Exploring Seville's Rich Culture and History
Day 3: A Friday of Discovery: Seville's Modern Marvels and Ancient Echoes
Exploring Seville's architectural wonders and historical treasures, from the heights of Setas to the depths of the Indies archive.
Seville's Story Unfolds
Today was a day of contrasts, a journey through time and architectural styles that left Lena and me utterly captivated. Seville is a city that wears its history on its sleeve, yet isn't afraid to embrace the modern. It’s a place where ancient archives stand proudly alongside futuristic structures, each telling a unique chapter of this city's vibrant story.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at La Bartola. It was a small, cozy place with a lively atmosphere. Lena and I managed to snag a table and ordered a selection of tapas. Everything was delicious, especially the grilled baby squid. It set the perfect tone for a day of exploring.
Soaring Above Seville: Setas de Sevilla
Our first stop was the Setas de Sevilla, also known as the Metropol Parasol. From the moment we approached it, I was struck by its sheer scale and audacious design. This wasn't just another historical monument; it was a bold statement, a testament to Seville's willingness to embrace the future. As a software developer, I’m always fascinated by innovative designs, and the Setas certainly didn’t disappoint.

We bought our tickets and ascended to the top of this wooden marvel. The views were simply breathtaking. Seville unfolded beneath us, a tapestry of terracotta rooftops, church spires, and bustling plazas. I could spot the Giralda in the distance, a familiar landmark amidst the urban sprawl. Lena, ever the artist, was particularly taken with the way the winter sunlight played across the city, casting long shadows and highlighting the intricate details of the architecture. There's also a short video about Seville's culture, which we found to be a nice touch.
The Setas de Sevilla offers a unique perspective, reminding us that even the most historic cities are constantly evolving, reinventing themselves for new generations.
As we strolled along the elevated walkways, I couldn't help but marvel at the structure itself. The intricate latticework of wood created a mesmerizing play of light and shadow. It felt like we were walking through the skeleton of some giant, benevolent creature. I learned that the Setas is one of the largest wooden structures in the world, a fact that only added to its impressiveness. The weather was perfect for a stroll, not too hot and not too cold.
Delving into History: Archivo de Indias
After our aerial adventure, we decided to delve into Seville's rich past at the Archivo de Indias. Housed in a magnificent Renaissance building, this archive holds a vast collection of documents related to the Spanish Empire in the Americas and Asia. As someone with a keen interest in history, I was eager to explore its treasures.

Stepping inside, we were immediately transported to another era. The hushed atmosphere, the rows upon rows of ancient documents, and the sheer weight of history in the air were palpable. It was fascinating to think that these documents held the stories of explorers, conquistadors, and indigenous peoples, all intertwined in the complex narrative of colonialism.
I was particularly interested in the maps and nautical charts. As a child growing up in Kelowna, I was always fascinated by maps, tracing the routes of explorers and dreaming of far-off lands. To see these ancient charts, meticulously drawn by hand, was a truly awe-inspiring experience. Lena was captivated by the elegant script and intricate designs of the documents, appreciating them as works of art in their own right.
The Archivo General de Indias was created in 1785 by King Charles III to centralize all documents relating to the Spanish colonies. Inside, there are kilometers of shelves filled with original documents that detail the history of the Spanish Empire.
A Golden Reflection: Torre del Oro
Our next stop was the Torre del Oro, a historic watchtower that stands proudly on the banks of the Guadalquivir River. Its name, meaning Tower of Gold, is said to derive from the golden sheen it cast upon the water, a result of the building materials used in its construction. The tower has served many purposes throughout its history, from a defensive structure to a prison and, today, a naval museum.

We climbed to the top of the tower, eager to take in the panoramic views. From this vantage point, we could see the river snaking its way through the city, the Triana neighborhood spread out on the opposite bank, and the distant hills of Andalusia. The January air was crisp and clear, and the sunlight glinted off the water, creating a truly magical scene. I learned that the tower was built by the Almohads in the 13th century as part of the city's defenses. A chain would stretch across the river from the tower to block enemy ships.
The Torre del Oro is divided into three levels, each built in different eras. The first level, dodecagonal, was built in 1220 by the Almohad governor of Seville, Abù l-Ulà. The second level, also dodecagonal but smaller, was added by Peter of Castile in the 14th century. The third and uppermost level, circular in shape, was added in 1760 after the original Almohad level was damaged in an earthquake.
Culinary Delights: A Seville Feast
After a day of exploring, our appetites were calling, so we headed to El Traga for lunch. This restaurant had been recommended to us by several locals, and it certainly lived up to the hype. The modern Spanish cuisine was innovative and delicious, and the ambiance was warm and inviting. We shared a selection of tapas, each one a culinary masterpiece. I particularly enjoyed the tuna toast and the octopus, while Lena raved about the Lomo Bajo steak.

As evening approached, we made our way to Abades Triana Restaurante for dinner. Situated on the Triana side of the Guadalquivir River, this contemporary restaurant offered stunning views of the city skyline. The menu featured classic dishes with a modern twist, and the wine list was extensive. The service was impeccable, and the atmosphere was both elegant and relaxed. We both agreed that the food was exceptional, and the staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome.

To cap off the evening, we decided to experience Seville's nightlife at The Gintonería. This bar was a gin lover's paradise, with a vast selection of brands and flavor combinations. The bartender was incredibly knowledgeable and helped us choose the perfect drinks to suit our tastes. As I am a beer enthusiast, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the gin-based cocktails. The ambiance was lively and fun, and we ended up chatting with several locals, exchanging stories and laughter.

Reflections on the Day
As we walked back to our hotel, hand in hand, Lena and I reflected on the day's adventures. Seville had surprised us with its blend of ancient history and modern innovation. From the soaring heights of the Setas to the hushed halls of the Archivo de Indias, we had experienced the city's many layers.
“Seville is a city that knows how to live in the present while honoring its past,” Lena mused, and I couldn't agree more.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Flamenco Dance Museum and the Juderia, Seville's old Jewish quarter. I'm particularly looking forward to experiencing a traditional flamenco performance. Knowing Seville, I'm sure it will be another day filled with unforgettable moments.
As I sit here in our cozy hotel room, writing these words, I feel a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience this incredible city with the woman I love. Seville is more than just a destination; it's an experience that touches the soul. And I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
In the meantime, I'm off to brew myself a cup of tea and dream of Moorish watchtowers, ancient archives, and the vibrant flavors of Andalusia.
Until tomorrow!
