Friday's Moroccan Charm
Today in Chefchaouen was a blend of breathtaking vistas, historical explorations, and delightful discoveries in the local artisan shops. Lena and I set out to soak in as much of the city's unique atmosphere as possible, and it certainly didn't disappoint. From panoramic views to copper lamps, every corner held a new surprise.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Toda Creperie & Ice Cream. The aroma of freshly made crepes filled the air as we stepped inside. I opted for a classic Nutella crepe, while Lena chose a strawberry and almond combination. Paired with strong Moroccan coffee, it was the perfect way to fuel up for our adventures. The cozy atmosphere and friendly staff made it a great start to our day. I even managed to practice a bit of my (still terrible) German with a couple of fellow tourists. They seemed quite impressed that I was trying, which was encouraging. It's these little interactions that really make traveling special.
With our appetites satisfied, we made our way to the Vue panoramique de la plage. Although the name suggests a beach view, it’s more of an elevated vantage point offering stunning views of the entire Chefchaouen region. The walk up was a bit steep, but the scenery along the way was worth it. The blue-washed buildings stretched out beneath us, creating a mesmerizing tapestry against the backdrop of the Rif Mountains. Lena, ever the graphic designer, was in her element, snapping photos from every conceivable angle. I tried my hand at capturing the scene as well, hoping at least one of my shots would do justice to the incredible view. It’s moments like these that remind me why I love photography – preserving memories of beautiful places and experiences.

The beauty of Chefchaouen lies not just in its iconic blue walls, but in the vibrant culture and warm hospitality of its people.
Next on our list was Bab El Ain, one of the main entry points to the old city. This gate, dating back to 1511, is more than just a historical landmark; it's a vibrant hub of local life. As we walked through the archway, we were immediately immersed in the bustling energy of the medina. The narrow, winding streets were filled with shops selling everything from spices and textiles to handmade crafts and souvenirs. We took our time wandering through the labyrinthine alleys, soaking in the sights, sounds, and smells of this vibrant marketplace. Lena was particularly fascinated by the colorful displays of traditional Moroccan clothing, while I was drawn to the intricate metalwork and ceramics.

For lunch, we decided to try Restaurant Al Wiam, a local favorite known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine. The restaurant was tucked away on a quiet side street, offering a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of the medina. We ordered a tagine with chicken and olives, and a couscous dish with vegetables. The tagine was rich and flavorful, the chicken tender and succulent. The couscous was light and fluffy, the vegetables perfectly cooked. Each bite was an explosion of Moroccan flavors, a testament to the culinary traditions of this region. Lena, who is always keen on trying new things, even sampled some harissa, a spicy chili paste, which definitely added a kick to her meal.

After lunch, we ventured into Chefchaouen copper and lamps shop. The shop was a veritable treasure trove of handcrafted copper goods, from intricate lamps and lanterns to ornate trays and teapots. The warm glow of the copper, combined with the intricate designs, created a magical atmosphere. I was particularly impressed by the skill and artistry of the local artisans, who have been practicing these crafts for generations. We ended up buying a beautiful copper lamp with a traditional Moroccan design, a perfect memento of our time in Chefchaouen. I am already envisioning it in our living room in Heidelberg, casting a warm, inviting glow on those long German evenings.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Chez Hicham for dinner. This restaurant, recommended by several locals, is known for its stunning views of the city. We arrived just in time to watch the sunset, as the sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant colors. The meal was delicious, featuring traditional Moroccan dishes with a modern twist. I opted for a grilled lamb dish, while Lena chose a vegetarian tagine. The food was excellent, but the real highlight was the view. As we sat there, savoring our meal and watching the city lights twinkle below, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for this incredible experience.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Plaza Mohammed V and Bab el Mahrouk. I am also looking forward to experiencing the sunset at Sunset at Sunset. I am also excited to simply wander and get lost in the blue alleys, discovering more hidden gems and soaking in the unique atmosphere of Chefchaouen. It feels like we are just scratching the surface of what this magical town has to offer.
Even though I had to leave my umbrella and extra memory card at home, I am glad that I came to Chefchaouen. It is truly a magical place, and I am looking forward to the rest of our trip. I am also grateful that I have Lena by my side to share these experiences with. She always knows how to find the best photo spots and is always up for trying new things. I couldn't imagine exploring this world without her.
As I sit here now, writing this blog post from our cozy room at Hotel Dar Mounir, I can't help but smile. Today was a perfect blend of exploration, discovery, and relaxation. Chefchaouen has captured our hearts, and I know we will cherish these memories for years to come.
