A Day of Icelandic Delights

Today was nothing short of spectacular, a true immersion into the raw beauty and geothermal heart of the Myvatn Region. Jean-Pierre and I set out early, eager to explore the natural wonders that awaited us. It's days like these that remind me why I fell in love with travel blogging in the first place – the sheer joy of discovery and the chance to share these experiences with all of you.

Our first stop was Selfoss, a majestic waterfall that I had been eagerly anticipating. After a hearty breakfast at Kvika Kaffi located within the Mývatn Nature Baths, we drove towards Dettifoss, knowing Selfoss was just a short hike away. The drive itself was stunning, with the stark Icelandic landscape stretching out before us. I couldn’t help but think how different this was from Lyon, with its charming cityscapes and bustling markets. While I adore my life in France, there’s something about the untamed wilderness of Iceland that calls to my soul. Finding our way to Selfoss was straightforward, thanks to the well-marked roads. We parked near Dettifoss and took the eastward trail, which offered a scenic route to Selfoss.

The hike was relatively easy, about a kilometer, and the anticipation grew with every step. As we rounded a bend, the magnificent Selfoss came into view. Unlike Dettifoss, which is known for its sheer power, Selfoss has a more elegant, almost ethereal quality. The water cascades down in multiple streams, creating a mesmerizing horseshoe shape. The misty spray enveloped us, and I could feel the cool, crisp air on my face. Jean-Pierre, ever the photographer, was in his element, snapping away at every angle. I, on the other hand, simply stood there, soaking it all in. There’s something incredibly humbling about standing in the presence of such natural beauty. The power of the water, the rugged landscape, it all combines to create a moment of pure awe. It’s moments like these that I wish I could capture in a photograph and send to my parents back in Amherst – they would absolutely love this. I made a mental note to find a postcard at the next gift shop. We spent a good hour exploring the area around Selfoss, taking in the views from different vantage points. The sun peeked through the clouds, casting a golden light on the falls, making the scene even more magical. Before leaving Selfoss, I took a moment to simply be present, to feel the energy of this place, and to commit it to memory. It’s a memory I know I will cherish for years to come.

Next on our itinerary was the Lake Mývatn panoramic point. As we drove from Selfoss, the landscape transformed once again. The rugged, rocky terrain gave way to the serene beauty of Lake Mývatn. The lake itself is a marvel, dotted with countless small islands and surrounded by lush greenery. The panoramic point offered a stunning vista of the entire area. From there, we could see the lake stretching out before us, the various volcanic formations in the distance, and the vast expanse of the Icelandic sky. It was the perfect spot to simply pause and take in the grandeur of nature. I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to witness such beauty. Jean-Pierre and I spent some time identifying the various landmarks and discussing the geological history of the area. It’s fascinating to think about the volcanic activity that shaped this landscape thousands of years ago.

Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.

After soaking in the panoramic views, we made our way to the Mývatn Geothermal Area. This area is a testament to Iceland’s incredible geothermal activity. As we approached, the air filled with the distinct smell of sulfur, a telltale sign of the volcanic forces at work beneath the surface. We parked the car and ventured out into the otherworldly landscape. The ground was a kaleidoscope of colors – bright yellows, oranges, and reds, all caused by the various minerals in the soil. Steam vents hissed and bubbled, and mud pots gurgled ominously. It felt like we had stepped onto another planet. We explored the area on foot, carefully following the marked paths. The heat radiating from the ground was intense, and I could feel it even through my hiking boots. It was a stark reminder of the power and volatility of nature. Despite the somewhat harsh conditions, there was a strange beauty to the geothermal area. The stark, barren landscape, the vibrant colors, and the constant activity of the earth combined to create a truly unique and unforgettable experience. It was a far cry from the manicured parks and gardens of Lyon, but I found it equally captivating. I couldn’t help but think about the sustainable living practices I’ve been reading about lately. Iceland’s reliance on geothermal energy is a testament to the potential of harnessing natural resources in an environmentally friendly way. It’s something I would love to explore further in future blog posts.

After a day of exploring Iceland’s natural wonders, we were both ready for a relaxing soak. So, we headed to the Mývatn Nature Baths. This geothermal spa is often referred to as the “Blue Lagoon of the North,” and it certainly lived up to its reputation. The warm, mineral-rich waters were incredibly soothing, and the views of the surrounding landscape were simply breathtaking. We spent several hours soaking in the baths, chatting with other travelers, and simply enjoying the tranquility of the moment. There’s something incredibly special about being surrounded by nature while immersed in warm, healing waters. It’s a sensory experience that is both relaxing and invigorating. Plus, there was a swim-up bar! Jean-Pierre and I enjoyed a couple of drinks while we soaked, laughing and reminiscing about our adventures throughout the day. I even braved the steam baths, which were intensely hot but incredibly refreshing.

For dinner, we decided to try Gamli Bærinn, a charming restaurant known for its traditional Icelandic cuisine. The restaurant had a cozy, rustic atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly welcoming. We ordered the lamb soup and a local beer, both of which were absolutely delicious. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day. As we sat there, enjoying our meal, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of contentment. We had experienced so much in just one day, from the majestic Selfoss waterfall to the otherworldly Mývatn Geothermal Area and the relaxing Mývatn Nature Baths. It was a day filled with natural beauty, adventure, and relaxation. These are the moments that make travel so rewarding. I glanced over at Jean-Pierre, who was smiling contentedly, and I knew that he felt the same way. Tomorrow, I said, we explore Skútustaðir and The Fly Lands! He grinned, ever the eager explorer.

As I write this, back at our cozy guesthouse, I’m already looking forward to tomorrow’s adventures. We plan to visit Skútastaðir, The Fly Lands, and the Mývatn Research Station. I’m particularly excited about exploring the pseudocraters at Skútustaðir and learning more about the local ecosystem at the research station. Before drifting off to sleep, I made sure to charge my camera and double-check our route for tomorrow. I also made a mental note to buy some sunglasses – I completely forgot them in Lyon, and the Icelandic sun can be surprisingly intense. As I close my eyes, I’m filled with gratitude for this incredible journey and for the opportunity to share it with all of you. Stay tuned for more adventures from the Myvatn Region!

Oh, and I'm definitely going to try the Fish and Chips at Lake Mývatn before we leave the area!
