Whispers of the Past, Splashes of the Present

Today was a beautiful blend of ancient history and seaside relaxation. It's amazing how much history is packed into this region of Greece. From exploring the ruins of a Mycenaean acropolis to feeling the sand between my toes at a local beach, it was a day that truly captured the spirit of Nafplio. I love how each day here brings a new perspective and a deeper connection to this fascinating place.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at La Gratella. I decided to try it based on the many recommendations I had seen, and I wasn't disappointed. It was a delightful start to the day, setting the stage for adventure. I savored a wonderful Italian breakfast – a delightful change of pace that fueled me up for the day’s explorations. The charming atmosphere and friendly service made it a perfect start.

After breakfast, I set off to explore the Mycenaean Acropolis of Tiryns. As I approached, the sheer scale of the Cyclopean walls was awe-inspiring. It's incredible to think that these massive stones were put in place thousands of years ago. I spent a couple of hours wandering through the ruins, imagining what life must have been like during the Mycenaean era. The site is steeped in history, with each stone whispering tales of ancient kings and mythical heroes. The panoramic views from the acropolis were breathtaking, offering a glimpse into the strategic importance of this ancient fortress.

Tiryns, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is said to have been the home of Hercules during his labors. Walking through the ruins, I couldn't help but feel a connection to the past. The walls, built around 1300 BC, are a testament to the ingenuity and skill of the Mycenaean people. It's fascinating to learn that the site has been inhabited since the Neolithic age, with its heyday occurring between 1400 and 1200 BC. I learned that, according to myth, Tiryns was founded by Prince Proetus of Argos, aided by Cyclops who built the walls. The site was continuously inhabited until the Argeians destroyed it in the 5th century BC, exiling its inhabitants.

After immersing myself in ancient history, I decided it was time for a change of pace. I headed to Myli Beach, a local favorite known for its relaxing atmosphere. The drive there was lovely, with scenic views of the Argolic countryside. Myli Beach is located near Argos and is known for its cool atmosphere and beautiful views, making it a great family destination. The beach isn’t too large, which gives it a cozy feel, and it offers amenities like beach umbrellas and showers. I spent the afternoon lounging on the sand, soaking up the sun, and enjoying the refreshing sea breeze. The water was crystal clear, perfect for a swim. I even tried my hand at a bit of beachcombing, finding some beautiful seashells to add to my collection.

It was the perfect way to unwind after a morning of historical exploration. The beach was relatively quiet, which I appreciated. I could hear the gentle lapping of the waves and the occasional laughter of families enjoying their day. It was a peaceful escape, and I felt completely rejuvenated.

In the late afternoon, I returned to Nafplio and decided to do some shopping. I had heard about Armiriki, a local shop known for its unique, artist-designed t-shirts and canvas bags. The shop also serves as a mini-museum, showcasing the textile history of the region. I found a beautiful t-shirt with a Greek-inspired design, a perfect souvenir to remind me of my time here. I chatted with Nectaria, who was full of local tips and provided me with a free map of Nafplio Old Town, marking 14 historic points of interest.

Before dinner, I took a leisurely stroll through the town, soaking in the atmosphere. Nafplio is such a charming place, with its narrow streets, colorful buildings, and stunning sea views. I stopped at a local café for a freddo espresso, a Greek coffee specialty that I’ve quickly become addicted to. It's the perfect pick-me-up for a warm afternoon. The town was bustling with activity, locals and tourists alike enjoying the beautiful weather and vibrant atmosphere. I loved the mix of old and new, the ancient ruins blending seamlessly with modern life.

For dinner, I chose Mezedes Tavern Noulis, a family-run restaurant known for its traditional Greek meze dishes. It was an excellent choice. The chef, Noulis Andrianopoulos, prepares fresh and tasty options such as fried meatballs and rooster in red wine sauce with Greek pasta. I decided to try several mezedes, including the flambeed saganaki cheese, which was prepared right at my table – a delightful culinary experience. The cozy taverna, with its friendly staff, made me feel right at home.

As the sun began to set, I made my way to Yacht Nafplio Restaurant for a late dinner. This restaurant has mixed reviews, but I was curious to try it for myself. I had an amazing experience. The service was impeccable, and the cocktails were delicious. I tried one of their house cocktails, the Mary Rose, which the waitress took the time to explain. For dinner, I opted for fresh seafood, which was cooked to perfection. The restaurant had a lively atmosphere, and I enjoyed watching the boats bobbing in the harbor.

I’m also looking forward to enjoying breakfast at Il Porto, lunch at Kellari Nafplion Restaurant, and dinner at Teory.
