Seville's Story Unfolds

Today was a day of contrasts, a journey through time and architectural styles that left Lena and me utterly captivated. Seville is a city that wears its history on its sleeve, yet isn't afraid to embrace the modern. We bought our tickets and ascended to the top of this wooden marvel. The views were simply breathtaking. Seville unfolded beneath us, a tapestry of terracotta rooftops, church spires, and bustling plazas. I could spot the Giralda in the distance, a familiar landmark amidst the urban sprawl. Lena, ever the artist, was particularly taken with the way the winter sunlight played across the city, casting long shadows and highlighting the intricate details of the architecture. There's also a short video about Seville's culture, which we found to be a nice touch.

As someone with a keen interest in history, I was eager to explore its treasures.

Stepping inside, we were immediately transported to another era. The hushed atmosphere, the rows upon rows of ancient documents, and the sheer weight of history in the air were palpable. I was particularly interested in the maps and nautical charts. As a child growing up in Kelowna, I was always fascinated by maps, tracing the routes of explorers and dreaming of far-off lands. To see these ancient charts, meticulously drawn by hand, was a truly awe-inspiring experience. Lena was captivated by the elegant script and intricate designs of the documents, appreciating them as works of art in their own right.

From this vantage point, we could see the river snaking its way through the city, the Triana neighborhood spread out on the opposite bank, and the distant hills of Andalusia. The January air was crisp and clear, and the sunlight glinted off the water, creating a truly magical scene. I learned that the tower was built by the Almohads in the 13th century as part of the city's defenses. A chain would stretch across the river from the tower to block enemy ships.

The Torre del Oro is divided into three levels, each built in different eras. The first level, dodecagonal, was built in 1220 by the Almohad governor of Seville, Abù l-Ulà. The second level, also dodecagonal but smaller, was added by Peter of Castile in the 14th century. The third and uppermost level, circular in shape, was added in 1760 after the original Almohad level was damaged in an earthquake.

Culinary Delights: A Seville Feast

After a day of exploring, our appetites were calling, so we headed to El Traga for lunch. This restaurant had been recommended to us by several locals, and it certainly lived up to the hype. The modern Spanish cuisine was innovative and delicious, and the ambiance was warm and inviting. We shared a selection of tapas, each one a culinary masterpiece. I particularly enjoyed the tuna toast and the octopus, while Lena raved about the Lomo Bajo steak.

We both agreed that the food was exceptional, and the staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome.

To cap off the evening, we decided to experience Seville's nightlife at The Gintonería. This bar was a gin lover's paradise, with a vast selection of brands and flavor combinations. The bartender was incredibly knowledgeable and helped us choose the perfect drinks to suit our tastes. As I am a beer enthusiast, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the gin-based cocktails. The ambiance was lively and fun, and we ended up chatting with several locals, exchanging stories and laughter.

Reflections on the Day

As we walked back to our hotel, hand in hand, Lena and I reflected on the day's adventures. Seville had surprised us with its blend of ancient history and modern innovation. From the soaring heights of the Setas to the hushed halls of the Archivo de Indias, we had experienced the city's many layers.
