Seville's Saturday Serenade

Another day, another adventure in Seville! Today was all about immersing ourselves in the heart and soul of this vibrant city. It was a day filled with passionate flamenco, a journey through history in the old Jewish quarter, and a dive into the unique local nightlife. Seville continues to surprise and enchant me, and I'm excited to share the experiences of our Saturday explorations.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Petit Comité.

This charming spot, recommended by several locals, didn't disappoint. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, and the menu offered a modern twist on traditional Andalusian dishes. Lena opted for the *boquerones fritos* (fried anchovies) which she enjoyed, while I went for the *Gym Tonic al plato* which was delicious! It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring.

With our stomachs full and our spirits high, we set off to our first destination: the Flamenco Dance Museum.

The Flamenco Dance Museum was an experience that went beyond just watching dance; it was about feeling the history, the passion, and the soul of flamenco. Founded by the legendary Cristina Hoyos, the museum itself is a beautiful space, housed in an 18th-century building in the heart of Seville. The exhibits were informative, detailing the evolution of flamenco, its various styles, and the cultural significance it holds in Andalusia.

We decided to watch the afternoon performance. The performance featured three dancers, two singers, and a guitarist. The raw emotion, the intricate footwork, and the haunting melodies transported us to another world. It was impossible not to be moved by the intensity and artistry on display. Lena was absolutely mesmerized, and I have to admit, I was equally captivated. It's easy to see why flamenco is considered an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO; it's an art form that speaks directly to the soul.

Flamenco is not just a dance; it's a conversation between the soul and the body.

After the show, we wandered into the Judería, Seville's old Jewish quarter.

Stepping into the Judería felt like stepping back in time. The narrow, winding streets, the whitewashed buildings, and the hidden plazas exuded an atmosphere of history and mystery. It was fascinating to learn about the area's past, how it was once a thriving Jewish community before the expulsion in 1492. We strolled along Calle Judería, imagining what life must have been like centuries ago. The intertwining streets created a labyrinth that offered glimpses into hidden courtyards, each filled with vibrant flowers and the soothing sound of trickling water.

As we wandered, we stumbled upon the Centro de Interpretación Judería de Sevilla, a small museum dedicated to the history of Seville's Jewish community. The exhibits provided valuable context to our walk, detailing the cultural and intellectual contributions of the Sephardic Jews to Seville's Golden Age. It was a sobering reminder of the rich, complex history that lies beneath the surface of this beautiful city. The Santa Cruz neighborhood, which encompasses the Judería, is a beautiful area to get lost in, and we enjoyed simply wandering without a specific destination in mind. The aroma of orange blossoms filled the air, adding a touch of magic to our exploration.

Before our evening plans, we stopped for a late lunch at Restaurante La Azotea. Having worked up an appetite from all the walking, we were ready to indulge in some of Seville's best tapas. The restaurant was buzzing with activity, a mix of locals and tourists all eager to sample the innovative cuisine. We shared a selection of tapas, including the tempura prawn salad with kimchi mayo and the spicy red tuna tacos with guacamole. Each dish was a burst of flavor, expertly prepared and beautifully presented. It's no wonder La Azotea is considered one of the top tapas spots in Seville; the quality of the food and the lively atmosphere made for a memorable dining experience.

As evening approached, it was time for another dose of flamenco, this time at Casa de la Memoria. While the Flamenco Dance Museum offered a historical and educational perspective, Casa de la Memoria promised a more intimate and traditional performance. Located in a 15th-century building in the heart of the city, the venue was small and atmospheric, creating an up-close and personal experience.

The show at Casa de la Memoria was a different but equally captivating experience. The performers were incredibly talented, and the passion in their voices and movements was palpable. The setting was intimate, and we felt like we were part of a private performance. The raw emotion and artistry on display were truly unforgettable. It was a perfect way to end our exploration of Seville's flamenco scene.

After the show, we decided to embrace the local nightlife and visit Bar Garlochí - Sevilla. This bar is unlike anything I've ever seen. The interior is a riot of Catholic imagery, with statues of the Virgin Mary, crucifixes, and religious artifacts adorning every surface. The atmosphere is dark, mysterious, and slightly unsettling, but in a strangely captivating way. Apparently, the bar is quite popular within the gay community, and the music was a mix of cheesy Spanish tunes from the 70s.

We ordered the bar's signature drink, the *Sangre de Cristo* (Blood of Christ), a concoction of grenadine and other liquors. It was incredibly sweet, perhaps too sweet for my taste, but the novelty of the experience made it worthwhile. Bar Garlochí is definitely not for everyone, but if you're looking for a unique and unforgettable bar experience, it's a must-visit in Seville. It’s definitely one of the creepiest bars I've ever been to.

As we walked back to our hotel, the Basic Hotel Doña Manuela, we reflected on the day's adventures. Seville had once again exceeded our expectations, offering a blend of history, culture, and vibrant nightlife. The passionate flamenco, the historical Judería, and the quirky Bar Garlochí had all left a lasting impression. Lena and I are already looking forward to tomorrow, when we plan to explore the Triana neighborhood, known for its ceramics and lively atmosphere. We're also planning to visit the Centro Cerámica Triana and Calle Judería to continue our exploration of Seville's rich heritage. I'm also hoping to find a portable phone charger, as my phone died halfway through the evening, and I missed capturing some of the memories. However, I guess it also allowed me to be more present in the moment.
