Exploring Seville's Rich Culture and History
Day 6: A Day of Serenity and Sherry in Seville
Discover Seville's hidden gems: tranquil parks, architectural wonders, and the perfect sherry, all while soaking in the city's charm.
A Peaceful Pause in Seville
Today was all about slowing down and savoring the quieter side of Seville. After a whirlwind of cathedrals and palaces, Lena and I decided to dedicate the day to exploring some of the city's more tranquil spots. It's amazing how a change of pace can offer a completely different perspective on a place.
Our day began with a leisurely breakfast at Restaurante Los Rincones del Marqués. It was a delightful start to the day. The atmosphere was relaxed, and the food was delicious. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring. I had read some reviews mentioning that the portions of croquettes were small, but we found it to be just right for a morning meal. The setting was peaceful, providing a calm start before diving into our itinerary.
First on our list was the Plaza de América, nestled within the Parque de María Luisa. Getting there, the air was crisp, a typical January day in Seville with temperatures hovering around a comfortable 15 degrees Celsius. The park itself was a breath of fresh air, a welcome escape from the bustling city streets. The Plaza de América is a stunning square. The architecture is incredible, with the three buildings showcasing different styles. The Museum of Popular Arts, the Archaeological Museum, and the Royal Pavilion were all built for the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929. It felt like stepping back in time, imagining the grandeur of the exposition. Lena, ever the graphic designer, was particularly taken with the details of the azulejos, the ceramic tiles that adorned the buildings.
Seville has a way of revealing its beauty in the quiet moments, in the hidden corners, and in the simple pleasures.
From there, we wandered deeper into the Parque de María Luisa, eventually finding ourselves in the Parque de las Palomas, or Dove Park. It was an amusing sight, with countless pigeons fluttering around, eager to be fed. I even saw a vendor selling packets of food for tourists to offer the birds. It reminded me of childhood visits to parks back home, though I don't think the pigeons in Kelowna are quite as bold as these ones! We watched families laughing as the birds swarmed around them, a simple scene of joy that was infectious. The park itself is beautiful, with lush greenery and hidden pathways. It's easy to see why it's a favorite spot for locals and tourists alike.
For lunch, we had reservations at Restaurante Mirador de Sevilla. The restaurant offers stunning views of the city, including the Giralda. The food was delicious, and the service was impeccable. I tried some local dishes that were recommended and enjoyed some good local wine. The restaurant definitely lived up to its reputation. It was a bit pricier than some of the other places we've eaten, but the view and the quality of the food made it worth it. Lena particularly enjoyed the seafood, while I opted for a traditional meat dish.
After lunch, we made our way to the Palacio de San Telmo. The palace is an imposing building, a beautiful example of Baroque architecture. We learned that it was originally built as a university for navigators. Later it became the residence of the Dukes of Montpensier. Today, it serves as the seat of the presidency of the Andalusian Autonomous Government. The history of the building is fascinating, and its presence is a reminder of Seville's rich past. Unfortunately, we couldn't go inside, as it's only open for visits on certain days and by appointment. However, we admired it from the outside, appreciating its grandeur and beauty. The sculptures on the façade were particularly impressive, depicting various historical figures from Seville. It's definitely a building that commands attention.
As the afternoon wore on, we decided it was time for a drink. We headed to Premier Sherry & Cocktail Bar, a place I'd read about that specializes in sherry-based cocktails. Now, I'll admit, I'm usually a beer or wine kind of guy, but I was intrigued. The bar was cozy and inviting, with a great atmosphere. The bartender was incredibly knowledgeable, explaining the different types of sherry and recommending cocktails based on our preferences. I tried a sherry old-fashioned, and Lena opted for a sherry-infused gin and tonic. Both were delicious! It was a fun and different experience, and I'm glad we stepped outside of our comfort zones.
Dinner tonight was at Restaurante Cristina Bistró. The restaurant is known for its Spanish cuisine and fresh ingredients. We enjoyed a variety of tapas. The tuna tataki was a standout dish. The atmosphere was lively, and the service was friendly. It was a great way to end our day of exploration. It had a modern and inviting feel, and the menu was full of creative dishes. We shared several tapas, each one more delicious than the last. The owner was attentive, making sure we had everything we needed. It's clear that they take pride in their food and service.
Looking ahead to tomorrow, our last day in Seville, we're planning to visit the Monastery of Santa Maria de las Cuevas, Casa de Pilatos, and the Murillo Gardens. I'm particularly excited about the Monastery, as I've heard it has a fascinating history. We'll also be having breakfast at Azahar, lunch at Restaurante Tribeca, and dinner at Restaurante Realcázar. Before heading to the airport, we'll make a stop at La Importadora Shop Gallery for some last-minute souvenirs.
As I sit here writing this, I'm feeling a sense of contentment. Today was a reminder that travel isn't just about ticking off landmarks. It's also about taking the time to appreciate the simple things, to wander without a plan, and to savor the local flavors. Seville has a way of revealing its beauty in the quiet moments, in the hidden corners, and in the simple pleasures. I'm grateful for the opportunity to experience this city with Lena, and I'm looking forward to our final day here.
It's hard to believe our time in Seville is almost over. It feels like just yesterday we were arriving at the Basic Hotel Doña Manuela, excited to begin our exploration. Time really does fly when you're having fun. I'm already thinking about our next adventure, but for now, I'm going to soak in every last moment of this one. I think I'll go have a glass of wine on our hotel balcony and enjoy the warm evening air. Until tomorrow!
And as a side note, I'm definitely adding a portable phone charger to my list of travel essentials. My phone battery died halfway through the afternoon, which made navigating a bit tricky. Lesson learned!
This trip has been a wonderful escape from my usual routine in Heidelberg. While I love my work as a software developer, and I enjoy brewing my own beer and cycling along the Neckar River, there's something about exploring a new city that recharges my batteries. And of course, sharing these experiences with Lena makes it all the more special. She's always up for trying new things and exploring new places, and her perspective as a graphic designer adds another layer of appreciation to our travels. I'm lucky to have her by my side.
