Seville's Enchanting Embrace
Today was a day of wandering through Seville's most iconic locations, each corner revealing a new layer of the city's rich history and vibrant culture. Lena and I set out with our trusty camera and comfortable shoes, ready to immerse ourselves in the beauty that Seville had to offer. From grand plazas to serene parks and historic houses, every moment was a delightful exploration. It's amazing how a single day can feel like a journey through centuries, each place telling its own unique story.
Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at El Rinconcillo. What a charming, historic place! Established way back in 1670, it's supposedly the oldest tapas bar in Seville. I went for the *tortilla de patatas* while Lena enjoyed some *churros* with chocolate. It felt like stepping back in time, with the traditional decor and the waiters writing down orders in chalk. The atmosphere was buzzing with locals and tourists alike, all eager to start their day with some authentic Sevillian flavors. Fuelled up, we were ready to explore!

First on our list was the magnificent Plaza de España. As we approached, the sheer scale of the plaza took our breath away. The semi-circular design, the intricate tile work, and the grand towers all combined to create a stunning architectural masterpiece. Built for the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929, the plaza is a symbol of Spain's embrace of its former colonies.

We strolled along the canal, admiring the 48 tiled alcoves, each representing a different Spanish province. It was fascinating to see the unique designs and colors of each region. I couldn't resist taking photos of the Kelowna tile, a little piece of home so far away. Lena and I even considered renting a rowboat for a leisurely ride on the canal, but decided to explore the plaza on foot instead. The atmosphere was lively, with street performers, musicians, and vendors adding to the vibrant scene.
Seville is a city that captures your heart with its blend of history, beauty, and vibrant culture, offering endless opportunities for exploration and discovery.
Next, we wandered into the Parque de María Luisa, a lush green oasis right next to the Plaza de España. The park was a welcome escape from the bustling city, with its shady paths, tranquil fountains, and colorful flower beds. Designed by Jean-Claude Nicolas Forestier, the park has a romantic touch, inspired by the gardens of the Generalife and the Alhambra. We strolled along the winding paths, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and the beautiful scenery.

I was particularly captivated by the Glorieta de Bécquer, a charming monument dedicated to the Spanish poet Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer. The monument features a statue of three women, representing love in its different stages. It was a beautiful and serene spot, perfect for a moment of reflection. Lena, always the observant one, pointed out the Mudejar Pavilion and the Royal Pavilion, remnants of the 1929 exhibition, adding to the park's historical charm. We also saw lots of orange trees, laden with fruit. Apparently, Seville is nicknamed 'the frying pan' of Europe because of its hot summers, but in January, it's just perfect for strolling through parks.
After a relaxing morning, it was time for lunch. We headed to Espacio Eslava, a tapas bar recommended by several locals. The place was small and cozy, with a lively atmosphere. We managed to snag a table and ordered a selection of tapas, including the renowned *cigarro para Bécquer* (a cigarette for Bécquer) and the pork ribs with honey. Each dish was a burst of flavor, showcasing the creativity and skill of the chefs. It was a delightful culinary experience, and we left feeling satisfied and energized for the afternoon's adventures.

Our final stop of the day was the Casa de Pilatos, a stunning palace that blends Renaissance, Gothic, and Mudejar architectural styles. As we stepped inside, we were transported back to the 15th century. The palace was built by Pedro Enríquez de Quiñones and his wife Catalina de Rivera, and it's one of the best examples of Andalusian architecture in Seville.

The courtyard was the centerpiece of the palace, surrounded by intricate arches, marble columns, and beautiful sculptures. Lena was particularly impressed by the azulejo tiles, which were incredibly detailed and colorful. We explored the various rooms and gardens, each one revealing a new aspect of the palace's rich history and artistic heritage. The blend of architectural styles was seamless, creating a unique and harmonious atmosphere. I learned that the Casa de Pilatos is often overlooked by tourists, but it's a true hidden gem of Seville.
Before dinner, we took a detour to Ceramica Santa Cruz, a charming shop specializing in handcrafted ceramics. Located in the heart of Seville, this store is a treasure trove of Andalusian artistry. Lena, with her keen eye for design, was immediately drawn to the intricate patterns and vibrant colors of the ceramic pieces. We browsed through the collection, admiring the hand-painted tiles, decorative plates, and unique souvenirs. It was fascinating to learn about the traditional techniques used to create these beautiful works of art. We ended up buying a small, hand-painted bowl as a memento of our visit to Seville.

For dinner, we chose Restaurante El Pintón, known for its modern take on traditional Spanish tapas. The restaurant had a stylish and contemporary vibe, with colorful decor and a lively atmosphere. We started with some *croquetas* and *artichoke hearts*, followed by the *tuna tartare* and *roasted aubergine*. Each dish was beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. The service was excellent, and the staff were friendly and attentive. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and discovery.

As we walked back to our hotel, the Basic Hotel Doña Manuela, the streets of Seville were alive with people enjoying the warm evening air. We reflected on the day's adventures, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience the beauty and charm of this incredible city. Seville is a place that truly captures your heart, with its blend of history, culture, and vibrant energy. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures, which include exploring the Setas de Sevilla, the Archivo de Indias, and the Torre del Oro. And maybe, just maybe, we'll cap the day off with a gin and tonic at The Gintonería. Until then, *buenas noches* from Seville!

The fact that it is January, and we are experiencing mild and sunny weather, makes the trip even more enjoyable. I am glad we chose this time of year to visit Seville.
Tomorrow, we're planning to visit the Setas de Sevilla, the Archivo de Indias, and the Torre del Oro. Lena is particularly excited about the Setas, while I'm looking forward to exploring the historical archives. We might even treat ourselves to a drink at The Gintonería in the evening. It's going to be another day filled with adventure and discovery!
As I sit here writing, I can't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience such a beautiful and vibrant city. Seville has a way of capturing your heart and leaving you wanting more. I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings, and I'm sure it will be another day filled with unforgettable moments.
I almost forgot to mention how much I miss having a portable phone charger! My phone died halfway through the afternoon, and I had to rely on Lena's phone for the rest of the day. It's a good reminder to always pack the essentials, even if it means sacrificing a little bit of space in my backpack. And a reusable water bottle would have been great too, especially with all the walking we did today.
Despite these minor setbacks, today was an amazing day. Seville has exceeded all of my expectations, and I can't wait to see what else this city has in store for us. Until tomorrow, *adiós* from Seville!
