Discovering Douro's Delights
Today was a sensory explosion, a perfect blend of stunning vistas and delectable tastes that only the Douro Valley can offer. From panoramic viewpoints to charming wineries and exquisite dining experiences, it was a day filled with moments I'll cherish. I'm excited to share the highlights of our adventures with you all!
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Writer's Place in Régua. This cozy spot was perfect for fueling up before a day of exploring. The pastries were fresh, the coffee strong, and the atmosphere inviting. It was exactly what we needed to kickstart our adventures.
First on our itinerary was the Miradouro de Santa Marinha. The drive up was an adventure in itself, winding through narrow roads lined with vineyards. As we ascended, the anticipation grew, and the views kept getting better and better. Finally, we reached the top, and wow, what a view! The Douro Valley unfolded before us in all its glory. The terraced vineyards cascaded down to the river, creating a breathtaking panorama. I spent a good amount of time just soaking it all in, snapping photos, and trying to capture the sheer beauty of the landscape. Lena was equally mesmerized, and we took some great photos together, promising ourselves we'd frame one for our apartment back in Heidelberg.

After the viewpoint, we headed to Quinta da Foz, a winery I had been particularly excited about. The drive there was stunning, offering picturesque views around every bend. Quinta da Foz is nestled where the Pinhão and Douro rivers converge, in the Cima-Corgo sub-region. The vineyards are set on steep terraces along the Douro River, creating a stunning backdrop for wine tasting. We opted for a tour and tasting, eager to sample their renowned wines. We learned about the traditional winemaking techniques they employ, blending them with modern methods to produce exceptional wines. The wines were fantastic – from the crisp whites with their citrus notes to the robust reds, each sip was a taste of the Douro. I even picked up a bottle of their Reserva Tinto to bring back home.

The Douro Valley is a symphony of sights, sounds, and flavors, where every moment is a celebration of nature's beauty and human craftsmanship.
Lunch was at Restaurante Vila Douro Régua, a place recommended by several locals. It was easy to see why it was so popular! The restaurant had a charming ambiance, and the food was simply outstanding. We started with some local seafood dishes, followed by perfectly cooked meats. The house wine was a perfect complement, and the service was attentive and friendly. We shared stories and laughs over our meal, savoring not just the food but also the camaraderie. Lena was in her element, chatting away with our new friends about everything from German beer to Portuguese pastries.

In the late afternoon, after our delightful lunch, we decided to take it easy for a bit. We strolled through the charming streets of Régua, soaking in the local atmosphere. The town was bustling with activity, but it still had a relaxed, welcoming vibe. We explored some local shops, picking up a few souvenirs to remind us of our trip. I found a beautiful hand-painted tile with a Douro scene that I knew would look perfect in my study back in Heidelberg.
As evening approached, we freshened up at Gaia Residence before heading out for dinner. Tonight’s destination was São LUIZ by Chef Vitor de Oliveira. This restaurant promised a unique dining experience, and it certainly delivered! The setting was stunning, with views of the Douro River stretching as far as the eye could see. Chef Vitor's cuisine was a revelation – traditional Portuguese flavors elevated to new heights. Every dish was a work of art, showcasing the freshest local ingredients. The service was impeccable, with the staff going above and beyond to ensure we had a memorable evening. We enjoyed a bottle of their finest Port wine, savoring every sip as we watched the sunset over the Douro.

To cap off the night, we ventured to Libatio, a wine bar in Peso da Régua known for its exceptional selection of local wines. The bar had a cozy and sophisticated ambiance, perfect for unwinding after a day of exploration. We sampled a few different wines, chatting with the knowledgeable staff about the region's viticultural heritage. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day, surrounded by good wine and good company. Lena particularly enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere, saying it reminded her of some of her favorite spots in Lisbon.

Tomorrow marks the final day of our Douro Valley adventure. We plan to visit Quinta do Pôpa and the Douro Museum, hoping to soak in even more of the region's culture and history. And, of course, we'll make sure to grab some last-minute souvenirs at PORTOLOGIA - La Maison des Port before we head back to Porto. It's bittersweet to think our trip is coming to an end, but I'm already looking forward to sharing more stories and photos from our final day in this magical place.

I’m especially excited about our visit to the Douro Museum tomorrow. As someone who enjoys history, I look forward to learning more about the region’s rich heritage. I've also heard great things about Quinta do Pôpa, and I'm eager to explore another one of the Douro Valley's esteemed wineries.
