A Lisbon Daydream

Today was a whirlwind of Lisbon's best, a city that effortlessly blends history with vibrant modern life. Jean-Pierre and I dove headfirst into its enchanting streets, eager to soak up every sight, sound, and flavor. It's days like these that remind me why I love travel so much – the unexpected discoveries, the shared moments, and the sheer joy of experiencing something new together.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Monserrate back in Sintra. I savored a strong coffee and a pastel de nata, the perfect fuel for our Lisbon adventure. The restaurant was lovely, the perfect way to start the day before we set off.

Our first stop was Lisboa Autêntica, where we met our guide for a walking tour. I was excited to explore the city's hidden corners and learn about its rich history, and I was not disappointed. The tour was a fantastic introduction to Lisbon's culture and heritage. The guide was incredibly knowledgeable, sharing fascinating stories and anecdotes that brought the city to life. Jean-Pierre, with his keen interest in history, was particularly captivated, peppering the guide with questions about everything from the city's Roman origins to its role in the Age of Discovery. I loved wandering through the narrow, winding streets, admiring the colorful buildings and soaking in the lively atmosphere. I even practiced my Portuguese with some of the locals, much to Jean-Pierre's amusement. We learned about the city's unique neighborhoods, each with its own distinct character and charm.

Next on our list was the Jerónimos Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site that left me speechless. The sheer scale and intricate detail of the architecture were breathtaking. Built in the 1500s, the monastery is a stunning example of Manueline architecture, a uniquely Portuguese style that incorporates maritime motifs and symbols of the Age of Discovery. Jean-Pierre and I wandered through the cloisters, marveling at the delicate carvings and the play of light and shadow. We paid our respects at the tombs of Vasco da Gama and Luís de Camões, two of Portugal's most celebrated figures. The monastery's history is as rich and fascinating as its architecture. It was originally built to commemorate Vasco da Gama's voyage to India and to provide spiritual guidance to sailors embarking on their own voyages of exploration. The monks who lived in the monastery were also responsible for creating the original recipe for the famous Portuguese custard tart, the pastel de nata! I made a mental note to try one (or two) before we left Lisbon.

After the monastery, we headed to the Belém Tower, another iconic Lisbon landmark. This 16th-century fortress stands proudly on the banks of the Tagus River, a testament to Portugal's maritime power. We climbed to the top of the tower, enjoying panoramic views of the river and the city. The tower's history is as fascinating as its architecture. It served as a point of embarkation and disembarkation for Portuguese explorers and as a ceremonial gateway to Lisbon. Over the years, it has also been used as a customs port, a telegraph station, and even a lighthouse. Standing on the top of the tower, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and wonder at the courage and determination of the Portuguese explorers who set sail from here centuries ago.

Before leaving Lisbon, we did some shopping at Casa Vidi. I bought a few small gifts for friends and family, and Jean-Pierre found a beautiful tile with a traditional Portuguese design. It was the perfect memento of our day in Lisbon. I was able to find some lovely, handcrafted jewelry, and Jean-Pierre was thrilled with his ceramic tile. I love finding unique souvenirs that remind me of our travels, and Casa Vidi had so many wonderful options. It's a great place to find authentic Portuguese crafts and support local artisans.

For lunch, we ventured back towards Sintra and dined at Curral dos Caprinos. The restaurant was rustic and charming, with a menu full of traditional Portuguese dishes. We shared a hearty stew and some grilled fish, savoring the flavors of the region. Jean-Pierre declared it one of the best meals he'd had on the trip so far. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a warm, family-friendly atmosphere. The staff were incredibly welcoming, making us feel right at home. It was a perfect place to relax and refuel after a busy day of sightseeing.

Tonight, we celebrated our Lisbon adventure with dinner at Tacho Real. The restaurant was elegant and refined, with a menu that showcased the best of Portuguese cuisine. I ordered the seafood rice, while Jean-Pierre opted for the grilled cod. Both dishes were exquisite, a fitting end to a perfect day. The restaurant was beautifully decorated, with soft lighting and a romantic ambiance. The service was impeccable, and the staff were attentive and knowledgeable. It was a truly special dining experience.

As I reflect on our day, I'm filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and culture of Lisbon. It's a city that has captured my heart, and I know I'll be back again someday. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings, as we explore The Westernmost Point of Continental Europe, Castelo dos Mouros, and Parque Natural da Arrábida. I am particularly excited about visiting Castelo dos Mouros, as I have always been fascinated by Moorish history and architecture.

And of course, I am looking forward to trying out Salla de Estar! It sounds like the perfect place to unwind and enjoy a drink after a long day of exploring. I am also curious to see Parque Natural da Arrábida, as I have heard that it is a beautiful and unspoiled natural area.

Tomorrow marks the final day of our trip, and while I'm sad to see it end, I'm also excited to make the most of our last day in Portugal. We'll be heading to the westernmost point of continental Europe, Castelo dos Mouros, and Parque Natural da Arrábida. I'm sure it will be another day filled with unforgettable experiences.
