Adios, Seville! A Final Day of Discovery

As our week-long adventure in Seville draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences we've had. Seville, with its vibrant culture and stunning architecture, has truly captured my heart. Today, our final day, was a perfect blend of history, art, and relaxation, providing a fitting end to this memorable trip with Lena.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Azahar, nestled within the Hospes Las Casas del Rey de Baeza. The hotel itself is stunning, and the breakfast was the perfect start to our day, fueling us up for a day of exploration. Azahar offered a wide array of choices, from traditional Andalusian pastries to continental staples. I opted for a classic tostada with tomato and olive oil, while Lena enjoyed some fresh fruit and yogurt. It's amazing how such simple ingredients can taste so incredible when prepared with care. I am definitely going to miss these morning experiences.

With our stomachs full and spirits high, we set off to explore the Monastery of Santa Maria de las Cuevas. This historic site, also known as Monasterio de la Cartuja, has a fascinating history, having served as a monastery, a ceramics factory, and even a refuge for Christopher Columbus before his voyages. The architecture was stunning, and the peaceful atmosphere was a welcome escape from the bustling city. The mix of architectural styles, reflecting its varied past, was particularly striking. Wandering through the courtyards, I couldn't help but imagine the monks who once called this place home, and the artisans who later transformed it into a center of ceramic production. Lena, with her graphic designer's eye, was particularly fascinated by the tile work and the intricate details of the buildings. The monastery now also houses the Andalusian Centre for Contemporary Art (CAAC), so we got a dose of modern creativity alongside the historical immersion.

Travel is about the gorgeous feeling of teetering in the unknown.

Next on our itinerary was the Casa de Pilatos, a palace that seamlessly blends Renaissance and Mudéjar architectural styles. As we stepped through its grand entrance, we were transported back in time. The palace, built in the 15th and 16th centuries, is filled with stunning courtyards, intricate tile work, and beautiful gardens. It felt like stepping into a movie set, and it's no surprise that Casa de Pilatos has been featured in several films, including Lawrence of Arabia and Kingdom of Heaven.. I was particularly impressed by the central courtyard, with its Roman busts and serene atmosphere. Lena was captivated by the upper floor, which showcased a collection of antique furniture and artwork. The history of the palace is as rich as its architecture. It was begun by Pedro Enríquez de Quiñones and his wife Catalina de Rivera in 1483, and expanded by their son Fadrique Enríquez de Rivera, who, after a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, believed the distance between his palace and a temple outside the city walls mirrored that between Pontius Pilate's house and Golgotha. This led to the palace being named Casa de Pilatos.

After immersing ourselves in history and architecture, we decided to take a leisurely stroll through the Murillo Gardens. These gardens, named after the famous Sevillian painter Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, provided a tranquil escape from the city's hustle and bustle. Designed by Juan Talavera y Heredia, the gardens feature a network of pathways, fountains, and lush vegetation. It was the perfect place to relax and soak in the beauty of Seville. The gardens are located next to the Barrio de Santa Cruz, and were formerly part of the retreat of the Alcázar until they were ceded to the city council by King Alfonso XIII in the early 20th century. It was Baldomero Laguillo Bonilla, a lawyer and town councillor, who proposed the name of Murillo Gardens, since they are near the house where the famous painter Bartolomé Esteban Murillo was born. We found a quiet bench beneath a canopy of orange trees and simply enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere. The air was filled with the sweet scent of blossoms, and the gentle sound of the fountains created a soothing backdrop. I took the opportunity to sketch some of the garden's features, while Lena read a book. It was a perfect moment of tranquility.

For lunch, we ventured to Restaurante Tribeca, known for its Mediterranean cuisine with a modern twist. The restaurant's ambiance was elegant and inviting, and the staff were attentive and knowledgeable. We started with some tapas, including Iberian ham and fried squid, before moving on to our main courses. I opted for the grilled Iberian pork, while Lena chose the seafood paella. Both dishes were cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. Tribeca has earned a Michelin recommendation, and it's easy to see why. The quality of the ingredients, the skill of the chefs, and the impeccable service all contributed to a memorable dining experience.

In the late afternoon, we decided to do some souvenir shopping at La Importadora Shop Gallery. This eclectic shop, located in the Alfalfa neighborhood, is a treasure trove of art, fashion, and design. We browsed through the unique collection of clothing, jewelry, and home decor items, and eventually found a few special pieces to take back home. The shop is owned by the artist Rafael García Forcada, and it showcases a mix of international brands and local creations. Lena, with her keen eye for design, was particularly impressed by the shop's curated selection. I picked up a hand-painted ceramic tile, while Lena found a stylish scarf. It was a perfect way to support local artists and find unique reminders of our time in Seville.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Restaurante Realcázar for our final dinner in Seville. This restaurant, located near the Alcázar, offers a blend of Mediterranean and Spanish cuisine. The atmosphere was cozy and romantic, and the staff were friendly and welcoming. We started with some tapas, including patatas bravas and croquettes, before moving on to our main courses. I chose the grilled sea bass, while Lena opted for the lamb ravioli. Both dishes were delicious and beautifully presented. The restaurant also had an impressive wine list, and we enjoyed a bottle of local red wine with our meal. Restaurante Realcázar was the perfect place to celebrate our last night in Seville. The food was excellent, the atmosphere was charming, and the company was even better.

As we walked back to our hotel, hand in hand, we reflected on our incredible week in Seville. We had explored ancient palaces, wandered through fragrant gardens, and indulged in delicious cuisine. We had immersed ourselves in the local culture and created memories that would last a lifetime. Seville, with its rich history and vibrant atmosphere, had captured our hearts. As we prepare to leave tomorrow, we know that we will always cherish our time in this beautiful city.

Tomorrow, we head back to Heidelberg, filled with memories of Seville. It's always a bit bittersweet to leave a place you've fallen in love with, but I know we'll carry the spirit of Seville with us. Until next time, adios!

For those planning a trip to Seville, I highly recommend visiting in January. The weather is mild, the crowds are smaller, and the city is alive with a unique energy. Whether you're interested in history, art, food, or simply soaking in the local culture, Seville has something to offer everyone. And be sure to check out some of the local events, such as the Mudanza el Musical performance at Lady Drama, or the Endless Summer track days at the Seville Circuit. There's always something exciting happening in this vibrant city.

And with that, our Sevillian adventure comes to a close. Stay tuned for more travel stories and tips from around the world!
