A Day of Heights and History
Today was a day of soaring heights and delving into the rich history of the Dolomites. I was eager to experience the panoramic views from the Terrazza delle Dolomiti and to explore the Viel dal Pan, a trail steeped in local lore. With the family in tow, we set out for a day filled with breathtaking scenery and delicious culinary discoveries.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Baita Sole in Canazei. The buffet offered a delightful array of options, from fresh pastries to local cheeses and cured meats. Aisha particularly enjoyed the selection of fresh fruit, while Hans appreciated the strong Italian coffee, essential for the day’s adventures. I savored a traditional pastry, enjoying the cozy atmosphere as we prepared for the day ahead. It was a perfect way to fuel up before heading to the heights of the Dolomites.

After breakfast, we drove towards Passo Pordoi, the starting point for our ascent to the Terrazza delle Dolomiti. The drive itself was stunning, with winding roads offering glimpses of the majestic peaks that define this region. Arriving at Passo Pordoi, we boarded the cable car that would whisk us up to the Terrazza delle Dolomiti, also known as the ‘Terrace of the Dolomites’. The ride was swift, and as we ascended, the views became increasingly spectacular. From the top, at nearly 3,000 meters, the panorama was simply breathtaking. The crisp mountain air invigorated us as we gazed out at the surrounding peaks, including the Marmolada, the Sella group, and the Sassolungo. Aisha was especially thrilled, pointing out the various peaks and valleys with childlike wonder. The Terrazza delle Dolomiti truly lives up to its name, offering an unparalleled vantage point to appreciate the grandeur of the Dolomites. I took countless photos, trying to capture the sheer scale and beauty of the landscape, knowing full well that no image could truly do it justice.
Next on our agenda was the Viel dal Pan, a historic trail that translates to “Bread Route”. This path was once used by traders to transport goods, and today it offers a relatively easy and incredibly scenic hike along the slopes of the Marmolada. We started our hike from near the Rifugio Belvedere, taking path #601. The trail was mostly flat, with gentle ups and downs, making it perfect for a family hike. As we walked, we were treated to stunning views of the Fedaia Lake and the Marmolada glacier. The vibrant green meadows contrasted beautifully with the rugged, snow-capped peaks, creating a landscape that felt both serene and awe-inspiring. Aisha, ever the curious explorer, was fascinated by the wildflowers that dotted the trail, each one a tiny burst of color against the verdant backdrop. Hans and I enjoyed the peaceful rhythm of the hike, the only sounds being our footsteps and the occasional chirping of birds.
About halfway through our Viel dal Pan hike, we stopped for lunch at Rifugio Fodom. This mountain refuge is known for its traditional Italian dishes and warm hospitality. We sat on the terrace, soaking in the sunshine and enjoying the panoramic views while we ate. Hans opted for the spaghetti carbonara, while I chose the monkfish, both of which were delicious. Aisha, of course, wanted pizza, which was cooked to perfection in a wood-fired oven. The Rifugio Fodom was the perfect place to rest and refuel before continuing our hike, offering not only great food but also a chance to connect with fellow travelers and locals.

After our delightful lunch, we completed the Viel dal Pan hike, eventually making our way back to Canazei. Feeling a bit footsore but thoroughly satisfied, we decided to unwind with a visit to Wine Bar Oma. This cozy wine bar, recommended by a local we met on the trail, offered a wide selection of local and Italian wines. We sat outside, enjoying a glass of regional red wine while Aisha sipped on apple juice. The atmosphere was relaxed and convivial, and we found ourselves chatting with other patrons, sharing stories of our day’s adventures. It was a lovely way to cap off a day of exploration and discovery.

For dinner, we chose Osteria La Montanara, a charming restaurant in Canazei known for its authentic Ladin cuisine. The osteria had a warm and inviting ambiance, with wooden furnishings and traditional décor. We started with a selection of local cheeses and cured meats, followed by hearty portions of homemade pasta. Hans raved about the pork shank with polenta, while I savored the sliced beef with mushrooms and vegetables. Aisha, predictably, devoured her pasta with gusto. The service was friendly and efficient, and the prices were reasonable, making it an excellent choice for a family dinner. It was the perfect way to end a day of memorable experiences.

As we walked back to our vacation rental, under a sky full of stars, I reflected on the day’s adventures. From the dizzying heights of the Terrazza delle Dolomiti to the historic trails of the Viel dal Pan and the delicious flavors of Canazei, today had been a true feast for the senses. The Dolomites had once again captivated us with their stunning beauty and rich cultural heritage. Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Parco Naturale Puez Odle and the Laghetto Lupo Bianco, promising another day filled with natural wonders and unforgettable experiences. I am particularly excited to see the unique flora and fauna of the natural park, and Aisha is already dreaming of spotting some wildlife. As I drifted off to sleep, I felt grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with my family, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
The Dolomites continue to surprise and inspire me. I am already looking forward to what tomorrow will bring!
