience at Restaurant Triana. The restaurant had a lovely ambiance, with traditional Moroccan decor and soft lighting. We ordered a tagine, a classic Moroccan dish of slow-cooked meat and vegetables. It was flavorful and comforting, the perfect way to end a long day of exploring. I also had a chance to chat with the owner, who was passionate about showcasing the best of Moroccan cuisine. He explained the different spices and cooking techniques, sharing his love for the culinary traditions of his country.

To cap off the evening, we ventured to Restaurant Bar Chaouen. We were hoping to find a place to unwind and enjoy a drink. The bar was lively and welcoming, with a mix of locals and tourists. We ordered a couple of drinks and settled in to soak up the atmosphere. The bar had a great vibe, with music playing and people chatting and laughing. It was a perfect way to end the day, a chance to relax and reflect on all that we had experienced.

As we walked back to our hotel, the streets of Chefchaouen were bathed in the soft glow of the streetlights. The air was cool and still, and the only sounds were the distant call to prayer and the murmur of conversations. I felt a sense of peace and contentment, a feeling that I had truly connected with this place. Chefchaouen had captured my heart, not with grand monuments or famous landmarks, but with its simple beauty, its warm hospitality, and its authentic charm.
Tomorrow, we plan to venture a bit further afield, exploring Derb El Assri and perhaps even attempting a hike up Jebel El-Kelaa Summit. But for now, I'm content to savor the memories of today, a day of blue hues and local brews, a day of discovering the hidden gems of Chefchaouen.
I am so looking forward to tomorrow and the last day of our trip together, before we head back to Lyon and our translation work, and Jean-Pierre to his software engineering.
I have loved our time together, exploring this beautiful blue city!
