Saying Goodbye to Sintra: A Day of Dramatic Views and Ancient Echoes
As our Sintra adventure draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible blend of history, nature, and culinary delights we've experienced. Today was a perfect culmination of everything that makes this region so special, filled with breathtaking vistas and fascinating historical insights. I'm excited to share the final chapter of our journey with you.
Our last day in Sintra began with a delightful breakfast at Paço Real. The hotel offered a charming and intimate setting, perfect for savoring a traditional Portuguese breakfast. Jean-Pierre and I enjoyed the fresh pastries and strong coffee, fueling up for a day of exploration. It was a lovely start, setting the tone for the adventures ahead. After breakfast, we checked out of Sintra Marmoris Camélia, feeling grateful for the comfortable stay and the hotel's convenient location. It had been the perfect base for our Sintra explorations.

First on our itinerary was a visit to Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of continental Europe. The drive there was scenic, winding through rolling hills and offering glimpses of the Atlantic. As we approached the coast, the landscape transformed into dramatic cliffs and rugged terrain. The wind was strong, carrying the salty scent of the ocean. Standing at Cabo da Roca, with the vast expanse of the Atlantic stretching out before us, was truly awe-inspiring. The powerful waves crashing against the rocks below created a mesmerizing spectacle. We took some photos, trying to capture the raw beauty of the place, but no image could truly do it justice. It was a moment of pure, unadulterated connection with nature.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are those that remind us of our place in the vastness of the world.
Next, we ventured to Castelo dos Mouros, the Moorish Castle. Perched high on a hilltop, the castle offered panoramic views of Sintra and the surrounding landscape. The history of the castle is fascinating, dating back to the 8th and 9th centuries when the Moors ruled this region. Walking along the ancient walls, Jean-Pierre and I imagined what life must have been like centuries ago. The castle's strategic location was evident, providing a commanding view of the coastline and surrounding hills. We explored the ruins, climbing the towers and taking in the breathtaking scenery. The castle's architecture, a blend of Moorish and Christian influences, was a testament to the region's rich and complex history. The views from the top were simply stunning, stretching as far as the eye could see.

After immersing ourselves in history, we drove to Parque Natural da Arrábida. The drive itself was a treat, with winding roads offering stunning views of the coastline and the lush greenery of the park. The landscape was a mix of rugged cliffs, sandy beaches, and dense forests. We decided to take a short hike, following one of the many trails that crisscross the park. The air was fresh and clean, filled with the scent of pine and wildflowers. As we walked, we marveled at the natural beauty surrounding us. The park is known for its diverse flora and fauna, and we spotted several species of birds and plants that were new to us. The views from the clifftops were spectacular, with the turquoise waters of the Atlantic stretching out below. It was a perfect way to end our day, connecting with nature and enjoying the tranquility of the park.
