A Day of Ancient Echoes and Rich Flavors
Today was a journey back in time, interwoven with the delightful tastes of the present. Leaving Nafplio behind for a day trip to Nemea, I was eager to explore the region's ancient history and its renowned wines. It was a day of discovery, one that reminded me why I love traveling – the blend of learning, experiencing, and savoring the unique character of a place.
The morning started with a hearty breakfast at The Nest in Nafplio. It's such a cozy spot, and their Greek yogurt with honey and walnuts gave me the perfect energy boost for the day ahead. With the sun shining brightly, I set off towards Nemea, a drive that took me through rolling hills dotted with olive groves and vineyards. It's always a treat to escape the city and immerse myself in the serene beauty of the Greek countryside.
My first stop was the Archaeological Museum of Nemea. It's a well-curated museum that houses artifacts unearthed from the nearby archaeological site. The museum itself was constructed by the University of California and given to the Greek State in 1984. As I wandered through the exhibits, I was struck by the rich history of this region, once home to the Nemean Games, an important athletic and religious festival in ancient Greece. The museum's collection includes pottery, sculptures, and everyday objects that offer a glimpse into the lives of the people who once inhabited this land. I spent a couple of hours here, soaking in the stories of the past and marveling at the craftsmanship of ancient artisans.

The past is never dead. It's not even past.
After the museum, I ventured to the Cooperative Winery of Nemea. Nemea is known as one of the most important wine-producing regions in Greece, famous for its Agiorgitiko wines. The Cooperative Winery is one of the largest producers in the region, with over 500 members cultivating this famous variety. I opted for a wine tasting, eager to sample the local flavors. The sommelier was incredibly knowledgeable, guiding me through the nuances of each wine. I learned about the unique characteristics of Agiorgitiko, its fruity aromas, and its smooth, velvety texture. It was fascinating to hear about the winemaking process, from the grape harvest to the aging in oak barrels. Of course, I couldn't resist purchasing a bottle (or two!) to take back to Lyon for Jean-Pierre and me to enjoy. I can already picture us savoring it on our balcony, reminiscing about my Greek adventure.

Lunch was at Karamalis Tavern back in Nemea, a charming spot known for its authentic Greek cuisine. The restaurant is near the entrance of Nafplio, which made it easy to find. I decided to try their moussaka, a classic Greek dish of layered eggplant, meat sauce, and béchamel. It was absolutely divine, rich and flavorful, and the perfect comfort food after a morning of exploration. The tavern had a relaxed atmosphere, and the staff was incredibly friendly, making me feel right at home.

In the late afternoon, I returned to Nafplio and made a stop at Greek Aether, a local shop in the old town. I had read about it and was curious to see what it offered. It's a charming little store that sells modern products made by Greek creators and artists. I found a beautiful handcrafted necklace, a perfect souvenir to remind me of my time in Nafplio. Elizabeth, the owner, was lovely and shared her passion for supporting local artisans. It's always a joy to discover unique, locally made treasures.

For dinner, I decided to try Kakanarakis 1986, a restaurant that had been recommended to me by several locals. It's located in one of the beautiful alleyways of the old city and has an elegant yet cozy atmosphere. The restaurant has been operating since 1986, starting as a traditional taverna and evolving into a Mediterranean cuisine haven. I started with a traditional Greek salad, the tomatoes bursting with flavor, followed by the handmade burger, which I was told was a must-try. I opted for the beef burger, and it was indeed exceptional, juicy and perfectly seasoned. The restaurant also had an impressive wine list, featuring local labels from the Nemea region. I chose a glass of Agiorgitiko to complement my meal, and it was a perfect pairing. The prices were also very reasonable. The service was attentive and friendly, making for a memorable dining experience.

As I walked back to Amymone and Adiandi, the streets of Nafplio were alive with activity. Families strolled along the waterfront, couples dined at outdoor cafes, and the air was filled with the sounds of laughter and music. I paused for a moment to take it all in, feeling grateful for another day of discovery and adventure. Tomorrow, I'm planning to visit the Archaeological Site of Mycenae and the Treasury of Atreus. I'm also looking forward to trying Madrigali for breakfast, To Teloneio for lunch, and 3SIXTY Grill Dining | Wine Bar for dinner. And perhaps, I'll end the day with a drink at MENTΩR bar & grill.

Back at the hotel, I made sure to recharge my portable phone charger, remembering how I'd forgotten it earlier in the trip. I also spent some time reviewing my Greek phrasebook, hoping to improve my language skills. It's the little things that make a big difference when traveling. As I drift off to sleep, I'm already dreaming of tomorrow's adventures, eager to uncover more of the secrets that Nafplio and its surroundings hold.
