A Day of Discovery in Nafplio

Today was a day of diving deep into the heart of Nafplio, a town that effortlessly blends history with a vibrant modern spirit. From exploring a sea-bound fortress to soaking in the atmosphere of its central square, every moment felt like stepping further into a captivating story. The Greek sun shone warmly, making the ancient stones glow with a golden hue, and the gentle sea breeze carried whispers of centuries past.



My day began with a delightful breakfast at The George. I savored some Greek yogurt with local honey, a simple yet perfect start to fuel my explorations. It reminded me of the small, family-run businesses back in Amherst, where quality and tradition always came first.



My first stop was the iconic Bourtzi Fortress. Getting there involved a short boat trip from the harbor, which offered stunning panoramic views of Nafplio. The water sparkled under the morning sun, and the air was filled with the salty scent of the sea. As the boat approached the fortress, its imposing structure rose from the water, a testament to centuries of history. I learned that the fortress was built in 1473 by the Venetians, designed by the Italian architect Antonio Gambello, to protect the city from pirates and sea invasions. The fortress has served many purposes over the years, including a prison, a hotel, and even a residence for the town executioner! It's amazing to think of all the stories those ancient stones could tell.

Exploring the fortress was like stepping back in time. I wandered through its three floors, connected by winding staircases, and imagined what life must have been like for the soldiers who once stood guard here. The fortress has undergone extensive repairs and restoration and only recently reopened to the public. I could see why it's such a popular spot for tourists – it’s a beautiful and peaceful escape from the busy city life.

After returning to the mainland, I made my way to Syntagma Square, the heart of Nafplio. I paused for a moment to admire the architecture, a blend of Venetian, Ottoman, and Neoclassical styles, each building telling its own story.

I decided to have lunch at To Omorfo Tavernaki. The restaurant had a cozy and welcoming atmosphere, with a charming outdoor seating area. I ordered a selection of traditional Greek mezes, including tzatziki, dolmades, and saganaki. The food was fresh and delicious, bursting with the flavors of the Mediterranean. The service was excellent, the staff making me feel right at home. It was a perfect spot to relax and soak in the atmosphere of the square.

As I sat there, enjoying my lunch, I couldn't help but feel a sense of connection to this place. Maybe it's the linguist in me, but it was easy to imagine all the people who had passed through this square over the centuries, each leaving their mark on its history. After lunch, I took some time to simply wander through the streets of Nafplio, getting lost in its labyrinthine alleys and discovering hidden gems around every corner. It was a feast for the senses, each sight, sound, and smell adding to the rich tapestry of this vibrant town.



Before dinner, I decided to visit Alkioni Wine Bar & Cellar. I wanted to try some local wines, and this place came highly recommended. The wine bar had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, with shelves lined with bottles from all over Greece. The staff were incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about wine, guiding me through a tasting of several different varieties. I learned about the unique terroir of the region and the different winemaking techniques used by local producers. It was a fascinating experience, and I left with a newfound appreciation for Greek wine.

For dinner, I chose Savouras restaurant. Located right on the waterfront, it offered stunning views of the harbor. The seafood was incredibly fresh and flavorful, a testament to the restaurant's commitment to using local ingredients.

As I enjoyed my dinner, I watched the sun set over the harbor, painting the sky in hues of orange, pink, and purple. The lights of Nafplio twinkled on, creating a magical atmosphere. It was a perfect end to a perfect day.



Looking ahead to tomorrow, I plan to explore the Arvanitia Walking Area and the Church of Saint Spyridon. I am also hoping to find some time to visit the Nafplia Bookstore. I’ve heard it’s a great place to find unique souvenirs and learn more about the local culture.



As I walked back to my hotel, Amymone and Adiandi, I felt a sense of contentment wash over me. Nafplio had captured my heart, its beauty, history, and vibrant culture leaving an indelible mark on my soul. I knew that this was a place I would never forget, a place I would always cherish.
