Kyoto's Timeless Charms

Today was a deep dive into the heart of Kyoto, a day where ancient temples whispered stories of the past and the vibrant streets buzzed with the energy of the present. It was a journey of serenity and discovery, a reminder of why I embarked on this solo adventure in the first place. The crisp March air, with just a hint of spring, made every step a refreshing experience, and I couldn't wait to share it all.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Goichi Pizza. I know, pizza in Japan? But I had read great things about it, and I was not disappointed. A fusion of Italian and Japanese flavors, it was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring. I savored every bite, knowing the adventures that awaited me. After breakfast, I made my way towards the first destination of the day: the famed Kiyomizu-dera Temple.

The approach to Kiyomizu-dera was an experience in itself. The narrow streets leading up to the temple were lined with shops selling everything from traditional sweets to intricate crafts. The energy was palpable, a mix of locals and tourists all drawn to the same destination. I couldn't resist stopping to admire the colorful displays, picking up a few small souvenirs for Aisha and Hans back home. It's these little things that make me feel connected to them, even when I'm miles away.

Finally, I reached the entrance to Kiyomizu-dera. The temple, perched on the hillside, offered a breathtaking view of Kyoto. The iconic wooden stage jutted out, seemingly suspended in mid-air. I paused for a moment, taking in the panoramic vista. The city stretched out before me, a tapestry of rooftops and gardens, framed by the distant mountains. It was a sight that truly captured the essence of Kyoto.

Exploring Kiyomizu-dera was like stepping back in time. The temple, founded in 778, has a rich history, having been destroyed by fire multiple times and rebuilt by the faithful. The current buildings date back to 1633, testaments to the enduring spirit of Japanese craftsmanship. I wandered through the halls, admiring the intricate details of the architecture and the serene beauty of the Buddhist statues. The temple's name, meaning pure water temple, comes from the Otowa Waterfall, located within the complex. The water flows through three channels, and visitors can drink from them, each stream believed to grant different benefits: longevity, success in studies, and a fortunate love life. I chose the stream for longevity, hoping for many more years of travel and adventure.

The beauty of Kiyomizu-dera lies not only in its stunning architecture and panoramic views, but also in its ability to transport you to another time, a place of peace and reflection.

After Kiyomizu-dera, I strolled towards Yasaka Shrine, another of Kyoto's iconic landmarks. The shrine, also known as Gion Shrine, is located at the eastern end of Shijo-dori, right in the heart of the Gion district. As I approached, the vibrant vermilion gate stood out against the backdrop of the city. Yasaka Shrine has a history stretching back over 1350 years, initially serving travelers and pilgrims. It enshrines Susanoo-no-Mikoto, a god of storms and sea in Japanese mythology, along with his wife and children.

The shrine was bustling with activity. Locals and tourists alike were offering prayers, writing wishes on ema (wooden plaques), and enjoying the lively atmosphere. I watched as a group of children played near the main hall, their laughter echoing through the grounds. It was a scene that spoke to the enduring spirit of community and tradition in Kyoto. I took a moment to offer my own prayer, wishing for health and happiness for my family and for safe travels in the days to come.

By now, I was starting to feel a bit peckish, so I decided to head to Oryori Menami for lunch. Tucked away in a quiet corner of Gion, this restaurant offered a traditional Kyoto dining experience. I opted for a set menu that included a variety of local specialties, from delicate sashimi to savory tempura. It was a feast for the senses, each dish a work of art in its own right. As I savored the flavors, I reflected on the morning's adventures. The temples, the shrines, the bustling streets – it was all a sensory overload in the best possible way.

With my stomach full and my spirits high, I ventured into Gion, Kyoto's famed geisha district. The area is known for its preserved wooden machiya townhouses and narrow streets, creating a timeless ambiance. As I wandered through the streets, I felt like I had stepped into a movie set. The traditional architecture, the soft glow of the lanterns, the occasional glimpse of a geiko hurrying to an appointment – it was all incredibly enchanting.

I explored Hanamikoji Street, the most famous street in Gion, lined with traditional teahouses and restaurants. Though I didn't spot any geiko, the atmosphere alone was worth the visit. I imagined what it must have been like in the Edo period, when Gion was at the height of its glory, a center of entertainment and cultural exchange. I stopped by Gion Corner, a cultural theater that offers a condensed introduction to various Japanese performing arts. Though I didn't have time to catch a show, I made a mental note to come back on a future visit.

As the sun began to set, I made my way to French Dining Top of Kyoto for dinner. Located atop the Kyoto Hotel Okura, this restaurant offered stunning panoramic views of the city. The food was exquisite, a fusion of French techniques and Japanese ingredients. I savored every bite, knowing that this was a meal I would remember for a long time. The sparkling lights of the city below created a magical backdrop, making the experience all the more special.

After dinner, I decided to check out The Common One Bar Kyoto. It was the perfect way to wind down after a long day of exploring. The bar had a cozy atmosphere, with soft lighting and comfortable seating. I ordered a local craft beer and struck up a conversation with the bartender, who shared some insights about Kyoto's nightlife scene. It was a great way to connect with a local and learn more about the city from a different perspective.

As I sipped my beer, I thought about everything I had seen and done today. From the serene beauty of Kiyomizu-dera to the vibrant energy of Gion, Kyoto had truly captured my heart. It was a city that seamlessly blended tradition and modernity, offering something for everyone. I felt grateful for the opportunity to experience it all, to immerse myself in its culture and history. It reminded me of a German saying Hans taught me: Alles hat ein Ende, nur die Wurst hat zwei – Everything has an end, only the sausage has two. But I intend to enjoy every last bit of this trip.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Philosopher's Path, Nanzen-ji Temple, and Heian Shrine. I'm also looking forward to doing some shopping at Kyoto LOFT. But for now, it's time to rest and recharge, ready for another day of adventure in this amazing city.
