A Day Amongst Giants

Today was a day of pure Dolomiti magic! Leaving behind the cozy confines of our vacation rental, my family and I ventured deep into the heart of the mountains, ready to embrace the stunning landscapes that everyone back in Bamberg told me about. It was a blend of invigorating hikes, tranquil moments by pristine waters, and delightful culinary experiences that painted a perfect picture of life in this Italian paradise.

The morning started with an early breakfast at Baita Gherdeccia. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong Italian coffee filled the air as we stepped inside. Aisha was particularly excited about the pastries, and Hans couldn't resist ordering a hearty plate of speck and eggs. As for me, I enjoyed a simple yet satisfying bowl of muesli with fresh fruit, fueling up for our day of hiking. The cozy, rustic atmosphere of the *baita* was the perfect start to our adventure, making me feel right at home, even thousands of kilometers away from Bamberg. Baita Gherdeccia is a charming mountain hut where guests can savor hearty local dishes in a rustic setting.

Our first stop was the Parco Naturale Puez Odle, a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its dramatic peaks and diverse trails. As we drove into the park, the towering Odle/Geisler Group came into view, their jagged spires piercing the clear blue sky. I felt a sense of awe and humility looking up at these natural giants, a feeling I always cherish when traveling. The park was established to protect the unique geological formations and diverse ecosystems of the region. We parked the car and consulted our hiking map, deciding on a trail that would be suitable for Aisha, yet still offer breathtaking views. The crisp mountain air invigorated us as we set off, the sound of cowbells echoing in the distance. I made sure to pack sunscreen, remembering my forgotten essentials from the trip preparations.

The trail wound through lush meadows dotted with wildflowers, their vibrant colors a stark contrast to the grey rock faces above. Aisha was fascinated by the butterflies flitting around, trying to catch them with her small hands. Hans, ever the enthusiastic photographer, snapped away, capturing the stunning vistas at every turn. I took my time, soaking in the beauty of the landscape, feeling grateful for this opportunity to share such incredible moments with my family. It reminded me of hiking in Franconian Switzerland, but on a grander scale.

“The mountains are calling and I must go.”

We paused for a brief rest at a scenic overlook, where we could see for miles in every direction. The panoramic views were simply breathtaking, and I felt a surge of inspiration, already envisioning the blog post I would write about this unforgettable day. I shared some dates and nuts I had packed, and Aisha was delighted when I told her a German idiom about mountains, something I’ve been trying to incorporate more into my writing lately. According to the Puez-Geisler / Puez-Odle Nature Park Visitor Center, the park offers a magnificent series of images that show you the wonders of the park.

Continuing our hike, we eventually reached a small wooden bridge spanning a crystal-clear stream. Aisha insisted on taking off her shoes and wading in the icy water, giggling with delight as the cold water tickled her toes. Hans and I watched her, smiling, our hearts full of joy. It’s moments like these that make traveling with family so special, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

After our refreshing break, we made our way to Laghetto Lupo Bianco, a serene alpine lake nestled amidst towering peaks. The lake's tranquil waters reflected the surrounding mountains like a mirror, creating a picture-perfect scene. We took a leisurely stroll around the lake, admiring the beauty of the landscape and breathing in the fresh mountain air. Hotel Lupo Bianco dominates the Val di Fassa and is located a few kilometers from Canazei. It is surrounded by nature with a wonderful view of the Sellaronda. I imagined what it must be like to see the lake in winter, covered in a blanket of snow. Perhaps we'll have to come back during the winter season to experience that magical sight.

By this time, our stomachs were starting to rumble, so we headed to Stua de Zach for lunch. This charming restaurant is located near the Laghetto delle Pozze, offering stunning views of the Dolomites. The restaurant is located on the shores of Laghetto delle Pozze, a meeting point for fishing enthusiasts. We were immediately greeted by the friendly staff and seated at a table overlooking the lake. The restaurant’s ambiance was warm and inviting, with traditional wooden décor and cozy lighting. I am always on the lookout for restaurants that can accommodate my dietary needs, and I was delighted to learn that Stua de Zach offers gluten-free options for those with celiac disease.

We started with a selection of local cheeses and cured meats, savoring the authentic flavors of the region. For our main courses, Hans ordered a hearty plate of *Schlutzkrapfen*, a traditional Tyrolean pasta dish filled with spinach and ricotta. Aisha opted for a simple but delicious plate of pasta with tomato sauce, while I decided to try the grilled trout, a local specialty. Every dish was prepared with fresh, high-quality ingredients, and the flavors were simply divine. The traditional cuisine of Carmen and the creativity of Pietro give life to La Stua de Zach, the restaurant of Hotel Miralago, in Passo San Pellegrino.

After lunch, we decided to indulge in a bit of souvenir shopping at Souvenir El Gnomo. This charming shop offered a wide array of local handicrafts and traditional souvenirs, from cuckoo clocks to Tyrolean tablecloths. Aisha was immediately drawn to the colorful array of toys, while Hans browsed the selection of local wines and spirits. I picked up a few small trinkets for my friends back in Bamberg, wanting to share a piece of our Dolomiti adventure with them. El Gnomo Souvenirs offers typical and handcrafted objects of various kinds.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Queen Restaurant for dinner. Despite its name, which reminds me of that drag queen dinner I saw advertised in New Jersey, this Queen Restaurant is located in the heart of the Dolomites, and it promised a delightful culinary experience. The restaurant had a sophisticated ambiance, with elegant décor and soft lighting. It was the perfect place to unwind after a day of hiking and exploration.

We started with a round of *aperol spritzes*, a classic Italian cocktail that is both refreshing and delicious. For our main courses, Hans ordered the grilled steak, while Aisha chose the Margherita pizza. I decided to try the seafood risotto, which was cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. The service was impeccable, and the staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome.

Reflecting on our day, I realized how much I cherish these moments with my family, exploring new places and creating lasting memories. The Dolomites have a way of capturing your heart, with their stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage. I’m already looking forward to tomorrow, when we plan to visit Belvedere di Canazei and Seceda Ridgeline. I wonder what breathtaking views and unforgettable experiences await us.

As we drove back to our vacation rental, the sky was ablaze with color, the setting sun painting the mountains in hues of orange and pink. Aisha fell asleep in the back seat, her face flushed with exhaustion and happiness. Hans and I exchanged a knowing glance, both feeling incredibly grateful for this opportunity to experience the beauty of the Dolomites together. It's moments like these that remind me why I love to travel, to explore, and to share my experiences with all of you.

Tomorrow, we're off to Belvedere di Canazei and Seceda Ridgeline, and I can't wait to see what adventures await! I'm also hoping we'll have time to stop by Bar Genziana for a relaxing evening drink. Until then, *Arrivederci* from the beautiful Dolomites!

I'm so glad I didn't forget the camera, as I was able to capture the beauty of the Dolomites!
