Exploring the Scenic Douro Valley with Friends
Day 9: A Final Toast to the Douro: Reflecting on a Week of Wine and Wonder
Join me on my last day in the Douro Valley as I explore Quinta do Pôpa, delve into the Douro's history, and savor unforgettable flavors.
Adieu, Douro Valley!
As the sun sets on my final day in the Douro Valley, I can't help but feel a pang of bittersweetness. This trip has been nothing short of extraordinary, filled with breathtaking landscapes, captivating history, and, of course, an abundance of exquisite wine. Today was all about soaking in the last drops of this magical place, and I'm eager to share every moment with you.
After a week of indulging in the Douro's delights, it's hard to believe our adventure is coming to an end. Lena and the others were equally as sentimental about the trip ending. We started our day with a hearty breakfast at VOLTA DOURO. While the online reviews mentioned mixed experiences, we found the service to be friendly and the food satisfying enough to start the day. I had a meat sandwich, while Lena opted for the pastries. It was a simple, no-fuss way to fuel up for our final day of exploration. It wasn't anything fancy, but it was exactly what we needed before heading out to Quinta do Pôpa.

Our first stop was Quinta do Pôpa, a family-owned winery known for its stunning views and exceptional wines. The drive there was, as always, a treat in itself, with the winding roads offering panoramic vistas of the terraced vineyards and the Douro River snaking through the valley. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the incredibly friendly staff who were very excited to walk us through their winemaking process, from grape to bottle.
We opted for a wine tasting paired with local delicacies such as cured meats and artisanal cheeses. Each sip was a revelation, with the wines reflecting the unique terroir of the region. Quinta do Pôpa truly captures the essence of the Douro, blending tradition with innovation to create wines that are both elegant and expressive. I ended up buying a bottle of their 'Popa' Tinto, a rich and intense red blend of Tinta Roriz and Touriga Nacional, to bring back home and share with friends in Heidelberg.

Next on our itinerary was the Douro Museum in Peso da Régua. Housed in the beautifully restored Casa da Companhia Velha, the museum offers a fascinating insight into the history, culture, and traditions of the Douro region. The exhibits are well-curated, showcasing everything from the early days of winemaking to the evolution of the landscape and the lives of the people who have shaped it. I particularly enjoyed learning about the rabelos, the traditional boats used to transport Port wine down the Douro River. It’s amazing how much history is packed into this one building. Lena was particularly fascinated by the exhibit on the different grape varietals and how they contribute to the unique characteristics of Douro wines.

For lunch, we decided to try Sabores do Douro in Pinhão. This family-owned restaurant is known for its authentic Portuguese dishes and stunning views of the Douro River. We shared a plate of coal-roasted cod and lamb chops, both cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. The service was friendly and attentive, and the overall atmosphere was warm and inviting. It was the perfect spot to relax and soak in the beauty of the Douro Valley one last time. While some reviews mention inconsistent food quality, our experience was overwhelmingly positive.

After lunch, we stopped by PORTOLOGIA - La Maison des Port, a shop dedicated to Port wine. Although my visit to the shop was brief, I was impressed by their wide selection of Ports from independent producers. It was a great place to pick up a few last-minute souvenirs for friends and family back home.

Our final dinner in the Douro Valley was at Terraçu's Restaurant. Located at Quinta Nova, this restaurant offers a fine dining experience with stunning views of the vineyards. The menu features creative dishes that showcase the region's culinary heritage, and the wine list is, of course, extensive. We opted for the tasting menu, which included a selection of local cheeses, cured meats, and traditional Portuguese dishes. Each course was paired with a different Douro wine, enhancing the flavors and creating a truly memorable dining experience. It was the perfect way to end our trip, savoring the best of the Douro Valley in a beautiful and elegant setting.

As I sit here, reflecting on the past nine days, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences I've had and the memories I've made. The Douro Valley has exceeded all my expectations, and I can't wait to return someday and explore even more of its hidden gems. From the rolling vineyards to the charming villages and the exceptional wines, this region has captured my heart in a way that few places have. I'm so glad I got to share this experience with Lena and our friends. We’ll be talking about this trip for years to come.
Tomorrow, we will be heading back to Porto to catch our flight back to Frankfurt. It’s always a little sad to leave a place you’ve fallen in love with, but I know I’ll carry the spirit of the Douro with me wherever I go. Until next time, Douro Valley! And to my readers, thank you for joining me on this incredible journey. Stay tuned for more adventures from around the world!
Cheers,
Matthew
