First Day in Nafplio: Conquering Fortresses and Unearthing History

The journey here was quite the adventure. The flight to Athens was smooth enough, but the bus ride to Nafplio was a bit more… spirited. Let’s just say Greek bus drivers have a unique approach to navigating winding roads! But the stunning scenery – olive groves stretching as far as the eye could see, glimpses of the sparkling Aegean – made it all worthwhile. Arriving at Amymone and Adiandi, my cozy hotel for the next two weeks, felt like a warm embrace. After settling in, I was eager to start exploring.

My first stop was breakfast at Kalimera, a charming cafe I had read about. It was a delightful introduction to Greek hospitality and cuisine. I savored a traditional Greek breakfast with local pies, homemade bread, and a strong, aromatic Greek coffee. Fuelled and ready for adventure, I set off to conquer the Fortress of Palamidi.

The Fortress of Palamidi dominates the Nafplio skyline, and the climb up its infamous 999 steps was no joke! As I ascended, panting and pausing frequently to admire the ever-widening view, I couldn't help but marvel at the sheer ambition of the Venetian engineers who built this fortress in the early 18th century. The views from the top were simply breathtaking – the entire town of Nafplio spread out below, the Argolic Gulf shimmering in the distance, and the imposing Bourtzi Fortress guarding the harbor. Each of the eight bastions, named after ancient Greek heroes like Leonidas and Themistocles, offered a unique perspective and a glimpse into the fortress's strategic importance.

Wandering through the stone walls and ramparts, I imagined the soldiers who once defended this stronghold, the echoes of battles fought and won. I learned that Palamidi was captured by the Ottomans in 1715 and remained under their control until 1822 when it was seized by Greek rebels during the War of Independence. It even served as a prison for a time; Theodoros Kolokotronis, a hero of the revolution, was imprisoned here in 1833. The small chapel of Agios Andreas, built within the central bastion, was a peaceful sanctuary amidst the imposing military architecture.

After descending Palamidi (much easier on the knees!), I was ready for lunch. Alaloum Restaurant was the perfect spot. The restaurant is known for its relaxed atmosphere and generous portions of traditional Mediterranean cuisine with a creative twist. I enjoyed fresh seafood, and a crisp Greek salad, savoring the flavors of the region. It was the perfect way to recharge before my afternoon adventure.

Next on the agenda was the Archaeological Museum of Nafplio, housed in a stunning three-story Venetian building on Syntagma Square. The museum's exhibits spanned millennia, from the Paleolithic era to the Roman period, showcasing the rich history of the Argolis region. I was particularly fascinated by the discoveries from the Franchthi Cave, which documented the transition from hunting-gathering to farming, and the Mycenaean artifacts from Tiryns and Midea. The highlight was undoubtedly the Dendra Panoply, a complete set of Mycenaean armor dating back to the 15th century BC. It was incredible to see such a well-preserved example of ancient weaponry and to imagine the warriors who once wore it.

The museum was well-organized, with thematic units that made it easy to follow the development of civilization in Argolis. I learned about the early Bronze Age settlements, the rise of the Mycenaean civilization, and the later Classical and Hellenistic periods. The exhibits included pottery, tools, weapons, jewelry, and sculptures, each telling a story about the lives of the people who once inhabited this land. One of the most striking pieces was the head of a female idol from Asini, known as the 'Archon of Asini,' dating back to the 12th century BC.

After immersing myself in history, I decided to take a stroll through the charming streets of Nafplio. I stumbled upon Feelwood Concept Store, a unique shop featuring clothing and accessories. I picked up a few small souvenirs, a wooden bracelet as a reminder of my first day in Nafplio.

For dinner, I chose Aiolos Tavern, drawn in by its authentic Greek atmosphere and the promise of traditional cuisine. I wasn't disappointed. The tavern was bustling with locals and tourists alike, and the air was filled with the aroma of grilled meats and herbs. I ordered moussaka, a classic Greek dish, and a glass of local wine. The food was delicious, the service was friendly, and the atmosphere was lively. It was the perfect way to end my first day in Nafplio.

As I walked back to my hotel, the town was bathed in the soft glow of streetlights. The Fortress of Palamidi loomed in the distance, a silent sentinel watching over the town. I felt a sense of contentment and excitement for the days ahead. Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Bourtzi Fortress, a small island fortress in the harbor, and wander through Syntagma Square, the heart of Nafplio. I might even indulge in a glass of wine at alkioni wine bar & cellar. I'm also looking forward to discovering more hidden gems and savoring the local flavors of Nafplio.

Even though Jean-Pierre couldn't join me on this trip, I know he would have loved exploring the fortress and museum with me. Perhaps we can plan a trip together next year. For now, I'll continue to share my adventures with him through photos and stories.
