Today was a day for the history books, quite literally! I ventured into the heart of Mycenaean civilization, a place where legends were born and empires rose. I'm still reeling from the sheer magnitude of the ancient stories that seem to whisper on the wind here. It's a powerful experience, one that makes you feel incredibly small yet connected to something timeless.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Madrigali. I enjoyed a traditional Greek yogurt with honey and walnuts, which gave me the perfect energy boost for a day of exploring ancient ruins. The café was charming, with a lovely view of the city waking up. It’s amazing how a simple breakfast can set the tone for an entire day of adventure. Fuelled and ready, I set off towards Mycenae. The drive itself was beautiful, winding through the Argolid countryside with its olive groves and citrus trees. The landscape felt ancient, as if the very earth held secrets from millennia ago. I could almost imagine chariots racing across the plains, and the anticipation grew with every kilometer.

Arriving at the Archaeological Site of Mycenae was like stepping into another world. The sheer scale of the Cyclopean walls is breathtaking. It's hard to fathom how these massive stones were put in place so many centuries ago. The Lion Gate, with its imposing sculpture, stands as a testament to the power and artistry of the Mycenaean civilization. I spent hours wandering through the ruins, trying to piece together the story of this once-great city. I imagined Agamemnon returning victorious from Troy, Clytemnestra plotting her revenge, and the echoes of a civilization that shaped so much of Western culture.

The sheer scale of the structure is incredible, and the acoustics inside are remarkable. Standing in the center of the tomb, I felt a sense of reverence and wonder. It's a place that invites contemplation and reflection on the passage of time and the enduring legacy of human achievement. The Treasury of Atreus lies approximately 400 m southwest of the acropolis of Mycenae, at the east slope of the verdant Panagitsa Hill, and hosted living complexes during the Mycenaean years. According to the graffiti, the epistyle seems to have been collected by a priest in 1758, upon his arrival in the local parish.

I also spent some time at the Archaeological Museum of Mycenae, which is located within the archaeological site. The museum houses a fascinating collection of artifacts from the site, including pottery, jewelry, and weapons. Seeing these objects up close helped me to connect with the daily life of the Mycenaeans and to appreciate their artistic and technological achievements. It really brings the stories to life, seeing the actual objects they used so long ago.

For lunch, I headed back towards Nafplio and stopped at To Teloneio, a restaurant I had read about. It was a delightful experience. I savored fresh seafood, grilled to perfection, while enjoying the sea breeze and the lively atmosphere of the waterfront. The staff was friendly and welcoming, and the food was simply delicious. I can see why it’s so popular with locals and tourists alike.

In the late afternoon, I treated myself to a refreshing drink at MENTΩR bar & grill. It was the perfect spot to unwind after a long day of exploring. It was a moment of pure bliss.

Before heading back to my hotel, I took a leisurely stroll through the streets of Nafplio. The town was alive with activity, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. I stopped to admire the architecture, to listen to the music spilling out from the tavernas, and to soak up the vibrant energy of this charming town.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Kapsia Cave and visit Lafkiotis S.A. I'm excited to see what new adventures await me!

As I sit here now, writing in my travel journal, I can't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience such incredible places. Mycenae is a place that will stay with me forever, a reminder of the power of the past and the enduring spirit of human civilization. Tonight, as I drift off to sleep, I'll be dreaming of ancient kings, heroic warriors, and the timeless beauty of Greece. It's nights like these that make me so happy I decided to embark on this solo adventure. Lyon may be my home now, but Greece is quickly becoming a part of my heart. And who knows, maybe Jean-Pierre will join me on my next adventure!

I did, however, forget my portable phone charger, which made for a stressful afternoon as my phone battery dwindled. Lesson learned!
