Exploring the Historic Charms of Nafplio, Greece
Day 6: Echoes of the Ancients: Discovering the Magic of Epidaurus
Step back in time and experience the wonder of Epidaurus, where ancient healing and dramatic arts come to life in Greece.
Whispers of Healing and Drama
Today's journey was a profound immersion into the heart of ancient Greece, a day spent tracing the footsteps of pilgrims and performers in Epidaurus. It's remarkable how these ancient sites continue to resonate with stories of healing, art, and human ingenuity. I felt a deep connection to the past, a sense of awe that I know will stay with me long after I leave Greece.
My day began with a delightful breakfast at Il Porto in Nafplio. The fresh air and gentle harbor breeze were the perfect start to what promised to be an inspiring day. After a quick bite, I set off towards Epidaurus. The drive itself was beautiful, with the landscape unfolding into a tapestry of olive groves and rolling hills.
My first stop was the famed sanctuary of Epidaurus. In ancient times, this was a sacred place dedicated to Asclepius, the god of healing. The Asklepieion of Epidaurus was not merely a temple; it was a complex that included dormitories, baths, and a stadium, all designed to cater to the physical and spiritual well-being of its visitors. Pilgrims from across the Mediterranean came seeking cures for their ailments, hoping for divine intervention or the skilled treatments of the resident priests.
Wandering through the ruins, I tried to imagine the scene centuries ago: the hopeful faces, the scent of herbs, and the hushed whispers of prayers. It’s fascinating how the ancient Greeks intertwined physical and spiritual healing, recognizing the importance of both in achieving overall wellness. The physicians here were incredibly wise, emphasizing natural treatments and well-organized medical procedures.
The past is never dead. It's not even past.
Next, I made my way to the crown jewel of Epidaurus: the Ancient Theatre at the Asklepieion of Epidaurus. It’s not just its stunning preservation that impresses, but also its legendary acoustics. Built in the late 4th century BC by the architect Polykleitos the Younger, the theatre was designed to host musical contests, dramatic performances, and ceremonies honoring Asclepius. With a capacity of around 14,000 spectators, it's a testament to the importance of the performing arts in ancient Greek society. It was believed that attending these performances had positive effects on mental and physical health.

I had to test the acoustics for myself, of course. Standing in the center of the orchestra, I spoke in a normal voice, and it was incredible to hear how clearly the sound carried to the highest rows. It’s no wonder that the theatre is still used today for performances during the summer festival. The acoustics are so perfect that even the slightest sound can be heard with astonishing clarity by every spectator.
The secret to the theatre’s exceptional acoustics lies in its design and the materials used. The limestone seats filter out background noise and reflect high frequencies back towards the audience, ensuring that every word and note is heard with perfect clarity. It's a marvel of ancient engineering and a testament to the Greeks' deep understanding of acoustics.
After soaking in the atmosphere of the theatre, I headed to Kellari Nafplion Restaurant for a leisurely lunch. I savored traditional Greek dishes, reflecting on the morning's experiences. I thought about Jean-Pierre and how much he would have appreciated the history and architecture of Epidaurus. I made a mental note to bring him here someday.
In the late afternoon, I returned to Nafplio and decided to explore the local café scene. I found myself at ROSSO music cafe | wine bar, a charming spot known for its stylish décor and vibrant atmosphere. It was the perfect place to unwind with a glass of local wine and reflect on the day. The café was buzzing with locals and tourists, creating a lively and welcoming ambiance. I enjoyed listening to the modern tunes and watching people as the sun began to set.
For dinner, I chose Teory, a restaurant known for its innovative cuisine and cozy ambiance. I indulged in a delicious meal, savoring the flavors of the Mediterranean. It was the perfect end to a day filled with history, culture, and culinary delights. As I savored each bite, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience the magic of Nafplio and Epidaurus.
As I walked back to Amymone and Adiandi, the stars were beginning to appear, casting a soft glow over the town. The air was filled with the sounds of laughter and music, creating a sense of warmth and community. I felt a deep sense of contentment, knowing that I had made the most of my day in Epidaurus.

Tomorrow, I plan to venture to Ancient Corinth and Acrocorinth. I'm excited to explore more of the Peloponnese and uncover the hidden gems of this beautiful region. I've heard that the Archaeological Museum of Ancient Corinth is a must-see, and I'm eager to learn more about the history of this ancient city. I’m also looking forward to visiting Acrocorinth, the ancient citadel that offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. And of course, I will make sure to try out the local cuisine at The Corner of Kavalaris for lunch and Amimoni Restaurant at Nafplia Palace for dinner. I might even do some shopping at Papailiou - The fashion store.
But for now, I'm content to relax and reflect on the day. Epidaurus has left an indelible mark on my soul, a reminder of the power of healing, art, and human connection. It's a place where the echoes of the ancients still resonate, inviting us to listen and learn from the past. I am also reminded that I forgot to pack a Greek phrasebook. I will try to find one tomorrow while I am out and about.
The Athens Epidaurus Festival is coming up in June and July. I wonder if I can extend my trip to attend some of the performances.
I am also curious about the sunken city of Epidaurus. I will have to look into it.
I also found out that the municipality of Epidaurus has two modern towns called Palaia Epidavros and Nea Epidavros.
I am very grateful that I was able to visit Epidaurus. It is a wonderful place.
